Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1169)

Hello Everyone!

Sticking to routines, The weather takes a dive, Lots of woodland hiking & Bagging up the garbage!

Alright, I am starting the writing routine on time today... and you can probably skip the rest of this paragraph given that I have written something similar to it for several weeks on end now. I have yet to find a better way to begin these entries... but perhaps I will eventually start them off with something more exciting than remarking upon the status of my writing routine!

The weather took a dive today and the wind picked up and good bit... which made it feel way colder than it really was outside. At least I made good use of the few days of fair weather that we had... so I guess that is something.

I once again had a heck of a time falling asleep last night... and it was super late before I could actually drift off all the way. As much as I would like to think that it was the full moon keeping me awake... I know that it is really the stress that I have been feeling... combined with the constant undercurrent of uncertainty that my life has had over the previous year.

Anyways, I still wound up getting up rather early this morning... and although I did not do much in the way of my Hive engagement routine... I did read some posts and tried to find things to comment on. Without finding much to engage with... I changed gears and decided to swap out the dog bedding... and took the old bedding outside where I hung it up... and sprayed it down with one of the high pressure nozzles to get it clean.

After all that jazz, I decided to go on a hike in the woods... and spent the bulk of my morning wandering around taking in the scenery. There really was not much to see on the hike... and I was really surprised at how little wildlife activity that there was... but I guess that has something to do with all the bad weather we have been having.

The hike really wiped me out and afterwards I zoned out inside the cabin for a while before taking a much needed nap. Considering that most of the hiking that I did was in rough terrain... it is no wonder that it left me feeling worn out... but also I am not in the best shape... and that 'caloric deficit' is assuredly playing a big part in it all to boot.

I guess that I slept for two or three hours before rousing myself... and getting bundled up in some warm clothes again before heading back outdoors. After doing some routine chores I cleaned out the refrigerator... and whoa was it quite bare once I stuffed all the various empty containers into a dog food bag... and used a grocery bag to tie it shut.

Since the big garbage can (used for the roadside pickup) was not quite full... I drug it around the property to some of the piles of other people's junk... and after bagging it up I shoved it into the garbage can as well. Although it made the garbage can quite heavy (and full) I did not mind the arduous task of lugging it out to the road... because whoa I really cannot stand the sight of junk laying about.

Well, that is all for this entry. I hope that folks are doing well... or well enough. Ta ta for now.

Heya!
Not sure if this is useful... but, in regards to needing more calories...(not sure if you're already doing this though) back in my early twenties, we would always keep a huge jar of peanut butter around and add it to everything (even rice, which is absolutely horrible, by the way) I still don't like peanut butter.... but it did keep is going and added some much needed calories when we couldn't manage a proper meal 😅

Haha! Yeah, I always keep a few jars of peanut butter on hand for that. The only downside to it is that peanuts get used as a rotation crop here to 'clean up' the soil which results in them absorbing a lot of toxins. The peanut butter sure works but after a while it leaves me feeling pretty toxified. I do it anyway when need be (like now) but whoa I do not enjoy it. I do like it in rice though as well as mixed in with potatoes. 🤠

Aww, guess I couldn't really help then. 🥺 That's pretty interesting actually, didn't know you could or have to clean up soil. There you go, teaching me stuff again. 😁🏹
Peanut butter in potatoes sounds really strange, but I can see how it'll help you keep going!
Haha wish sci-fi teleporter thingies were real. I'd totally send you snacks! (For what it's worth) 🔫🏹👻

The engagement helps so for what it is worth you did help. Yeah, I think it is because of all the mono-cropping that is done like when growing corn and such with all the pesticides, herbicides and fungicides that get used.

Last night I fried potatoes and apples with peanut butter which is one of my defacto foods when things get slim. It was my last apple but hopefully I can get out to a store soon and restock. Only shopping once a month is awesome but when things get slim towards the end they get very slim!

A teleporter sure would be nice! I wonder how far away having such contraptions really is at the pace technology is advancing! I would settle for a Star Trek style food replicator also! 🏹🤠👻🔫

Haha good enough for now I guess. Sometimes I forget engagement also pays.

Except for the peanut butter, fried apples and potatoes sounds pretty good 😅
Thought things running out around the last week (okay.... halfway through the month at times) was mostly a South African problem. Get it though...I have resorted to trying to grow some vegetables lately.

I think it'll be a while still unfortunately! And... don't judge too much.... but I haven't actually watched Star Trek yet (Shame on me, I know) 👻

Best of luck with growing vegetables. I always fail at the vegetable growing and it seems like the only thing that ever grows for me is potatoes so I stick with them.

Haha! No Star Trek! Hard to believe but okay and of course no judgement. There are so many different ones from the various television shows to movies that all tie together that it makes for quite the story. Fundamentally though it is pretty epic stuff given that the bulk of it (as far as the older shows go) is all about space exploration and what it takes to work together as a team regardless of species and/or personalities.

Haha i have the same issue, can only grow one thing 🙈 and you can't even eat it.

Okay... well I watched the newish Star Trek movie but I'm not sure that really counts as having watched Star Trek!

.... not sure if this comment will even send. Crazy storm has caused yet another power out, so the WiFi is gone.

Growing, but slow, no fruit. The spinach and lettuce didn't make it 🫥

I like your "sticktoittiveness" when it comes to your writing routine, since I've pretty much ditched mine for the time being. I wondered; do you always publish your posts around the same time of day? I used to try to do that until classes intervened.

Glad you like it! Yeah, I really like the routine and sticking to it. Yes, I do my best to post within the same loose timeframe each evening. With both the writing and posting portion I try to keep it all within a one hour window for the start time.
