Hello everyone
How are you today ? I hope and pray that we are all always in good health and spirit to face all the challenges in this life. This time, I participated again in the Architecture+Design Community to share stories about my experiences and impressions of a place that has interesting designs and architecture for us to discuss. Let's continue to read my story this time.

Do you like to eat bread or cookies? or if you don't really like to eat bread, but surely you've come to the bakery at least to buy it as a gift to colleagues or family. Each bakery has a unique vibe, both in terms of the building, concept or design choices displayed. This time, I would like to invite you to take a look and discuss one of the growing and well-known bakery shops in Medan City, Jawara Bakery – Roti and Kue.

Jawara Bakery

Jawara Bakery is one of our family's favorite bakeries. This bakery is still relatively new, because it just started its business in mid 2016. This bakery chose a very bold and strong name. For information "Jawara" is an Indonesian word which means never lose or always win a battle. So, does the name match the reality?

My father who first discovered this bakery, my father really liked bread as a snack. However, my father is very picky with the taste of bread. If that one bread has become the choice, I make sure the bread must be delicious and of good quality. It can be said, my father and I witnessed how a small bakery outlet which was originally only 6x10 meters in size became a magnificent, large and special outlet with a wide parking area.

I know, one day the bakery business from Jawara Bakery will definitely be big and successful. The owner of this bakery is a Chinese-Indonesian woman from Medan City who studies pastry and bakery in France. In addition, bread, cookies and various other dishes are always served fresh from the oven, delicious and at affordable prices for the middle class community. Having said that, when this store does a complete renovation and rebranding, I'm really looking forward to it.

Jawara Bakery is located at Gatot Subroto Street no. 254 C, Medan Helvetia District – Medan City. The location is very strategic because it is on one of the busiest protocol roads in my city. The building and land area are much larger, even five times the first shop they sell which is not far from this place. The first time I saw it, I felt the impression of luxury and elegance from just looking at this bakery building. I like the wide car park of the bakery, and it can accommodate up to 8 cars. One good lesson from the old shop that didn't have adequate car parking space. Apparently, business owners are also aware, because the majority of buyers from this place are car users.

Elegant White and Blue
Now we will focus on the building in front of the Jawara Bakery. My focus is distracted by the logo of this bakery, which is in the center of the building. We will see the word “JAWARA ROTI & KUE” which is made to fit perfectly in size. Not too prominent, but still gives a strong branding impression for the store name. The font color is also in harmony with one of the building colors.

Physically, the new building of Jawara Bakery is in the shape of a square box, at first glance I see it as the bakeries in Europe that I have seen in dramas or movies. Especially when you see the ornaments and decorations at the top of this door, it's very cool and very elegant. I think the design of this building seems to have been influenced by a pastry shop owner who had studied in France, because we can see that he brought a lot of European design concepts.

One of my favorite parts of this building is the window construction they use. Jawara Bakery uses the concept of a transom window. The transom window has the shape of a large box with a semicircle at the top. I often see windows like this in the buildings of the Dutch colonial era (which has European influence) in my city.

1666075215923.jpg
The concept of semicircular windows is also popular and is widely used for minimalist buildings in recent years. The concept of a semi-circular window will give the impression of a classic feel to the building and I feel that. In addition, the size of the transom window is usually large enough so that it can be a source of lighting during the day. One of the important functions of this large window with transparent glass is also as a display case for products. From a clean window, we can see a jar of cookies that are neatly arranged and if we look from the outside it might influence us to buy the product.

Elegant and Luxurious
When I walked into this bakery, I felt a strong impression from every corner of this building. Jawara Bakery's interior uses a combination of minimalist and industrial concepts, which is very cool. Jawara Bakery still uses the dark blue color concept but is combined with brown and gold accents. I will discuss about the lighting selection of this place, because the bakery certainly needs the right lighting because the bakery always displays its products.

