Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1110)

Hello Everyone!

Starting off with a fizzle, A brief hard freeze, Ye ole water system is back online & A burst of raking leaves!

Alright, if I do not start writing soon I will never get to working on this entry. Some time back I made the text file for it... and managed to get the day and number typed in... but I pretty much fizzled out after that. Turning all the distractions off means doing more than simply 'enjoying the silence' (mentally speaking) because the entire purpose of it is to devote some 'focused time' on doing a single task.

Which in this case happens to be writing... but lately I have also been doing it (to some degree) while working on coding projects. As I was saying a few days ago... there is simply too many various topics (and subtopics) to be explored... and it is easy to 'get lost along the way' while in search of an answer to something. As a side note the interconnected nature of everything is 'in and of itself' a fascinating realm to explore... so I often have to dodge that pitfall as well.

Anyways, I was up late again last night working on various coding projects... and yet again was able to make some minor progress with a few of them. I dunno if it was all really worth being up that late for... but I at least did not fall asleep with various unresolved 'project related things' nagging at my attention. It was also toasty warm in the cabin so I am sure that added to the whole getting a good night's rest thing.

Having gone outside many times throughout the evening I gotta say that it was pretty frigid out there... and the minor wind that had picked up 'cut like a knife' as the saying goes. The first time that I went out there was rather early in the evening... because I forgot to drop the tarp on the chicken coop... which was not that long after dark... and it was already that kind of 'coldness' that made me happy for having a warm jacket and chapstick on my lips!

During the day today it was not much different and it was not until very late in the afternoon that things started to warm up a bit... just in time for the long shadows from the pine trees to cast everything in shade. In other words by the time it actually 'felt warm' the sun was nearly setting and whoa did things start to turn chilly again quickly after that.

Thankfully, by then I had already done most of my routine chores... and gotten the water system back online... along with getting the water lines purged of air. The only part of the system that I did not bring back online was the hot water supply line that runs to the shelter site. Since I had no plans on using it I figured that I could 'fool with it later' when I actually need it... which will probably be tomorrow.

I also got a good amount of the leaves raked up from around the solar shack... and also from where they have been forming a small 'drift' along the uphill side of the deck. Over the last few days I have been 'pecking away' at the leaves in small bursts and plan to continue doing so. Which hopefully means that over the next few days all those small efforts will pay off... and it will be one more winter preparation item that I can drop from my list.

There is still a lot that I need to do (including stacking up some firewood) but overall I have managed to stay 'ahead of the curve' as far as the seasonal chores go. Although there are a few remaining grapevines that I have not harvested... I am sure that I will get them soon. I am kind of excited to see how different the process is (and how much more brittle the vines are) now that we have gotten a good hard freeze.

On a different note. My elder dog has been getting 'up and about' on her own recently and although she is still a bit wobbly... she is making it around much better without my assistance. It has been too cold of late for her to spend much time on the deck outside... but during the times she is out there she picks herself up and runs the border in a circle until she wears herself out.

Basically after many weeks of her getting such 'exercise' (in the beginning with lots of assistance from me) she is now 'back on her feet' so to speak. Hopefully the trend holds but I am sure that there will be 'good days and bad days' when it comes to all of that stuff. For now she seems a heck of a lot more content getting around on her own than to have to 'suffer the indignities' of me carrying her around.

In other words it is good to see her happy about 'walking on her own' and also seeing her (a few times) even seem like her younger self again for a brief moment before her age caught up to her. As far as dogs go I would place her firmly in the 'epic' category... and am thankful that the process of her 'aging out' has not been a painful one for either of us.

To be blunt here. It has all worn on me and kind of overshadowed the last year or so of things and although it is heavy... it is also lighter than a feather given the level of love (and duty) that has been exchanged between us over the previous twelve odd years. In short it is an honor to be there for her and help her go through this part of her life with dignity and grace because she sure earned it.

Well, on that note... I think that I am going to wrap this entry up and mayhaps work on that next 'Something Different' entry unless I fizzle out on it again! I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice time.

Look at how dark the shadows are under the pines near sunset!
