Hola amigos amantes de la música, hace un tiempo había estado considerando hacer cover de alguna canción de Placebo, una de mis bandas favoritas, la cual oigo con frecuencia para relajarme o para llenarme de energía dependiendo de cada tema, mientras hago mis actividades diarias. Finalmente decidí no darle más largas y a continuación les presento el cover a dos guitarras y bajo de “This Picture” uno de los temas de la banda que más me gustan.

Hello friends music lovers, some time ago I had been considering to cover a song by Placebo, one of my favorite bands, which I listen to often to relax or to fill me with energy depending on each song, while I do my daily activities. Finally I decided not to give it any more time and here is the cover with two guitars and bass of "This Picture" one of the songs of the band that I like the most.

Para aquellos que no conocen a la banda Placebo, debo decirles que se trata de una banda londinense de rock alternativo formada en 1994. Aunque la banda está catalogada como rock alternativa la verdad es que tiene muchos matices e implica sonidos de muchos otros géneros como britpop, rock gotico, postpunk revival, entre otros. Sus liricas a menudo hacen referencia al uso de drogas, y a situaciones personales, problemas existenciales, fetiches, y en ocasiones se puede ver algo de crítica social.

For those who do not know the band Placebo, I must tell you that it is a London alternative rock band formed in 1994. Although the band is classified as alternative rock the truth is that it has many nuances and involves sounds of many other genres such as Britpop, gothic rock, postpunk revival, among others. Their lyrics often refer to drug use, personal situations, existential problems, fetishes, and sometimes you can see some social criticism.

“This Picture” fue lanzada en 2003 como parte del cuarto álbum de studio “Sleeping with Ghosts” un tema cuya letra habla de una relación que implica sadomasoquismo, una chica que utiliza a su compañero como un “cenicero emocional”. Según el vocalista de la banda esta letra está inspirada también en James Dean (actor estadounidense) de quien se dice que le gustaba que le apagaran cigarrillos en la piel.

"This Picture" was released in 2003 as part of the fourth studio album "Sleeping with Ghosts" a song whose lyrics talk about a relationship involving sadomasochism, a girl who uses her partner as an "emotional ashtray". According to the band's vocalist this lyric is also inspired by James Dean (American actor) who is said to have liked to have cigarettes put out on his skin.

Para la ejecución de este cover, utilicé la guitarra afinada en Mi Standard, se toca a 2 guitarras, aunque el disco parecer tener arreglos a 3 guitarras, de igual forma, el bajo que también destaca en este tema va a finado en Mi Standard. Para saber cómo se tocaba esta canción, descargué una tablatura, pero al notar que no estaba 100 correcta me di la tarea de ver varios videos de la banda tocando esta canción en vivo, curiosamente siempre la tocan con un tempo mucho más rápido.

For the execution of this cover, I used the guitar tuned in E Standard, it is played with 2 guitars, although the album seems to have arrangements with 3 guitars, in the same way, the bass that also stands out in this song is tuned in E Standard. To find out how to play this song, I downloaded a tablature, but noticing that it was not 100 correct I took the task of watching several videos of the band playing this song live, curiously they always play it with a much faster tempo.

Algo que me tomó tiempo para terminar esta canción fue la búsqueda de los efectos de la guitarra, pues estoy acostumbrado a tocar con mucha distorsión, pero estas guitarras tiene un sonido con bastante “Crunch” de manera que tuve que probar distintos plugins para escuchar cual se acercaba más al sonido deseado. Algo que también trabajé fue los volúmenes y el paneo de los instrumentos de manera que se pudiesen escuchar de manera clara cada uno.

Something that took me some time to finish this song was the search of the guitar effects, because I'm used to play with a lot of distortion, but these guitars have a sound with a lot of "crunch" so I had to try different plugins to hear which one was closer to the desired sound. Something I also worked on was the volumes and the panning of the instruments so that each one could be heard clearly.
