Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1123)

Hello Everyone!

Timely rest, Feeling fuzzy headed, Applying skills to hobbies, Rural wildlife & An early morning racket!

Alright, it is that time of the evening to do some writing... and I am even on time tonight to do so. Much like the last few days... I am unsure just how many words that I will have in me... but at least I am here and going to give it my best one way or another.

Last night I once again went to bed early and this time it was even earlier than the previous two nights... so it looks like I am finally getting my sleep cycle back on track. Somehow, I even managed to wake up before sunrise and enjoy some of that early morning 'stillness' that I am so fond of... but admittedly have not been getting enough of lately.

Although I was feeling a bit energetic it was still rather frigid outside... and I spent much of the day working on some coding projects. I gotta admit that while working on that stuff I noticed that my thinking is still quite murky... and at one point I even gave up on it altogether (for the time being) and took a brief nap hoping to 'start fresh' when I awoke again.

I did eventually work on those projects more later in the day... and the nap did clear my thinking up... yet overall I was not super productive. Not to get too into all that technology jazz... but basically I am at the point where I need take a step back from what I am working on... and reexamine my original goals.

Those kinds of projects are much like my more mundane (physical) ones where I begin with a single mission... then have to do a dozen (or more) other 'side quests' to either achieve (or just get close to achieving) my initial goal. I am slowly learning to use my 'real world' strategy of taking said 'step back' every now and then and 'checking in' on what my itinerary should be.

The thing is that most of the time I have no idea what the actual steps 'should' be... and sort of dive in head first. That is, until I figure out what steps that I actually need by trial and error... which is about the time that I start getting a clearer picture... and by then I usually begin devising steps.

I think that I should begin applying more of my project management skills to those projects... because although I have been doing it for fun as a new hobby... I enjoy it a heck of a lot and do not want to get burned out from it being too messy to manage. In other words I should treat it with more seriousness and apply better management techniques if I want to turn some of the 'rough stones' into gems... so to speak.

When it comes to replacing one addiction with another (replacing gaming with coding) it sure fit the bill and then some! In many ways it is kind of perfect because the 'universe' of it is so large that it offers endless exploration... and there are plenty of challenges, obstacles and downright 'adventures' to keep it all entertaining.

Anyways, super early in the morning today someone made a single gunshot not that all far off to the east of me... and even for the standards around here it was super frigging early in the morning for target shooting... which made me think it was someone hunting. In and of itself I would not say that it was all that weird... but then a minute or so later someone (much closer) fired off a whole bunch of shots... and although I do not have anything but gut feeling to go... it felt like it was a 'response' to that single shot that came from a different area altogether.

All of which is why I stay the heck out of the woods this time of year... and do not let any of the dogs run. As far as all that shooting this morning goes... I doubt that I am the only person around here that tends to want to leave the deer alone... mainly so that one day there will be enough of a population to make it worth hunting them to start with.

Honestly, the vehicles along the highway probably kill more deer than the hunters do throughout the course of the year. The other thing is that many of the properties around here have been sold as 'recreational' properties... and that is what folks use them for... so I am sure the deer population gets a good bit more pressure on it than in many areas.

None of the hunting or recreational property stuff 'bothers' me or anything... and there is not much that I could do about it even if it did... but I do wish folks had a keener understanding of the precarious balance with wildlife populations in rural areas. Especially so before they come bungling along into an area, have no understanding of the deer population... and wipe out all the prime (best) genetic stock.

On a different note, I got the water system brought back online after last night's freeze... and once again I did it right at sunset... which means that yup I procrastinated doing it until the last minute again. The hike itself was nice but I am glad that I had the foresight to wear my heavy jacket because it started to turn chilly just a few moments into the walk.

Well, I think that I am going to wrap this entry up and get on with the editing and posting portion of the evening. Those last two things have been rather tedious lately... but I am glad that I am pressing through the fog to maintain my routine.

I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice time.

There was a lot of pink in the sky at sunset!

No they can be built on. It has more to do with how they are zoned. They can be used for anything from recreation (hunting, camping or whatever) to agricultural purposes. There are a few variations in the zoning but most of the places fall into the 'anything goes' territory. The only big rule they have is no frigging single-wide or double-wide trailers which I am super thankful for.

Good, I was afraid they were trying to make your area off limits to building a house, that is the start of them taking land from the people and making them preserves.

LOL not here. They disbanded the local government in the 1950s.
