Llego a Pedro Mairal leyendo a una de las grandes del nuevo periodismo latinoamericano, la escritora argentina Leila Guerriero. En algún lugar ella mencionaba a Mairal como otro escritor imprescindible, que destaca por mucho en las cortas distancias, crónicas de prensa, relatos y ensayos.
Atendiendo la sugerencia de la señora Guerriero me puse en internet a buscar material sobre el argentino y di con algunos textos suyos, entre ellos una recopilación de notas de prensa seleccionadas por ella misma.
Leer a Mairal fue amor a primera vista, es un escritor con una gran habilidad para tejer historias a partir de detalles cotidianos, es impresionante su capacidad de observación, lo que le permite contar un buen relato sobre casi cualquier cosa.
En una de sus crónicas el contaba cómo había sido el proceso para elaborar su primera novela. Todo comenzó en unas vacaciones de verano cuando un conocido le prestó una pequeña finca en el medio de la nada, allí se fue Mairal con su novia y su laptop, como anécdota cuenta el escritor que le regaló a su novia una novela de más de mil páginas, así garantizaba que no lo molestara mientras estaba escribiendo.
Usando como escritorio una silla cualquiera y sentado al borde de la cama, Mairal escribió todos los días durante aquel verano, al final ya tenía listo un texto que compartió con sus amigos de los talleres literarios donde participaba. Ese texto durmió el sueño de los justos durante un buen tiempo. Hasta que llegó el día de darlo a conocer.
La ocasión se la brindó la convocatoria para el premio Clarín de Novela del año 1998, uno de los más prestigiosos de Argentina. En esa oportunidad el jurado compuesto por grandes escritores de la talla de Adolfo Bioy Casares, Augusto Roa Bastos y Guillermo Cabrera Infante, seleccionaron como ganador el manuscrito enviado por Pedro Mairal, se trataba de “Una Noche con Sabrina Love” A partir de ese momento las puertas de la fama se abrieron para el argentino y comenzó a brillar en el firmamento de las letras argentinas, e hispanoamericanas.
La historia de esta corta novela es relativamente sencilla pero muy ocurrente. Comienza cuando Daniel Montero, un muchacho común y corriente de diecisiete años, huérfano de padre y madre, que vive con su abuela anciana en el imaginario pueblo de Curuguazú, en el interior de Argentina, gana el premio de un concurso televisivo. Pero este no es un premio cualquiera, se trata nada más y nada menos que pasar una noche entera con “Sabrina Love”, la más cotizada actriz del cine porno.
Desde el principio Daniel duda si ir a recibir su gran premio, entre otras cosas porque la zona donde vive está completamente inundada y se han cortado las comunicaciones con Buenos Aires, el sitio donde lo va a recibir la Reina del porno. Pero al final un amigo lo convence de que ha recibido una oportunidad única en la vida y que no debe desaprovecharla.
Es así como Daniel emprende un largo viaje donde va a vivir las situaciones más insospechadas, desde ser cobijado por una familia de criadores de ganado, ser robado por unos soldados que están de permiso, hasta conseguir la cola en un camión cuyo conductor resultó ser muy amigo del conductor responsable del accidente donde murieron los padres de Daniel, en la misma carretera donde él se traslada haciendo auto stop hacia Buenos Aires.
En Buenos Aires continúan las aventuras del muchacho, se siente perdido en aquella selva de concreto. Pero luego de dar muchos tumbos y de vivir cualquier tipo de situaciones, algunas bien insólitas, al final logra concretar su codiciado encuentro con “Sabrina Love”, quien resultó ser una mujer cariñosa, amable, y que sufre profundamente los maltratos que le ocasionan uno de los dueños de la empresa pornográfica donde ella presta sus servicios actorales.
El texto se lee con facilidad, está escrito con un tono muy ameno y con unas buenas dosis de humor. Mairal es un Maestro de ese humor ácido que a ratos se pasea entre la risa y la tragedia.
Pero el texto aunque escrito en tono ligero para nada es superficial. Mairal también tiene la habilidad de ir revelando en la lectura los serios problemas de una sociedad como la argentina. Un asunto que me llamó mucho la atención fue el tema de la discriminación, entre las personas de las diferentes regiones y entre los nacionales y los extranjeros. La discriminación y la intolerancia son unos de los grandes problemas de nuestro tiempo.
Muchos son los temas trabajados en esta amena y corta novela. Y pudieran agruparse en dos niveles, por un lado, estarían los problemas existenciales de una generación como la de Daniel. También, los que se viven en cualquier sociedad de los llamados países del tercer mundo, aunque Argentina creyó durante mucho tiempo que no pertenecía a ese grupo.
El libro se consigue fácilmente en Internet, si tienen la oportunidad denle un chance a esta conmovedora historia. Yo la leí en tres tardes. Se las recomiendo.

The text is easy to read, written in a very pleasant tone and with a good dose of humor. Mairal is a master of that acid humor that sometimes wanders between laughter and tragedy.
But the text, although written in a light tone, is not superficial at all. Mairal also has the ability to reveal in the reading the serious problems of a society like the Argentinean one. One issue that really caught my attention was the issue of discrimination, between people from different regions and between nationals and foreigners. Discrimination and intolerance are some of the great problems of our time.
Many are the themes explored in this entertaining and short novel. And they could be grouped in two levels, on the one hand, there are the existential problems of a generation like Daniel's. On the other hand, there are the problems that are experienced in any other generation. On the other hand, there are the problems that are experienced in any society of the so-called third world countries, although Argentina believed for a long time that it did not belong to that group.
The book is easily available on the Internet, if you have the opportunity, give this moving story a chance. I read it in three afternoons. I highly recommend it.
