Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1118)

Hello Everyone!

Curbing a skewed sleep cycle, Pumping out the tub, Better weather & Daydreaming about berms!

Alright, I am mostly on track tonight with my routines and hopefully I can curb writing late into the evening... like I did for the last two entries. The writing itself is fun and I often enjoy it but when it comes to editing... and especially editing while fatigued... lets just say it is not my favorite activity whether I am tired or not.

In other words it can become quite the slog and as with yesterday evening... it can leave me making the actual post way closer to midnight than I would like to be doing it. Heck, even now I am watching the clock and thinking: Whoa! I hope this one does not turn out as lengthy as the last one.

By the time I got all that wrapped up I got a bit of a 'second wind' and dove back into working on some of my coding projects. I also somehow (miraculously) even managed to stop working on that stuff earlier than the last few days... and got some much needed rest.

Although it was incredibly hard to force myself to do it... I even got up early this morning... and stayed up... even though I had to continually fight off the urge to simply go back to sleep. For the first many hours after waking I was way foggier than I usually am after waking... and although I have been up for nearly eleven hours I have yet to fully shake the feeling off completely.

Regardless of feeling a bit on the 'puny' side of things... I managed to enjoy my hike as I brought the water system back online early in the day. Much of the wind had died down so although it was still 'on the chilly side of things' it was overall some rather nice weather.

Since I have been cooped up for a while I decided that it was a good time to get a hot bath... and I swear I am getting spoiled on pumping the old water out of the tub with that sump pump. I have even somewhat mastered the art of both holding the output pipe of the pump in one hand (so it does not thrash around) and plugging the pump into an extension cord whose female end is under the edge of my foot.

As wonky as that arrangement sounds, it sure beats getting smacked in the face by the pipe... or it blasting water all over me as I am plugging the pump in. The funny thing is that every time that I do it I am like 'just put it on a switch already' and each time I never pursue the idea (or even think about it again) until the next time that I have to pump the water from the tub.

I still do my old 'tried and true' method of bailing the tub out by hand occasionally... but having that pump during cold weather like this sure is handy. When the weather is cold and I have to bale it out manually my frigging hand will get so cold (from the water) that I will switch hands... and in the end I wind up with two freezing cold hands... and have to use them to clean the tub out the rest of the way afterwards... which yeah is awkward at best!

Anyways, while I waited on the tub to fill I busied myself doing some routine chores around the place... and also worked on that small berm near the cabin some more. I pretty much did the same thing that I did before by gathering some leaves from the 'drift' near the deck... adding them to the berm... and then covering the leaves with topsoil from around the solar shack.

Over the coming days I am going to need to add more clay to that berm... and also get a lot more of the leaves cleaned up from around the dog yard... which I will add to the berm as well. In the beginning I was not all that sure that I was going to keep it (or not) but it has grown on me the last few days... and I have caught myself more than a few times daydreaming about working on it.

Well, on that note... I am going to wrap this up and get on with the rest of my evening routines. I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice time!

This mushroom cap is oddly shaped like the stump it is growing in!

You got the "I need to fix this next time before I use it" attitude from your Mother.

Maybe you can clamp a longer handle on a small pot, and make it like a big ladle for hand bailing the water. I have Raynauds and even in the wind, my hands go numb.
