Street Arts I Captured in Penang, Malaysia and Singapore September 2015 - ASEAN Hive Community Challenge #98 + 11th HPUD March 2024
Hi, ASEAN Hive Community! I got excited about this week's community challenge as it reminded me of my trip in September 2015 to two different countries in less than two weeks: Malaysia and Singapore.
I scored a cheap flight from Cebu to Kuala Lumpur. I thought of taking a bus from KL to Penang, but flying was cheaper. I also thought of taking another bus from Penang to Singapore but flying was also cheaper. Hahaha! So, I grabbed all the cheap flights and I never had to worry about taking the long bus rides.
Love Lane Street in George Town, Penang
This iron sculpture in Penang talks about how shophouses became cheap hostels popular for backpacker tourists.
Another iron sculpture says that the rich businessmen living on Muntri Street kept their mistresses in this area.
The Indian Boatman
This wall art can be found at Stewart Lane. This is the second painting made by a Russian artist, Yulia Volchkova.
I made a selfie on this one because I think it's a beautiful painting.
It was raining that afternoon so I wasn't able to continue walking around. There was a lot of street art here in George Town that was getting popular.
Haji Lane in Singapore
My Singaporean friend showed me around some quiet popular places. We went to Haji Lane and took photos of me of this famous wall art.
It is said that the artwork depicts the Aztecs. The Aztecs are the indigenous people of Mexico before the Spanish occupation. The colorful mural was made by Didier Jaba Mathieu, from Colombia.
This wall of art is quite Instagrammable.
My friend was a good photographer. Haha!
The Arab Street
We walked around Arab Street checking some shops and restaurants until I got tired. I just wanted to take a rest. We went to a peaceful area behind a mosque and I decided to sit here near these artworks. My friend eventually took a snapshot.
March 1st is HPUD time
Just dropping this here for my Hive Power-Up for March.
Thank you so much ASEAN Hive for this week's challenge as I got the chance to reminisce about my solo backpacking trips in 2015. :D

Some really neat street art. I like the Indian boatman the most. It's great when flights work out cheeper and save tons of travel time 😊 Happy HPUD!!
Yeah, it's an amazing artwork. Happy HPUD. It was so cheap to travel back then. I don't know now.

THank you @innerblocks and @thekittygirl for the curation :d
Nice street art! I think I haven't explored that lane in Singapore so I didn't know about it til now.
I will never know if not a local has shown this to me. The Couchsurfing community could recommend so many places to see.
ng couch surf ka pala sa SG?
Yes, Penang and SG during these trips. :D
I really love the artworks you shared po. Napakatalented nila at ang sarap lang maglakad sa kanyang lugar 🥰♥️
Yes, nakak stress-free ang mga artworks.
I'm sure it was a lovely trip and the places were quite picturesque. Nice pictures @itravelrox
Yes, it was a lovely trip and the locals were nice.
I've seen some of the street art in Penang. It's quite classy and goes with the overall theme of the city. They also have a designated street art park there and this cuts down on illegal graffiti all over the place. If it weren't for the abnormally small sidewalks, I would really like Penang!
Ah yes, the sidewalks are really small. But it was doable, so nice to go on bikes.
I just didn't like feeling like I was going to be run over by cars all the time :)
Haha. Too bad I didn't explore Penang enough.
There's a lot of good in Penang but the Georgetown area was not my favorite. Very crowded and busy streets. Fantastic and cheap Indian food though!
Wow! These are amazing street arts, I just hope like this will be the fad in our beloved Philippines instead of seeing walls vandalized or just being peed on! Sad.... I hope our government will make it a city wide challenge to have wall arts or graffiti contests so kids can develop their artistry as well.
Wow! You are really a certified lakwatchera dearest! Haha. Happy for you you have been to many countries already.
Good luck on the challenge.
Oh btw, I love the Boatman art among others.☺️😉
The problem is some Filipinos have no discipline, they want to vandalize everywhere. Thank you. Yep, I love the boatman.
So sad really, they thought vandalism is a form of Art🤭🤭
Ok lang sana pag nasa maayos na location for graffiti art.

Nice! The Aztec one is so edgy, I love it! Hope to see more of these nice street art.
Yon lang, that was the only chance I was able to take photos of the street arts in Penang and SG.
