El inmortal Andrés Domínguez | The immortal Andrés Domínguez

—¿A cualquier costo, Andrés…?

TITULO INGLES.jpg

Standing in front of the shining mirror, Andrés Domínguez looks at himself carefully. He gently runs his fingers smoothing his eyebrows and descending without distraction to his neat moustaches. With a loud voice he calls Begoña, his housekeeper, to conclude a repeated ritual with which he reinforces his security...

The young writer does not remember when he began to pay attention to the knot of the tie, to doubt if the Windsor had been totally centered, totally symmetrical between the two wings of the collar of the shirt.

Before his fame he was content to go everywhere in his shirt sleeves and when he wanted to show off he would throw on a black leather jacket, the kind with wide lapels.

But as his fame as a precocious literary star grew, he became accustomed to wearing expensive suits, which always required the use of a tie. The precision with the centrality of the knot had become for him an obsession?

He was going to call Begoña again, but the solicitous housekeeper was already behind the dressing room. Two knocks on the door suspended the words in his throat. -Here I am Mr. Andrés, said the housekeeper with a maternal tone... Begoña, can you check the knot of my tie, make sure it is completely centered, neither too loose nor too tight... Begoña with her trained hands took the Windsor between thumb and forefinger. She gave a light touch on Andrés' chin to have a better view and tightened the knot a little, subtly moving it from left to right...

-That's good, Mr. Andres, don't you feel it too tight... Yes Begoña, it's fine. Perfect... You have a great ability to leave the Windsor just where it should be....

Andres got into the car and instructed the driver to take him to the National Theater, where he would receive the international literature award, a distinction that was rarely given to young writers like him.

During the whole trip Andres could not stop thinking about the emptiness that afflicted him. His life had been relatively easy. As a young boy he had decided that he would devote himself to writing. Unlike many others, he had been fully supported in that choice. His parents had sent him to the best schools, had paid him the best tutors to guarantee him an impeccable education. And they had sent him to travel the world to nourish his spirit with multiple experiences. All this undoubtedly contributed to consolidate his literary vocation.

He had fame, money, friends everywhere.... And yet, he felt he needed something more. He wasn't sure what it could be but he longed to find something that would turn his existence upside down.

imagen 2-550.jpg

Andrés received the award with enthusiasm. A long ovation from the audience momentarily fed his spirit. But even with that strong emotional outpouring, his uneasiness did not disappear.

As he was leaving the theater, on his way back to the house, Andres glimpsed a flash that caught his attention, something was glowing on a side street, near the main viaduct of the city...

Without hesitation, the young writer ordered the driver to stop and after crossing some glowing puddles, he kicked the cans to a peeling wall where a clear graffiti gleamed; it was a version of the moralizing messages contained in Aesop's fables: "Be careful with what you wish for because it may come true...".

-A message written more than five hundred years ago and to which few heed, said a voice behind Andrew...

The young man turned around and found an older man elegantly dressed, he thought it must be one of the attendees to the award ceremony...

-Yes, an old saying..., but in my opinion something wrong, I notice a pessimistic, conformist air in that text. Surely Aesop was one of those timorous, conservative characters who was afraid of adventure. Desires are what feed the soul of innovators. Without them the world would come to a standstill. Andres commented with a clear conviction, as if to leave his interlocutor in no doubt about his way of understanding the world.

-Perhaps you are right, Andrés, but Aesop also had in mind that ambition was the downfall of humans...

-And how do you know my name, my friend?

-And who has not heard of the famous writer Andrés Domínguez, who many say has the makings of a Nobel Prize winner? The one who has been read by the gods of the literary Olympus: Vargas Llosa, Murakami, Isabel Allende... They all comment in their interviews that they have read you and that you are a literary revelation, that few have managed to string words together the way you do. But apparently all that fame and recognition doesn't help much, does it, Andrés...?

imagen3-550.jpg

-I recognize that many would like to be in my place, to have reached where I am. However, I am convinced that there must be something more to life. Something beyond pleasures and recognition. I don't know what it might be, but I would like to know something that would transform my life forever?
-Isn't that ambition, Andrés... The perdition of men...?

-Maybe..., maybe I am ungrateful with life. But tell me, my friend... What is life if not the eternal impulse to want to go beyond...?

-And if I told you that I had the power to give you that something... Would you take it, Andrés...?

-Without a doubt, my friend. I would eagerly take that something that could radically transform my life...

-At any cost, Andrés...?

-There is no greater cost than living a life of tedium and boredom, my friend....

From a pocket of his coat, the mysterious interlocutor extracted a small leather briefcase containing three objects: a notebook, a bottle of red ink, and a fountain pen...

-With this notebook and this ink you will be able to write stories that will allow you to live the life of your characters in a real way. But this effect will only last between sunset and sunrise. Write quickly, one or two hours before sunset, so that you can make the most of this new reality. But you must keep in mind that under no circumstances should you run out of ink. That will be a great temptation, and I warn you that very few have managed to overcome it... This is the offer I have for you, Andrés... Do you accept it...?

-Of course I do. That's all, my dear...!

Andres took the light briefcase, shook the hand of that enigmatic subject and returned to the vehicle.

That same night Andres, still in doubt as to whether what he had been promised could be true, wrote his first story with the tools left by the mysterious friend. Everything turned out just as he had been told...

As in a dream, but he knew it was real, he could live inside the stories. To know better the fantasy worlds he created, to establish intimacy with the characters. Never before had the secrets of the human soul been revealed in such a way to any person...

Every night Andrew wrote a new story. The experience of being immersed in those real stories broke all the limits of his creativity. His writing regained an unusual verve, became more intense, more incisive, more transparent. Each line was capable of transporting his readers, of making them feel the deepest, most vivid emotions. Her fame grew like foam. His books sold by the millions... His wealth knew no limits...

One night Andres felt he was about to finish what would be his greatest work, the one that would open the doors to immortality. When he dipped the fountain pen into the inkwell, he realized that there were only a few drops of ink left. He remembered the words of that night: For no reason should you use up the ink...! But in a frenzy he did not have the courage to decide to leave his work unfinished. She used the last drop of ink to finish the final word...

The next day Begoña was surprised to receive no answer when she knocked several times on the door of Andrés' room to bring breakfast. Using a master key she opened the door, but to her surprise the bedroom was empty. The chauffeur notified him that he had not taken the young man anywhere during the night...

News of the mysterious disappearance of the famous writer spread around the world. The authorities were unable to unravel the mystery. Millions of readers from all continents were plunged into great sadness. Astonishment and grief gripped many people...

The country's authorities decided to declare Andres Dominguez a national hero. His house became a museum. Everything was left as it had been before the disappearance. Millions of people paraded annually through that sanctuary...

From the bottom of the inkwell, Andres could observe with nostalgia the cost of immortality.

Thank you for your time.
