Finding a Water Source with Drilled Wells and the Myths That Accompany It

Hello everyone and ASEAN Hive Community, how are you all? I hope you are always healthy and happy in this life. Always take care of your physical and mental health, because it looks like the world is under threat of the omicron variant of the covid1-9 pandemic (again?).

There are many ways for humans to maintain health, one of which is by cleaning themselves (such as always washing clothes, washing utensils, or bathing). To be able to carry out these activities, the availability of clean water is one of the most important conditions, if the water source is not clean, such as rust, mud, or contaminated with dirt, of course it cannot be used to carry out your activities.

Water Sources
What is the source of water in your country? In Indonesia, there is one state company that manages and distributes water for the community, namely PDAM (Perusahaan Daerah Air Minum or in English is a regional drinking water company). Even though the name is “drinking water”, the water that is distributed to people's homes cannot be directly drunk because the water has a smell and taste of chlorine. However, not all areas can be drained by water from the company. Some people, including myself, choose to drill wells for their own water sources.

I've lived 1.5 years in my new house. I bought a tiny house with a land area of 78 m2 in 2019, and occupied it in August 2020. I am happy as a small family, having my own house and living separately from my parents. Maybe it sounds strange to you when you hear that a married child still lives with his parents. But in Indonesia many people experience this condition for several reasons.

I'm happy living there, but we have a problem about the water source provided by the housing. The drilled wells we have have water that turns yellow and rusts. For 1.5 years I was patient enough (because I didn't have the money to find a new water source or build a new well) to accept the reality and try to filter manually and traditionally using sand, charcoal and fibers. However, this filter must be washed every month and the washing activity is very inconvenient. But I'm lucky, some time ago I got a lot of hydroponic making jobs and have a little money to make a new drilling wells.

Drilling Wells

One of the easy ways to get clean water sources is to use or utilize boreholes / drilling wells. Drilling wells is a way that is considered better, and more efficient than making traditional wells. Traditional wells are made using holes dug with rather large diameters, with varying depths. Meanwhile, the drilled well has a diameter of 1.25 inches (the size of a PVC pipe), then the water is sucked in with a pump and flowed to the water faucet at home, saving energy and saving time.

The cost of drilling the well, I had to pay for drilling services for IDR 1,200.00 (84 USD), buying a pipe for IDR 500,000 (35 USD), and a new pump for IDR 600,000 (42 USD), or a total of IDR 2,300,000 ( 160 USD), I don't know if this price is cheap or expensive in your country but I give a comparison of the minimum wage for workers in my city is IDR 2,500,000 (174 USD). Actually, if it can be paid in installments for 12 times the price is not too expensive, but in Indonesia the transaction system still has to use cash, especially those related to service work.

Myth
The point selected for drilling is determined by the wellbore. They are not geologists or know about soil structure but they work from experience. According to Pak Joko (bore well), he determined the drilling point based on several things, especially those related to mysticism and spirituality. Before he drills he will fast first (to be honest, I don't believe this, because if he gets a drilling order for 1 month, it means he has to fast for one month). After that, one day before carrying out the drilling, at night he put banana leaves at several points and saw the condition of dew on banana leaves in the morning. The banana leaf that has the most dew is the selected point.

I was taught to see how the water source is suitable for use or not. The way to test it is to use tea. Put the water into the seed container, then add the tea powder. If the water turns black, it means that the water source cannot be used, and if the water changes to the color of tea, it means that the water source is suitable for use.

OK, here's my story for today. How is the water source in your place? Do you use the same method as mine? give your comments and stories. Thank you.

Water resources in Thai every house will have a 1000 - 1500 L of water tank for storing and daily usage. For village area sometimes the water supply doesn't reached your area / home and that's the water tank use for. Enough to be use 2-3 days. But in city area there's no problem of water but still having water tank at all home.

that's a really cool way to distribute water to everyone, hopefully we can do that in the future.

Funny, it looks like mysticism is more important in this process. I would assume just like Cambodia, most of Indonesia's underground water tables haven't been properly mapped, which would make knowing the ideal depth to drill a lot easier. I have never heard of any Cambodian drilling companies using any mysticism to help locate the proper drilling site, but it makes me want to ask my wife if she's ever heard of anything like this.

I think it's true, there is no info about the condition of underground water in Indonesia. Mystical elements are often used, because they are the easiest to make excuses, especially for people who are lazy to think.

Btw, I get a good water source and it makes me shower more often than usual.
