Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1162)

Hello Everyone!

A brief entry, The cold snap is almost over, A delayed sulfur dip treatment & The bug-proof cover seems to be working!

Alright, I am on time with the writing routine so that is nice. I am still more or less trying to get back to starting doing it a wee bit earlier... but lately I continue to fail at doing so right at sunset. I think that some of that is because of the few extra things that I have been doing (because of the prolonged cold snap) so we will see what happens once it is over.

Anyways, today I did not do much except remain indoors and stay out of the biting cold weather... which seems par for the course of late. As much as I do not mind being cooped up... this particular cold snap seems to just keep dragging on and on.

The only thing that it has majorly interfered with is giving that dog (with the dandruff mites) another treatment with the sulfur and lime dip. I just could not subject her to getting soaking wet (with the dip) and then having her remain outdoors in these conditions until it dried.

Tomorrow the weather is supposed to finally break and will be warming up considerably... so I am planning on giving her the treatment then if all goes well. Since I could not do the treatment... I have been using those permethrin ear drops on her just to help alleviate some of the itching... which works well even if it does not compare to what the dip does.

Ever since getting the bug-proof mattress cover installed yesterday... I gotta admit that her skin looks less irritated so perhaps that was a good idea... and has helped contain the bulk of the problem as far as the mites in the immediate environment goes. It is definitely still to early to tell... but I will assuredly know if it is making a difference after I do that next treatment with the dip.

Well, I am feeling way too moody to spend my time writing this evening so ta ta for now and I hope that everyone is doing well.

Yeah I got dog problems too. He has had lots of butt dandruff and we were dealing with the fleas for a bit too.

What I need to get is some cedar oil and douse out our area with sage and cedar smudge.

Nitenpyram works well for rapidly killing living fleas. Lufenuron works good to disrupt the flea life cycle.

I brushed dog daily with the flea brush. And keep killing all the fleas.

I keep it up I might solve this before having to use chemicals.

But yeah gotta get cedar oil and douse everything. Our bed. The truck.

That's why we use cedar shavings. Fleas hate it and it's toxic to them. They can't be around it...

So yeah also need to douse doggo... Lol fleas are going to hate that part...

Diatomaceous earth works super well for dusting everything also if you want another non-chemical solution in your arsenal. Just use the kind meant for livestock and poultry.

Actually for DE... I use the food grade stuff. And was thinking about that. They hate DE as it's like broken glass for them. And anything with an exoskeleton. All insects hate it.

I actually thought about that a while back and seriously I can't believe that I forgot about that option. Excellent idea and I think I'm definitely going to use that.

Yeah I was going to mention the food grade stuff but a few years ago I found the livestock kind and it was a bit cheaper. I have used both and they work the same.

Ive always paid extra for the food grade stuff. Seriously. It's what pennies more really?

But there's little to no actual difference I'm sure.

We haven't had a cold snap this bad in a really long time. Where I'm at, we usually don't get this kind of weather until sometime in February. This has been crazy, and I am so ready for the warmup! We're supposed to be back up into the 50s next week here in Northeast Arkansas.

Yeah, I am in the southeast and this has been way outside the norm. Gonna hit 52 tomorrow though so that will be a nice change. Been looking at pictures further north in the southeast and some from the northeast as well and whoa it looks bad. Gonna be so much flooding when the melting starts.

Ya'll stay safe!

Hopefully the cold will stop soon.
Are the dogs in your posts the same dogs from the videos?
It has been quite nice getting to see what it looks like around there 😁 enjoying it.

Yeah, @hellsveiah it is finally warming up today!
Yep, they are the same dogs just older now.
The location (land/property) is not the same as the one I am at now.
I am happy that you are enjoying it! 🤠

That's great! Warm weather is just better. Easier to get things done.

Glad to hear that the cold weather will be lightening up soon. It really can be a bummer to be indoors so long but, it is just part of the cycle of nature and probably the cold is lessening the ticks and other hitchhiking critters outdoors.

Yep, I am used to the cycle and kind of like the winter because of it but this last cold snap just would not end. Well, until today but whoa it was a weird one having lasted that long in this region.
