Novecento. Alessandro Baricco | [ESP/ENG]

A Baricco siempre vuelvo, es un autor que tiene una prosa prodigiosa capaz de transportarnos a mundos donde se toman de la mano realidad y fantasía. Además, el italiano tiene una agudeza muy particular para penetrar en los intersticios del alma humana.

A Novecento lo leí hace muchos años. Es una obra difícil de clasificar, fue compuesta como un monólogo teatral, pero el mismo Baricco ha dicho que puede leerse como una novela corta o un relato largo. Para abreviar diré que es un gran relato.

La historia está ubicada en la primera mitad del siglo XX, en principio pudiera ser un poco extraña y hasta cierto punto inverosímil. Un niño nacido en un barco trasatlántico, el Virginia, similar al famoso Titanic, es abandonado por sus padres antes de entrar a los Estados Unidos, lo que era común entre los inmigrantes que venían de Europa a América.

Muchas mujeres daban a luz en el trayecto y se las ingeniaban para dejar escondidos en los barcos aquellos hijos que agravarían los problemas de una familia que de por sí se aventuraba a un futuro incierto. Quizá ellas albergaban la esperanza de que las autoridades pudieran ponerlos en manos de alguna familia rica que les diera una vida mejor que la conocida por sus padres.

Pero aquel pequeño tuvo otro destino, un marinero negro se encargó de él y lo bautizó con un largo nombre que terminaba con la palabra Novecento, para celebrar que había nacido el primer día del siglo XX.

El niño fue criado en el barco y a los ocho años quedó huérfano, por lo que el Capitán decide entregarlo a las autoridades, pero el muchacho decidió esconderse en aquel barco que conocía mejor que nadie. No lo encontraron hasta que una noche sorprendió a todo el mundo tocando en el piano una melodía capaz de despertar los sentimientos más profundos de la gente. Desde aquel día Novecento se convirtió en leyenda.

La historia del famoso pianista nos la cuenta un joven trompetista casi adolescente que ingresó a la banda del Virginia, allí se hizo gran amigo del pianista. Intrigado por aquel hombre que nunca había tocado tierra se empeñó en convencerlo para que conociera otra vida, el mundo de afuera, y casi logra su cometido. Pero en el último momento, cuando está al pie de la escalerilla que lo separa del mar, Novecento cambia de parecer y decide terminar su vida en el único sitio donde se siente seguro, el Virginia.

La lectura da para muchas reflexiones. Uno de los temas que nos deja es la necesidad que todos tenemos de encontrar la seguridad y la dificultad que representa aventurarnos más allá de lo conocido, lo que ahora llamamos nuestra zona de confort.

Para nuestro protagonista resulta impensable vivir en un mundo más amplio que el delimitado por aquel gran transatlántico. Y aunque está acostumbrado a vivir en el mar, que es mucho más inmenso que la tierra, la certeza de terminar la vista en el horizonte le da la seguridad de saber que allí está el fin. No se imagina Novecento dónde puede estar el fin en una ciudad como Nueva York, en la que los rascacielos desordenan la mirada de tal forma que hace imposible ubicar con precisión la finitud de aquel espacio que se desborda sin límites. ..

Otro gran tema de este pequeño relato es la amistad. El barco se nos presenta como un gran espacio de colaboración y convivencia, donde aquellos hombres son capaces de ponerse de acuerdo pare criar un niño recién nacido.

En ese ambiente que para los de afuera pudiera resultar hasta claustrofóbico, se teje una profunda amistad entre un trompetista recién llegado y un pianista muy peculiar, en la que ambos van desnudando sus sentimientos, sus valoraciones y creencias sobre el mundo, y nos muestran las diferentes posibilidades, que como humanos tenemos, de ver la vida…

Una de las cosas que me gustan de Baricco es que no nos da lecciones morales. En el escrito nos presenta situaciones, nos pone en la piel de los personajes sin decirnos esto es bueno o esto es malo. Deja que cada uno de nosotros como lector saque sus propias conclusiones.

De este modo me parece que la resonancia de la lectura es mucho más potente, porque explícitamente no nos induce hacia ninguna posición.

Novecento es una obra que se las recomiendo ampliamente, tiene la gran virtud de ser muy breve. Es un buen ejemplo de cómo despertar sentimientos y emociones en muy pocas páginas.

I read Novecento many years ago. It is a difficult work to classify, it was composed as a theatrical monologue, but Baricco himself has said that it can be read as a short novel or a long story. To make a long story short I will say that it is a long story.

The story is set in the first half of the twentieth century, at first it might be a bit strange and to some extent implausible. A child born on an ocean liner, the Virginia, similar to the famous Titanic, is abandoned by his parents before entering the United States, which was common among immigrants coming from Europe to America.

Many women gave birth on the voyage and managed to leave hidden on the ships those children that would aggravate the problems of a family that was already venturing into an uncertain future. Perhaps they harbored the hope that the authorities could place them in the hands of a rich family that would give them a better life than the one known by their parents.

But that little boy had another destiny, a black sailor took care of him and baptized him with a long name ending with the word Novecento, to celebrate the fact that he had been born on the first day of the 20th century.

The boy was raised on the ship and at the age of eight he was orphaned, so the Captain decided to hand him over to the authorities, but the boy decided to hide on that ship that he knew better than anyone else. He was not found until one night he surprised everyone by playing on the piano a melody capable of awakening people's deepest feelings. From that day Novecento became a legend.

The story of the famous pianist is told by a young trumpet player, almost a teenager, who joined the Virginia band, where he became a great friend of the pianist. Intrigued by this man who had never touched land, he tries to convince him of the need to know another life and almost convinces him to leave the ship. But at the last moment, when he is at the foot of the ladder that separates him from the sea, Novecento changes his mind and decides to end his life in the only place where he feels safe, the Virginia.

The reading provides much food for thought. One of the themes it leaves us with is the need we all have to find security and the difficulty of venturing beyond the known, what we now call our comfort zone.

For our protagonist it is unthinkable to live in a wider world than the one delimited by that great ocean liner. And although he is used to living in the sea, which is much more immense than the land, the certainty of ending his sight on the horizon gives him the security of knowing that the end is there. Novecento cannot imagine where the end could be in a city like New York, where the skyscrapers clutter the gaze in such a way as to make it impossible to locate with precision the finitude of that space that overflows without limits....

Another great theme of this short story is friendship. The boat is presented to us as a great space of collaboration and coexistence, where those men are capable of agreeing to raise a newborn child.

In this environment, which for outsiders could be even claustrophobic, a deep friendship is woven between a newly arrived trumpet player and a very peculiar pianist, in which both bare their feelings, their values and beliefs, and show us the different possibilities that we as humans have, to see life...

One of the things I like about Baricco is that he does not give us moral lessons. In his writing he presents us with situations, he puts us in the characters' shoes without telling us this is good or this is bad. He lets each of us as a reader draw our own conclusions.

In this way it seems to me that the resonance of the reading is much more powerful, because it does not explicitly induce us to any position.

Novecento is a work that I highly recommend, it has the great virtue of being very brief. It is a good example of how to awaken feelings and emotions in very few pages.
