Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1114)

Hello Everyone!

A foggy fugue, Almost a sunny day, More sleep skewing, Dimly lit spaces make for achy eyesight & Adding to the berm!

Alright, it is that time of the evening again when it is time to write... and although I am not as 'off track' as I was last night... I am a bit late on getting started here. At least I had the text editor open on time (near sunset) but since then I have not done much in the way of writing... or even trying to write.

Sometimes it is like I am in a foggy fugue state and no matter how strong the espresso is... I cannot seem to shake it off. I guess that is something that happens with age... but in this case I think it has more to do with simply not focusing on the task at hand... and spreading my attention too thin.

Anyways, the weather cleared up today and it would have gotten rather sunny if it were not for so much cloud cover. It probably was not nearly as dark out as it seemed throughout the day... but since I am in a shaded area... any amount of clouds lends a shadowy cast to everything... and makes it seem a bit darker outside than it really is.

Not that the weather mattered much because I was once again up super late tinkering with some coding projects... which of course resulted in me sleeping in late this morning. That is two nights in a row of my sleep cycle getting super skewed... and although I enjoy 'burning the midnight oil' it definitely leaves me feeling out of wack afterwards.

As far as the sleep thing goes I really do need to get a handle on it before it becomes my new routine. All the other good reasons aside... working on stuff late into the night like that (at the end of the day) when I am already fatigued... makes reading documentation and remembering the steps that need to be done... way too frigging hard.

Although it took me a while... I finally got in the habit of putting my reading glasses on when I start the editing process for these entries... and then keeping them on as I do other computer related stuff afterwards. It did not take me very long to figure out that half the time that I was feeling mildly frustrated while working on complex projects... was because... I was (unconsciously) struggling to make everything not be fuzzy by squinting at it!

Thankfully my overall vision has remained the same since I noticed it first beginning to degrade back in 2017 but reading 'fine print' sure has gotten a bit trickier. Of course for anything that is 'too small' I still wind up zooming in on it with a smartphone camera... but by and large the glasses do the trick most of the time.

I still think that much of the difficulty with vision that I have is from spending all too many years living in dimly lit spaces... and more often than not spending long hours reading books in dimly lit conditions. Considering that most of the time that I was lucky to have access to a single power outlet (if there was power available at all) and generally had a single light... it is no surprise that so much eyestrain under those conditions was not helpful in the long run.

The 'funny' thing is that I love brightly lit living places and really dislike dimly lit ones... but I always wind up with dimly lit ones. As a side note even my current setup is rather dim... and I have two lights that I use and a third if things start feeling 'too dark' or I just need some extra light. Part of it is that I have yet to find a decent 'new' light bulb that actually puts out the kind of lumens it is supposed to.

In short, give me a true 60-watt incandescent bulb any day instead of the sort of 'light' available from most of the 'new' bulbs that I have tried... which all seem to produce variations of the same soft sickly light... with no real 'brightness' to it! Do not get me wrong because I sure do use a lot of those 'new' bulbs because they are so dang efficient... but I miss the good ole days of a bare 60-watt bulb shining brightly!

On a different note, I did the same thing that I did yesterday... and did not get outdoors until late in the afternoon to do my routine chores. While I was at it I took the time to add some more clay, leaves and topsoil to that new berm... but honestly it is still going to take a lot of work to get it where I want it to be. Perhaps if I keep pecking away at it each day it will get there!

Well, I think that I am going to keep this entry short and sweet and get on with the editing and posting portion of my evening. I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice time.

My visions still pretty good at 52 and I rarely wear glasses - lucky because I spent a LOT of time reading in dimly lit rooms! Saying that, I definitely need them to read, and my vision isn't as good when I'm tired, stressed or run down.

Thankfully mine is holding up as well for the most part. I am slowly catching on that I need to notice it as soon at is starts happening and get the glasses on ASAP!

Enjoyed reading your post, as always! Can really relate to the occasional foggy state of mind 😅
Had to go look up exactly what a 'berm' is, so thanks for the addition to my vocabulary haha

I feel the same about the light bulbs.

Some of your eye problems might be hereditary, I had to start wearing reading glasses in my late 30s, I have the strength the doctor says I need and on some things, I have to use a magnifying glass plus my glasses.

I was wondering why someone hasn't come up with a program that separates all of the votes and tips away from the replies, where you can only see new replies.
