Al nacer comienza un proceso que inevitablemente conducirá al envejecimiento y luego a la muerte del cuerpo. Algo tan normal, tan natural, nuestra cultura lo ha elevado a la categoría de tragedia. Muchas veces despilfarramos un valioso tiempo tratando de hacerle trampas al deterioro del cuerpo, en vez de enfocarnos en sacarle el mayor provecho a cada uno de los días con los que contamos para vivir.

En esta última película Old (2021), del excelente cineasta, M. Night Shyamalan, de ascendencia hindú, —de quien he visto algunas películas como The Sixth Sense (1999), y la trilogía compuesta por Unbreakable (2000), Split (2016) y Glass (2019)— se nos presenta una metáfora para reflexionar sobre nuestras opciones cuando el tiempo se nos viene encima.

Guy (Gael García Bernal), un experto en estadísticas en el área de los seguros, su esposa Prisca (Vicky Krieps ) trabajadora en un museo arqueológico, y sus dos hijos pequeños, Trent y Maddox, deciden pasar unos días de vacaciones en un resort de una isla del Caribe.

Al llegar, el dueño del establecimiento les indica que le han caído bien, y para celebrarlo les ofrece un exclusivo paseo a una playa especial situada en una zona protegida.

La familia, muy contenta, se monta en una camioneta conducida por el mismo Shyamalan, la que los llevará al paradisíaco sitio. Ellos creían que irían solos y para su sorpresa también van de acompañantes, Charles (Rufus Sewell), un médico cirujano, su madre Agnes (Kathleen Chalfant), su esposa Cristal (Abbey Lee) y su pequeña hija Kara.

A las dos familias le resulta un tanto extraño que tengan que cargar ellos mismos el pesado equipaje para llegar a la playa, la excusa del chofer es que no los puede acompañar porque está apurado. Al llegar se encuentran con una playa espectacular y se dan cuenta que está otro sujeto, un conocido rapero de nombre Mid-Sized Sedan, (Aaron Pierre).

A los pocos minutos llega otra pareja integrada por Jarin Carmichael (Ken Leung) y su esposa Patricia (Nikki Amuka-Aves). El grupo está completo. Todos ellos tienen un punto en común, alguno de los integrantes de las tres familias sufre una enfermedad grave.

Mientras disfrutan de ese paraíso natural ocurre un suceso imprevisto que pone en guardia a todo el grupo y amenaza con aguarles el día de playa. Ese primer suceso dará paso a otros, entre ellos el rápido crecimiento de los niños pequeños.

Los extraños y misteriosos sucesos no paran y pronto todos caen en cuenta que están en un sitio donde el paso del tiempo se acelera. Comienzan a tejer hipótesis y llegan a la conclusión de que es necesario escapar. Sin embargo, fracasan todos los intentos, nada funciona, no pueden salir.

Atrapados como están es inevitable que estallen los conflictos personales, algunos no resisten los cambios producidos por el sitio y pierden la cordura, lo que hace que todos los problemas se agraven.

En los diez minutos finales el Director Shyamalan, deja caer una solución que resuelve todas las incognitas…

Old es una buena película de suspenso, con toques de misterio y ciencia ficción. Desde las primeras escenas la hábil cámara de Shyamalan, nos hace intuir que allí hay algo raro. Que debemos prepararnos para lo que viene.

En los primeros minutos para mí fue inevitable hacer asociaciones con la icónica serie Lost. Locaciones parecidas, movimientos de cámara y conflictos personales, me recordaban aquella larga serie de comienzos de siglo.

El Director Shyamalan, también autor del guión, tiene una gran habilidad para mantenernos pendientes de lo que ocurre. En esta película rodada casi totalmente en exteriores, se vale de un extraordinario uso de la cámara, aprovecha muy bien los planos secuencia y los acercamientos y alejamientos para crear atmósferas de misterio, sostenidas por una excelente banda sonora.

Alguna crítica he leído donde comentan que la trama es algo desordenada. Es verdad que a momentos se presentan muchas situaciones que parecieran no encajar y se sobreponen unas a otras, dejando aparentes cabos sueltos. Es una de las tantas maneras de presentar la narración, pero a mí me pareció que todo estaba contado con la ilación y la coherencia necesaria para entender lo que ocurre.

Cada vez que veo una película me pregunto muchas veces qué trata de decirme. A fin de cuentas cada realizador deja su propuesta porque quiere explorar alguna idea. En este caso creo que son varias.

Una es los conflictos personales. Todos esos grupos familiares arrastran algún problema entre los miembros de la pareja. Acuden al paseo como una forma de encontrar un poco de oxígeno y de escapar a una problemática que no quieren, o no pueden enfrentar. Así actúa mucha gente; creen que corriendo la arruga y guardando el sucio debajo de la alfombra los problemas desaparecen, pero no, no es así. Aunque usted no los quiera enfrentar, siguen allí. Y así esté en el sitio más bello del mundo van a aflorar en algún momento.

El otro gran tema que aprecio en el film, es lo irremediable, duro y difícil que puede ser la vejez y el valor que tiene el tiempo vital.

