We Are Alive! February 24th, 2023 20 Hours Without Electricity

Yesterday evening, the lights went back on. We were without electricity for 20 hours and it was a great learning experience.

It turned out that the problem was right in our own neighborhood, in the yard of our neighbor. It was in the afternoon when we saw the DTE trucks showing up. They had to wap their trailer just to break the ice enough to get the tailgate to come down! Everything was covered in ice!

Even the grass was a matrix of ice!

The ice storm began with rain, then the temperature dropped quickly and all the water froze in place!

We had to be careful because the weight of the ice would cause tree branches to fall.

Life At Home

A while back, during the lockdown, we began to wonder what would happen if we were restricted to our homes and power went out. My wife said "At least the furnace would keep us warm!", to which I reminded her, "our gas furnace still requires electricity to run". It hit us like a ton of bricks.

We need something to keep us warm if the power went out! First choice is a wood stove, second choice is a gas stove. Then my wife saw a gas stove on clearance at our local hardware store. I installed it right away, we had it functioning for at least a year or two, but this was the first time we actually RELIED on it to keep the home warm.

Our home never dipped below 60 degrees (15 C) and our family remained comfortable.

We blocked off portions of the house we weren't using to conserve heat.

We got our camp stove out and enjoyed our normal meals together as a family!

Later in the day, we saw someone from DTE on top of a pole restringing a line. We knew power would be on soon.

It was a great learning experience and we feel just a little better prepared for at least a 20+ hour power outage.

Teach Your Children Liberty from Sin

We encourage parents to teach their children principles of Godliness, beginning with the Word and an understanding who God is and what His Son has done to form a relationship with us.

No one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13

Teach Your children Liberty from Tyranny

Second to this is the principle of self-determination and freedom, lest we loose the ability to teach our children the first principle in future generations. Our children read the Tuttle Twin books, specifically to learn libertarian principles, which most people learn later in life. These books are useful for our family, and yours, to teach children concepts that seem complicated, but are made simple in these books. I am an affiliate for Libertas Publishing, your purchase will help our family grow financially.

Use coupon code FORTY for 40% off your purchase! Check out the books here.

Compared to some situations, 20 hours isn't a big deal. We could have gone longer. !ALIVE

Great that you guys can keep warm even without electricity. That is a major inconvenience. In contrast, my issue is how to keep cool and comfy in the summer months. LOL! Stay safe and warm. Have a fantastic weekend!

Power outages in the summer can be trickier, since we could easily loose all of our food in our refrigerator and freezer.

Maybe as a backup in such situations invest in a dehydrator and freeze-dryer, and maybe some jars to store what you dry! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Good advice! Been investing in freeze-dried since 2012... and we have a dehydrator! We'll be good for at least 6 months or more. Might get tired of rice though, thankfully we invested in soy sauce! !LOLZ

Great to see that you where prepared for the power outage Benjamin, I grew up on a farm so it happened a few times a year, we had a tractor driven generator though, and big enough to fully replace grid power, it took a bit of diesel though, enjoy the power being back and stay !ALIVE

A tractor would be useful in a situation like this, could generate a lot of power. WE discovered that our neighbor has a whole-house generator, since his landscape lights were on his house!

Everyone else upgrades to match or exceed it? I wish I were in a position to purchase a whole-house generator... if HIVE goes to $50 i'm good to go!

20 hours without electricity!! Difficult to imagine how our life would be here!

Anyway, it is good to hear that the electricity is back. And, you had prepared beforehand to keep your family warm in such a situation.

Stay safe!

That is an unfortunate situation but thank God you were able to handle it. But come to think of it, 20 hours without electricity in some other places is just like less than 1 hour without electricity, and not even cause by any natural occurence like ice.

At least we knew what the problem was and that it was being repaired, I can only imagine if there was no idea what caused it, no answers and no updates on progress. That would make the experience a lot more unnerving.

That's why I hate the winter. I moved to the southern part of the states just to avoid that type of weather. We do get a tough of winter, mostly lower temps and a little rain but rarely and snow of major ice like you got. Winter last for about 6 weeks or so instead of months, I !LUV it!!

Very nice looking family!

24 hours without light. And there is hope is gonna be fixed. In Nigeria we can stay 6 months without light. You run generator wasting a lot of money. Am happy how you and your family handle each situation

In Nigeria we can stay 6 months without light.

I understand there are many places where electricity is not reliable and will experience outages for long periods of time. Makes our 20 hour experience pretty easy. It's sort of unthinkable, but we may experience something like that.

Being versatile and adaptable to events is very important indeed, as I know you know! Having redundancy in our systems allows us to keep going when components of our system fail. I commend you on passing through this challenge so easefully! Great job Benjamin! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
