—Jamás los he dejado solo mi amor.

Twelve days of his life were enough to observe the end of what he had once built with so much effort, but which, due to the vicissitudes of life, had become a pile of ashes impossible to rebuild, impossible to mend.

-Hi daddy, you know how much I love you, don't you? - said Jianna, his little girl.

Her tender eyes made it impossible to question the reason for her affection, although it was strange that she did not give him a kiss and hug as usual, in fact, it was the first time Richard heard words like these come out of her mouth.

Strangely, he only answered:

-Hello my beautiful flower, of course I know you love me, I love you immensely too, so much that you can't imagine...-.

Before he could say anything else, the little girl interrupted him.

-If so, Daddy, then why have you left us alone for so long? -

The intrigue began to make a dent in his head, a sea of restless questions inside him gave way to despair.

-I have never left you alone, my love. I don't know what you are talking about my dear, as you well know, I have had to work a little more than usual, but I have never left you alone, and I won't leave you either, I would rather die than that -".

The entrance of Theodor, his youngest son to the conversation, shocked Richard, but above all, seeing the little boy's shirt torn and, moreover, full of ashes, while his eyes had turned red from the smoke.

-For the love of God Theodor, what in the world has happened to you, my life? -

The little boy's serenity in his answer caused more intrigue.

-Don't worry daddy, I'm fine as always," he said as he smiled.

Jianna's calmness disturbed Richard even more. She was in the habit of taking care of her brother more than anything else, no matter if she was the one who got hurt.

Richard looked at Jianna's hands, splinters of wood were embedded in her hands, while some of her fingers had no nails.

-But Jianna, what the hell has happened! What has happened to you people? -

The little girl only smiled as she looked at Richard in anguish. While Richard only held his head in his hands, seeing that his 2 children were hurt.

Quickly, he picked up the house phone, dialed Susan's number, his ex-wife, to complain that she had left the children in his case in such a state.

The tone of the phone rang several times, causing his anguish to increase imminently, making his heart beat restlessly.

-Ho... hello- A faint, almost whispering voice was heard on the other end of the phone.

-Susan, is that you? -

-Hello, who is this? I can't hear you very well, sir, can you speak louder? -

-Susan, Susan. It's me... Ahm it's me, I'm the children's father. What on earth has happened to them, can you explain it to me? -

The silence, on the other side, created a void in Richard's mind, while waiting for an answer to his question seemed to take longer than usual.

-Why can't I remember my name? Why didn't I tell Susan my name? - Richard thought to himself, recognizing that he was forgetting what his name was.

-Susan for God's sake! Answer.

A man's voice then sounded on the other end:

-Who is it my love? -

-There's a man saying he's the father of some children, he wanted to know what had happened to them....

-Susan, Susan! It's me Wilfred, answer please- -The caller hung up with no answer.

The caller hung up without any response, as fear began to grip Richard, remembering that he had mentioned the name of his uncle, Wilfred Macmillan, who had passed away only a few days before.

Richard hung up the phone. The sound in the house this time was deafening, his gaze wandering around looking for the children, who were by his side as he made the call, but this time, he was looking everywhere in the house, without finding them.

-Jianna, Theodor! - Richard shouted in desperation.

In the kitchen, a loud bang sounded, apparently from the coffee pot, causing the smoke from the pot to engulf the whole house, preventing him from even seeing his hands. Terror began to overwhelm him, as his hands became less steady.

Groping, Richard reached for the door handle, which, strangely enough, became a piece of hot metal that burned his hands. The smoke made him start coughing loudly as he tried to feel for the children and try to get them out.

-Daddy, help us, please help us! - The screams began to get louder and louder, but at the same time, they were getting farther and farther away as Richard was losing consciousness due to shortness of breath.

Little by little, his eyes were going out, while he was falling to the ground due to the lack of oxygen he had, at the same time, he was losing consciousness of what was happening. Just before falling, he only heard the whisper of a voice:

-Come on, wake up you fucking psycho! It's time for you to take your medicine.

Richard had had that dream again, the dream of saving his family from the fire, a fire that he himself had caused.

(ENG) Interesting way of presenting the events of the story as if they were a descending cascade of common events that lead us without warning to a final twist and an unexpected ending. Thanks for sharing it with us. Regards

Saludos.