I came to this place in the morning with bright sunshine. When I walk into this place, it looks dimmer. I think the selection of lights with a slightly yellow color gives the right ambience for the bakery products sold in this place. We certainly know, that the right lighting in a building can affect consumer attitudes towards a product. When I was inside this bakery, I felt like buying all the bakery products sold here.

This good lighting is also combined with the furniture used to display bakery products from this bakery. Some bakery products are displayed on a table that is arranged neatly and in an orderly manner with other tables. The table legs also still use a dark blue color with a white table mat. The color combination of this table is still in accordance with the initial color concept from the first time we saw this building.

In the center of this building, we are conceptualized as a coffee bar, cashier and also a cake display case or tart on display. I like the way Jawara Bakery makes this area, it looks simple, beautiful and very fitting. In addition, don't forget to give a strong impression as a bakery that sells bread products that are fresh from the oven. Jawa Bakery also makes an open kitchen room where we can see the process of baking bread dough and processing it. I think the fragrant aroma of the bread being baked becomes an additional decoration of this room.

I saw on the left side of this room, there was an empty area. I asked the waiters, according to him in the empty area that will be made a seat, like a coffee shop. So, visitors who come to this place can enjoy bread and drink coffee. I was waiting for that moment, it seemed fun to enjoy a cup of warm coffee with fresh bread, a moment that is rarely found in my city.

Seeing the development of Jawara Bakery, I remembered that every business has its own target market. Get to know our target market, and make sure you always innovate and don't get caught in your comfort zone. The bakery is not only about the quality of the taste of the bread, but the customer experience when visiting the place makes bakery business owners have to keep trying. I witnessed, from a small bakery on the side of the road to a big bakery that is very cool and classy. See you in my story next week.

yup, I think this bakery is like a coffee shop, very cool and classy. Anyone who visits will definitely be impressed to see it.

Food businesses such as bakeries must be able to maintain cleanliness, because this is about food and good sanitation. I think Jawara Bakery has done very well.

Hi there, @isdarmady! 😃 I love bread too and the sight of a bakery is a delight. This bakery appears small on the outside but very spacious inside. The lighting is lovely.

Is it only bread they bake and sell? I have a bakery close to my house and they sell bread and other pasteries. The aroma from the building is always mouthwatering! 😃

Cool pictures. Thanks for sharing.

I think the cafe, restaurant and coffee shop business must continue to be innovative, not only about delicious taste but also being able to provide the best experience and impression for visitors who come, both in terms of design and architecture.

I agree. As people nowadays visit cafes for social media posts too, so they need to be innovative to attract more customers.
Good to talk to you.

Such an inspiring story you got there @isdarmady! From humble beginnings, starting from a tiny store to a fully fledged bakery, that's what business owners could emulate. It simply takes knowledge, experience, patience, dedication, and perseverance to achieve the level of success Jawara Bakery has attained. And they also made the right decision by heavily investing in the architecture and design of their establishment. This is truly something that makes your father proud and happy! 😊

Eventually, seating furniture and tables would be incorporated into that empty interior space for the convenience and enjoyment of loyal customers. 👍

This may be off the topic - just curious. What type of bread and pastries are the bestsellers there? Have photos? 😁

That's right, seeing the development of Jawara Bakery is very cool. If in the future their business will be even bigger, and have many branches in Indonesian cities, I think it can be an inspiration for everyone. Starting a business can be small, then it becomes big. Oh yes, this morning when I bought coconut bread at this bakery, I had a chance to talk to the owner. He said, he started by selling pastries with a pre-order system during Eid, Christmas or Chinese New Year.

If later in the empty space a table and chairs have been placed, I will definitely review it again.

These are the five bakery products that I think are the best-selling at this bakery. Coconut bread, brown bread, red bean bread, cheese chocolate bread and sweet bread. Sweet bread and coconut bread really enjoy eating with tea or coffee, I often buy them for my father.

I agree with that, the choice of blue and white colors is very soothing to our hearts and souls. I think, I also want to have a house or building that uses this color combination.
