Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1120)

Hello Everyone!

Riding out a fever, A sound sleep, Coding project productivity, A brief supply run & A chicken mystery!

Okay, I am more or less on time with my writing routine this evening so that is good. The sun seemed to set a bit earlier due to all the rainy weather... which left me thinking that I was way off track... but alas I was not.

Last night I wound up burning a fever for much of the evening... and it was not until the wee hours of the morning that it finally broke. Through it all I thankfully had very little tooth discomfort... and was even able to focus enough to work on a few coding projects.

Admittedly working on that stuff while in a fever state... was... well... feverish! I have no idea how I can still maintain so much 'hyper focusing' during such a state... but I achieved a bunch of my goals with the projects so I must have been doing something right!

By the time that it was almost dawn, I finally called it quits because being feverish and fatigued is one thing... but being feverish, fatigued and mildly delirious is something entirely different. Although I probably should have gone to sleep much earlier... every time that I tried to do so... I either could not fall asleep... or I woke right back up... with my tongue probing my teeth of its own accord.

In short I decided to 'put my time to good use' and by doing so... I was also able to distract myself from dwelling on the dental stuff overly much. I am just glad that when I finally fell asleep that I slept really well. Somehow I managed to not sleep the entire day away... and encourage myself to perpetuate the wonky sleep cycle that I have been on... so that was an achievement as well.

Honestly, it was tricky not to sleep the day away (because of how sleepy I still felt) but I did not want to miss my ride to get supplies like I did early last week. Now that I think of it, I have to wonder how long this dental infection has been going on... and if it has been playing a part in me feeling so 'off' lately... and wanting to sleep way more than I usually do.

Anyways, the rain moved in last night and all throughout the day it rained on and off but right when it was time to do the supply run... it cleared up for a bit. Since I had already committed myself to dealing with things in the rain if I had to... it was incredibly fortunate that I did not have to do so.

Even while I was at the little store doing my shopping I was in an incredibly foggy head space... and not even drinking one of those canned coffee drinks beforehand seemed to be enough to lift said fog. Doing the shopping was a bit of marathon endeavor in itself... because not only were most of the frozen goods and fruit sections empty... but most of the isles were strewn with flattened boxes, merchandise carts or some combination of those things.

Long story short there, I had to not only look for a bunch of 'alternatives' for the missing items... but I also had to backtrack all over the store to do so. On any 'normal' day none of that would have been a big deal for me... but today while still burning a mild fever and having to be in a social setting... it was 'challenging' to put it lightly!

On a different note, I should backtrack to just before I was going to leave and something that happened which I am still unsure what to think about. I was inside the cabin at the time... when I heard all this squawking outside... and since the dogs were out there... and at first I thought that it was one of them... I promptly exited the cabin to see what the heck was going on.

My three youngest dogs (which are all rather old dogs at this point) had Esmeralda (the chicken) pinned to the ground and were all taking turns 'nipping' (which is to say acting like they are going to bite or just nipping the feathers or skin) at her like they would with a puppy. They did not seem to harm her but they sure held her in place and gave her (and me) quite the fright. The crazy thing was that even after I broke things up... my boy dog still wanted to pursue the chicken... by slowly stalking it as it crossed the dog yard towards the coop.

To be clear here, all three of those dogs are trained to herd and hold chickens... and I have never had them display that level of seeming 'corrective aggression' towards a chicken before. I think they consider the birds to be some kind of weird 'puppies' (or just smaller creatures that are pets) and whatever happened today was because that particular hen did something to one (or all) of the dogs.

Given that she is kind of bossy, can be quite pushy... and often gets shunned for short periods by the other chickens... she tends to socialize with the dogs a good bit more than the other chickens do. She also tends to be super ornery towards them if she sees them with any of her eggs... or even thinks they have one of her eggs... so there is that factor as well. Which, now that I think of it... is probably what initiated the entire affair.

Alright, I have rambled on enough for one entry. I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice time.

It was another cloudy day!

As you can see she survived!

Toothaches are the worst, let me know if I can help with anything.

When we had chickens and the other dogs, they got along until one of the chickens would decide to run up and peck a dog, then the chase was on, but that is all it ever came down to.
