Intente correr tras ella, pues no podía entender.

— Me preguntaba continuamente.

Papá me abrazó mientras sonreía.

Él llegó a escuchar mis preguntas, y solo respondió:

No me engañes —

Menos comprendo, menos entiendo.

The more I understand, the less I understand.

I looked mom in the eyes before I left the house, I had already hugged dad in the kitchen while she was upstairs in the bedroom. I knew he was grieving something I didn't grasp, only until mom came down from her room with some things he once gave her in my presence did I understand what the situation was.

-I'll just take these with me, Will," she said, "I may stop by from time to time to see the kids, or to check on things, but for now, I'll leave them in your hands. I just hope that all this passes as quickly as possible, and that everything goes back to normal.

Dad could barely raise his eyes to hear her words, who was telling him all this while she looked at her new phone and left in a hurry.

I tried to run after her, as I could not understand. The woman I loved the most, just stopped loving us, making one that glowed in me, stop giving me warmth.

Mom had been with Dad for a long time, and as far as I knew, they were the most exemplary married couple in the community, at school, at work. All I knew was that at home, they treated each other like Richard and my sister, they could barely look each other in the eye and say thank you for any gesture.

I didn't understand how two people who had once formed a family could now just say goodbye to each other and become strangers, united only by the children they had once had.
I did not understand some things, at school they always told me:

  • "There is no love like a mother's love"-.

But my heart could hardly understand what things led to her leaving home, leaving us alone and helpless, leaving us without her love and affection, and simply treating us as nothing.

-Is there no love like a mother's love? - I kept asking myself.

I remember the end of that summer afternoon. Mom's name was hardly, if ever, spoken in the house. My siblings acted as if she never existed, but me, I just spent hours trying to understand Mom as she wished, but failing to do so, I lived a slave to guilt.

Dad hugged me as he smiled. It was the first time he had done so in a few days, and I was happy for him, but I didn't understand why everyone acted normally, as if they didn't love Mom.

In my mind there was only the expression that there was no love like mother's love, I could say that during the nights that was the only thing I thought about. How was it possible that mother did not love me? What had I done wrong not to deserve her love?

He came to hear my questions, and only answered:

-It's just that she wasn't your mother Frank-.

I could feel my heartbeat slowly stop. My eyes began to flood with small drops loaded with agony of years, and that now were only free thanks to the answer of why mom did not love me.

My eyes rested in front of daddy. My hands became cold and my heart fragile.

-You're, you're lying, Dad. Don't fool me -

I'd once heard that the first step to acceptance was denial, though I didn't understand that either.

He had never joked about it with me. Still, I knew Dad was not a man of lies, and he always told the truth, no matter what effect it had.

-I'm sorry I haven't told you the truth for so long Frank, I'm so sorry. -

His tears, those tears, were laden with years of lies and deceit, a deceit in which the only one living was me, and who would believe it.

The lump in my throat I could not contain, and my whole soul was unraveling as I came to understand things more. That wish I had once desired had come true at the most inopportune moment of my life, and which was so difficult to understand.

For years I had tried to understand how Richard and my sister felt, how mom and dad felt, but no one ever tried to understand me in my ordeal, and worse, none of them tried to understand me even a little bit.

-So who was that woman? - I asked

-She was just another woman in life, who came before you were born. But when she learned that your mother had abandoned you, she decided to stay with us, with the exception that you would leave with your mother when you turned 10, but I didn't want that to be the case, so she left our side.

The less I understand, the less I understand.

-Could this leap solve my problems? After all, it was me who made who I thought was my mother, leave home, making dad the most unhappy man. After all, not even my own mother has loved me, I just have to take this leap... -
