Some time ago, I visited Higher Step Dining & Coffee. One of the hottest hangout and cafe spots in Medan City. Higher Step Dining & Coffee (hereinafter I will shorten it to Higher Step), located on Sunggal Streets, Medan Sunggal District – Medan City. For information, Medan Sunggal District is one of the outermost districts of Medan City. Initially, this area was a marginalized district compared to other districts in Medan City. However, development and progress of the times have created a lot of middle class and also upper class housing in the Sunggal district area.

The Best Hangout Place in Sunggal District

Higher Steps uses a very striking building for a cafe or coffee shop. Highers Steps is located on the third floor of a fairly large building. On the first floor, there is a bakery and salon. Meanwhile, Higher Steps is located on the second floor of this building. I immediately went up to the second floor to go to this coffee shop.

Before entering the Higher Steps, we will find a lobby table first. We will be asked about reservations, or discount vouchers that will be used when eating at this place and also fill out the guest book from this place. Higher Steps has a very interesting concept and design as a café, coffee shop or hang out place. It is very aesthetic with a variety of interior designs that are different from other coffee shops.

Higher Steps carries the concept of casual dining with a go green theme. When we are in this place, we feel like we are in an indoor garden with lots of organic and artificial green plants. In addition, the furniture used with higher steps is also very aesthetic and beautiful. There are lots of instagramable spots in this place and this makes Higher Steps very popular for the younger generation who like playing social media.

There are lots of food and drink menus available at Higher Steps Dining & Coffee. For food choices, there are various menus of western food, Indonesian food and also various kinds of snacks to accompany our hang out. The choice of drinks is even more complete, for coffee there is manual brew coffee as well as various other coffee signatures. For this visit, I tried a coffee signature that made me interested in trying it, namely Japanese Iced Coffee.

Japanese Iced Coffee
Have you ever heard of Japanese Iced Coffee or have you ever tried it? Japanese Iced Coffee is a cold coffee dish that is suitable for coffee lovers to enjoy. Japanese Iced Coffee is different from cold brew, although both include manual brews that are brewed with ice. The Cold Brew process is brewed by utilizing drops of ice cubes dripping with coffee grounds. The Cold Brew process usually lasts about 6 hours to get maximum brewing results.

Japanese Iced Coffee is made in a simpler way. The brewing process uses a manual brew coffee V60, but the difference lies in the percentage of ice cubes and hot water used for brewing. For example, if we brew 20 grams of coffee, it means we need about 300 ml of hot water. When making Japanese Iced Coffee, we halve the 300 ml with 150 ice cubes and 150 ml of hot water. Brewing coffee, hot water and ice cubes produces a balanced coffee taste.

The brewing process from Higher Steps is not too long. About 15 minutes, a cup of coffee served on my table. There was a bit of a funny story and misunderstanding between me and the maid from Higher Steps. I misunderstood and heard the maid's question. Usually, Japanese Iced Coffee is served in a coffee jar with ice cubes and a small cup to enjoy it. This time, I got Japanese Iced Coffee with a large glass and ice cubes.

I laughed at the presentation of this coffee. Seeing the presentation of coffee in large glasses like this, I feel this is more like iced tea than Japanese iced coffee. Moreover, Arabica coffee brewed with manual brew usually has a browner color than black. So, the color of the coffee is very similar to tea.

How does this coffee taste? even with all these misunderstandings, I can enjoy this Japanese Iced Coffee from Higher Steps. The fresh and cold taste of this coffee suits his taste. Unfortunately, when ice coffee is served in a large glass like this. The ice cubes will melt faster, I have to drink it faster and it won't chill to enjoy this Japanese Iced Coffee.
