English

It seems that the moment we are born, the starting whistle is blown for a race we do not understand. This ‘fictitious race’ throws up obstacles along the way; sometimes we leap over them with energy, whilst at other times we get tangled up, fall and even roll about whilst still caught up in them.

That is life: a constant, exhausting and overwhelming race, with various twists and turns, because whilst we’re running, we often stop to enjoy some leisure time – something that is frowned upon by many, even though leisure is, in essence, nothing more than an opportunity to recharge our batteries. The dilemma here is whether the person recharging is overdoing their rest and becoming lethargic, watching their peers pass them by.
1- Leisure in life
In my view, leisure is that necessary time to recharge one’s batteries 🪫; that is to say, that time to take a break from the many responsibilities and pastimes that each person has.
However, these moments are often mislabelled as laziness or idleness, unfairly stigmatising those who are simply giving their whole being a breather.
The fact is, the race keeps throwing blind obstacles at us every few kilometres (years), introducing more hurdles (problems) to overcome, as if we were, in a way, the pastime of higher beings watching us through a screen.
The fact is that exhaustion—more mental than physical—leaves us in a state of limbo that even we ourselves cannot quite understand, because on the one hand there is weariness, and on the other there is a suspension of basic needs: no appetite, no thirst, and even sleep vanishes. We’re just there, still, breathing, trying to get our battery back up to 100% 🔋 and get going again. But, as we well know, the body is so wise that it prefers to recharge its energy slowly rather than secretly topping it up with food, only for it to drop back to 0 within a few minutes.
So, if we know this and can recognise it, why do we judge ourselves or others when it comes to moments of leisure? What we want is at odds with what we’re made to feel is real, and we’re caught in the paradox of rest and an excess of work.
2- Obligations
Throughout our lives, from childhood onwards, we take on or acquire various responsibilities, which vary according to our age and stage of life.
For example: a baby is taught to speak, and although this is normal, it is often treated as an obligation rather than an incentive to learn. If we analyse it, it becomes a competition between the mother and father over what the child should say first, when in reality they should simply let the first word emerge naturally.

Next comes crawling, walking with support and then unaided, with the falls that are part of the process (a sign of learning). And that’s when we realise, as adults, that we’ve always fallen, but now it seems to hurt more, because at least as children we could cry without fear of what others might say, whereas today that… that seems more like a luxury.
Those obligations that pile up as we cover the miles reinforce the idea that striving is a natural part of the process, and that no matter how much we run, holding our breath, with sweat pouring down our foreheads and from every fibre of our bodies, the finish line will always remain a long way off, for some strange reason that I still don’t understand.
3- Dreams
The dreams we have, or rather the daydreams we have whilst wide awake in the midst of this endless race, are nothing more than the promises we feed ourselves every day, like a dose of vitamins or something similar.
But beyond that, they are also the words others speak to us – those that come across as false promises, false recognition of the effort we put in, as we naively believe we’ll be rewarded for that effort and dedication.
The fact is, reality is so harsh that we refuse to accept it, and for others it is so bitter that they add heaps of sugar to make it palatable. Because you dream of a better future and, just as you’re about to cross the finish line, someone has decided to erase it with a rubber and, using a pencil that seems indelible, draw a new goal light-years away.

“Dreams are just dreams,” many say, but what are we without dreams?
At the very least, they give us hope, even if that hope never comes to fruition. And, on the other hand, there are those who have managed to come close to that goal, but just when they think they’ve made it, that they can stop, they realise that the goal itself was merely a gateway to the next level. Because life isn’t just a single stage: when you finally reach the point you were meant to reach, the next challenge opens up, which you must overcome to keep dreaming of your new ‘goals’.
4- Reality
Reality can be subjective for many, superfluous for others and different for most. The thing is this: for some, the race is a relay, where you have your loyal teammate cheering you on and running alongside you; but there’s also the race you run alone, with that team that sits around complaining that you’re running badly or that you’re wasting your energy; and, finally, there are those people who do triathlons because they feel too capable to just run in a straight line, when the race has never been a single-lane affair.
In this reality, we can analyse the following on an individual basis:
We all live on dreams, knowing that they take too long to come true, and also that many change along the way.
Leisure is necessary, but we mustn’t overdo it; resting isn’t the same as idleness, and being proactive isn’t the same as guaranteed growth.
We must be aware that everyone runs at their own pace and everyone learns to decipher their dreams, knowing that each person will take a different amount of time.

External and self-imposed pressures do not mean we must agree to everything whilst feeling inferior, because at the end of the day, however much we may not accept it, we are all—and always will be—equal from now until the end of time.
