I set myself the task of conducting an internal survey within my own family. With my mobile phone in hand and the gallery open, I showed the image to each person in turn, waiting for their interpretations – both literal and emotional.
My aim here is to discover whether blood ties bring with them similar perspectives or, on the contrary, to reaffirm that every human being is a distinct thinking universe, however many family ties there may be.
As I said, I showed the photo to each person individually and, whilst they were looking at it, I recorded their responses so I could transcribe them into words.

A photo, a family and a flood of different perceptions

Husband:
‘I see a woman in her sixties, with delicate features; you can tell she has taken care of her appearance over the years. Furthermore, the surroundings themselves look particularly well-organised, revealing a taste for tidiness, which reflects her inner structure.
Emotionally speaking, I see a woman filled with longing. Her gaze isn’t entirely focused; it’s rather unfocused, as if her body were in the here and now, but her mind were dwelling on years gone by: perhaps on a moment she wasn’t able to enjoy to the full, or on something she regrets not having done.”
Mother:
“I see a slender woman; her posture is firm and strong, which is evident in her physical build. She stands upright, without slouching. Her attire displays feminine charm, as she seeks to highlight her features through the colours; on the other hand, her grey hair looks beautifully flattering, adding light to her face.
Now, trying to look beyond the surface, I sense the inner strength in her posture. She stands firm by the window, like a captain who surveys everything and knows exactly what is happening simply by observing it. But it is not an inquisitive gaze, the sort that seeks to stir up gossip; it is rather the posture of a guardian, as if she were somehow on the alert for some kind of danger that we cannot see.”
Father:
“She looks like a cheerful lady; she has a smile that frames her face, and the passing of the years is evident in her hair. The front of her house looks well-kept, from the paintwork to the window.
As for my impression of her, I’d say she’s a reserved and analytical woman. Her eyes, although they look serene, also seem lonely, as if she had lost her life partner and that is why she gazes without a fixed point, as if searching for him somewhere without finding him.”
Brother:
“You see a lady of a similar age to our parents. Her face does not show many wrinkles, nor does she appear to be wearing make-up; she looks simple overall.
On the other hand, it’s clear she doesn’t rely on superficiality to express her spirit. You can see it in the posture she adopts by the window: she knows she’s being watched and she likes being watched; perhaps she was a heartbreaker in her day. I might say she’s a Juliet from days gone by in the modern age.
She exudes a sense of calm, the sort found in mothers who have already raised their children and are now enjoying their grandchildren.”
Eldest daughter, Rocío (aged 9):
‘She’s a grandmother, about seventy years old. She’s wearing grey clothes, has brown eyes and her hair is greyish-white.
She looks lovely because she has a happy face. I think she likes knitting and looking after the plants in her garden.’

Younger daughter, Julieta (aged 7):
“She’s an elderly lady with grey hair, and you can see bits of brown underneath. Her clothes look comfortable; they’re grey, just like her hair.
She looks like a very loving lady; I feel she likes cooking savoury and sweet dishes, and I also imagine her knitting clothes for her grandchildren.”
A family analysis of the image
On the one hand, we can see the male perspective from my husband and my father. Both perspectives focused on the life experienced by the woman in the image; they inferred both loss and longing.
My husband managed to see a mind rooted in years gone by—that is, a woman who, in a way, lives through her memories and experiences—whilst my father identified the loneliness stemming from the loss of a loved one. In both cases, they captured that melancholy which seeks neither to upset nor to reproach, but is borne in silence.
On the other hand, my mother’s perspective is more similar to my own. In both analyses, there is a clear common thread: we focused on the woman’s maternal role, recognised her inner strength and saw a sense of structural leadership.
My mother described her as a captain, a carer alert to dangers, which resonates strongly with my vision of a woman of fortitude who teaches her children never to give up. For us, this woman’s calm and peace are not passivity, but absolute resilience.
In contrast, my brother arrived at a more vibrant and romantic perspective. He added his own nuance, transforming the woman into the embodiment of a memorable Juliet who does not depend on vanity or banality; a woman who enjoys the present with elegance, being the master of her own story.

Finally, the youngest girls, Rocío and Julieta, captured the lady’s calm in a face of pure love. For them, seeing that elderly person was synonymous with a loving grandmother who cares for and advises.
They perceived the warmth by imagining various scenes inside that house which remains out of sight. For both of them, the simplicity reflected goes far beyond her clothes or her undyed hair.
With this, I reaffirm that family ties are not a common thread of patterns; in other words, each person is a separate, thinking and feeling being, who contributes by sharing different perspectives on the same subject.
This is where healthy debates can arise, with the understanding that what one person perceives will never be one hundred per cent the same as what others perceive. With this, I emphasise that, very often, we allow ourselves to be guided solely by what we see, without analysing what really lies behind it.
Ultimately, it is always better to think before speaking than to cause harm with unfounded prejudice.
This piece forms part of a personal psychological experiment, duly consented to by my family members.
Bendiciones🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Epa, esto si me ha gustado.
Maravilloso trabajo para hacer el post.
