1000037388.png

Everyone knows exactly what their boundaries are: which ones are made of elastic — that is, those that can be stretched a little further than usual — and which ones are made of thick rope, the sort that, no matter how hard you pull, tighten so firmly that the recoil can even cause you to fall.

1000037390.png

However, the crucial thing is to understand that each person’s own boundaries clash with those of others, and that is where we must learn to respect them just as much as we respect our own.

However, when we talk about boundaries, many tend to focus on romantic relationships, where boundaries define respect. But these boundaries must be established in all kinds of relationships and from an early age. As parents, we must respect our children’s boundaries, as they—although still in the process of understanding this concept—also have boundaries that must be respected and safeguarded.

For example, we have seen—or rather, experienced—the situation faced by those of us who are older siblings: we have had to look after younger siblings and take on responsibilities that go beyond our duty. That is where the boundary is breached, as the request for ‘help’ comes across more as an imposition that seems impossible to refuse.

In that sense, the boundary has been erased and our space – or rather, our private time – is curtailed. It is as if our parents were invaders within our own territory, imposing their demands without even asking, ‘Can you do this?’

This imposition, which is sometimes accompanied by a heavy burden of maternal or paternal victimisation, makes us feel guilty, and we give in, thereby condemning our own childhood. However, when ‘no’ emerges as a definitive answer, we become so many negative things that we didn’t realise we were to them. In the end, those words remain lodged like a thorn that continues to hurt even though we have grown up.

For this reason, I insist that boundaries must be set and upheld by us as parents for our children. After all, they are under no obligation to look after their siblings, let alone serve as the flawless benchmark for younger children, because they, too, have every right to make mistakes.

Furthermore, freedom is not just about being able to do whatever you want, make mistakes and correct them, or simply learn from your errors. Freedom is also about being able to express ourselves without fear of being judged; that is, being able to put forward our ideas, ask questions or challenge certain issues if we spot shortcomings.

Freedom is also being able to say tactfully: ‘I think you’re wrong’, because pointing out a fault in someone else, when expressed in a respectful manner, is not arrogance: it is genuine help that, unfortunately, is often frowned upon and rejected.

Based on this, and knowing that we are not perfect machines — because not even a machine is — we can be sure that our freedom depends on how we ourselves view it, live it and express it. Being overly submissive, being afraid to speak our minds, or agreeing with everything even when we do not like what others are doing or saying, goes against our own freedom. We become slaves to the thoughts of others and to a way of life that does not belong to us. We must remember that slavery was abolished many, many years ago; so why do we put chains round our necks if that is part of a painful past?

1000037391.png

Being a partner, wife, husband, mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, daughter or son does not mean we belong to someone else. We are thinking, free and living individuals who are connected to one another through family, friendship or work ties, but that never implies that our voice should be silenced or that we must agree to everything.

1000037392.png

Let’s be free in every sense: let’s be able to think what we want without feeling guilty, let’s enjoy life with respect, and let’s value who we are, because we are, in essence, different and yet wonderfully imperfect.

This reflection was inspired by Initiative No. 25 of ‘Séptimo Día’ by Dr @emiliorios for @holos-lotus.

From his text, I’d like to highlight the following: ‘Personal boundaries are what will keep us mentally healthy, as our integrity and dignity are priceless’.

Be your own judge and jury, because no one knows better than oneself when we have sinned through arrogance or pride and, in doing so, have harmed another. Apologising will always be the way forward, but let’s not overuse this recourse: in the end, repeated words lose their meaning and end up becoming tiresome.

Me encantó tu reflexión.