El recurso utilizado para tomar conciencia de ello es situarnos en un sitio donde todos los años nos caen de sopetón, sin previo aviso. En la paradisíaca playa se produce una aceleración del tiempo, en el que se viven cincuenta años en un día. Para una persona de mi edad significa morir a los pocos minutos, tal como le pasó a Agnes, la madre del doctor Charles. Pero igualmente grave es para un niño. Imagínense lo que eso significa, que usted tenga hoy seis años y mañana cincuenta y seis. Envejeció sin recuerdos. ¿Cómo se vive una vida sin experiencia previa? Menudo lío, ¿no?

No menos importante es el asunto de los límites de la ciencia. Hay problemas éticos en las investigaciones científicas que siguen en discusión. ¿Es válido experimentar en sujetos reales, aunque eso genere consecuencias? Para muchos eso está ocurriendo en estos momentos con todo lo relacionado con la vacuna del Covid-19, en adultos y niños. De alguna forma los que nos vacunamos estamos corriendo con el riesgo de una investigación en marcha. Es verdad que tal como están las cosas no tenemos muchas alternativas. El Covid nos atrapó como a la gente de esa playa.

La película cuenta con buenas actuaciones. Destacando la de Rufus Sewell (Charles), a quien recuerdo como oficial Nazi en la miniserie el Hombre en el Castillo. En esta oportunidad se pone en la piel de un médico, quien al inicio se erige como líder natural en una situación donde la gente va cayendo con problemas de salud. Es interesante su transformación de hombre cuerdo y racional a un demente peligroso.

También me gustó mucho el desempeño de la actriz Vicky Krieps (Prisca). A ratos, sobre todo en la primera parte, me recordó mucho a Meryl Streep. En sus dos momentos, de mujer joven, y de señora mayor, hace sentir mucho su presencia.

Gael García Bernal, no está mal, sin embargo, sentí su papel un poco plano, en otras películas lo he visto mucho mejor.

Es probable que esta no sea la mejor película de Shyamalan, de las recientes me gustó más Split, pero estamos claros que en cuestión de gustos no hay nada definitivo.

Si les gustan las películas de suspenso y que den temas para pensar quizá valga la pena que le den una oportunidad a Old.

Old is a good thriller, with touches of mystery and science fiction. From the first scenes, Shyamalan's skillful camera, makes us intuit that there is something strange there. That we must prepare ourselves for what is coming.

In the first few minutes for me it was inevitable to make associations with the iconic series Lost. Similar locations, camera movements and personal conflicts reminded me of that long-running series from the turn of the century.

Director Shyamalan, who also wrote the screenplay, has a great ability to keep us on our toes. In this film, shot almost entirely on location, he uses an extraordinary use of the camera, making good use of sequence shots and zooming in and out to create atmospheres of mystery, supported by an excellent soundtrack.

I have read some reviews where they comment that the plot is a bit messy. It is true that at times there are many situations that do not seem to fit together and are superimposed on each other, leaving apparent loose ends. It is one of the many ways of presenting the narrative, but it seemed to me that everything was told with the necessary coherence and coherence to understand what is happening.

Every time I see a film I often wonder what it is trying to tell me. At the end of the day, every filmmaker leaves his proposal because he wants to explore some idea. In this case I think there are several.

One is personal conflicts. All those family groups drag some problem between the members of the couple. They go for a walk as a way to find some oxygen and to escape from a problem they don't want to, or can't face. This is how many people act; they think that by dragging the wrinkle and keeping the dirt under the carpet the problems will go away, but no, they don't. Even if you don't want to face them, they are still there. Even if you don't want to face them, they are still there. And even if you're in the most beautiful place in the world they're going to surface at some point.

The other great theme that I appreciate in the film is how irremediable, hard and difficult old age can be and the value of vital time.

For a person of my age it means dying within minutes, just as it happened to Agnes, Dr. Charles' mother. But it is equally serious for a child. Imagine what it means for you to be six years old today and fifty-six tomorrow. You grew old without memories. How do you live a life without previous experience? What a mess, isn't it?

No less important is the issue of the limits of science. There are ethical problems in scientific research that are still under discussion. Is it valid to experiment on real subjects, even if that generates consequences? For many that is happening right now with everything related to the Covid-19 vaccine, in adults and children. In a way, those of us who get vaccinated are running the risk of ongoing research. It is true that as things stand we don't have many alternatives. The Covid caught us like the people on the beach.

The film has good performances. Rufus Sewell (Charles), who I remember as a Nazi officer in the miniseries Man in the Castle, stands out. In this opportunity he plays a doctor, who at the beginning stands as a natural leader in a situation where people are falling down with health problems. His transformation from sane and rational man to a dangerous madman is interesting.

I also really liked the performance of actress Vicky Krieps (Prisca). At times, especially in the first part, she reminded me a lot of Meryl Streep. In her two moments, as a young woman and as an old lady, she makes her presence felt.
Gael García Bernal, not bad, however, I felt his role a bit flat, in other films I have seen him much better.

It is likely that this is not Shyamalan's best film, of the recent ones I liked Split more, but we are clear that in a matter of tastes there is nothing definitive.

If you like suspenseful and thought-provoking films, it might be worth giving Old a chance.
