Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1188)

Hello Everyone!

At least my downward spiral is counterclockwise, Ending the anaerobic composting experiment & Making some small effort to salvage my mind!

Alright, I am on time with my writing routine... but once again I do not feel like writing anything at all. The only reason that I am even attempting it is... because I need some semblance of routine to keep me on an even keel.

Last night it took me for fucking ever to fall asleep... but once I did I at least slept rather soundly. I had some rather bizarre dreams along the way... but thankfully they faded from memory rather quickly once I was up and about for the day.

Since I only slept in a few hours after sunrise you would think that I would have dove into my usual Hive engagement routine... but instead I could not muster any interest in doing so. Instead I spent much of the morning reading the 'news' and scrolling through a bunch of lame shit on a web2 platform (looking for leads for a new place) which yeah was about as exciting as it sounds.

Eventually I got fed up with pretty much everything to do with the computer... and got outdoors in an effort to break free of some of the depression that has been gripping my mind a little more each day. Honestly, I wanted to just go back to sleep... but figured fuck it because it is not like that particular strategy had worked out well on the previous days that I did it.

Anyways, around three years ago (when I first began developing the shelter site) I began a humanure experiment with some buckets stored inside a tent. Basically I just kept filling buckets with poop, dirt, biochar and ashes then sealed them with a lid... and stored them in a tent so that I could see how well anaerobic composting would work with human waste. As a side note I placed the tent where it was located to keep predators away from the chicken coop... but that is neither here nor there but worth mentioning.

The tent was rather dry rotted at this stage of things (even in the shade) so I unceremoniously cut the back of it open... and began the slow process of lugging one bucket after another to that 'bushcraft' compost enclosure that I made a few years ago. The enclosure itself did what I thought that it would... and is covered in turkey tail mushrooms which is kind of cool but irrelevant to the compost experiment.

When I opened the first bucket (to dump it in the enclosure) I really had no idea what to expect. I was quite surprised to find that not only did it not stink... but it had decomposed into some rather nice looking 'loamy' soil that looked almost as dark as that other compost experiment that I remarked upon a few weeks back.

All total I had twenty-two buckets sequestered away in the tent... and whoa was it a process to get them all moved, emptied and then washed out afterwards. I also broke the tent down and shoved it inside a big garbage bag... so that I can send it out in the trash this week... which seemed like the best thing to do with it given its highly deteriorated condition.

After all that jazz I collected a bunch of firewood, started a nice fire and put some music on before diving into doing all my usual routine chores. I dunno if any of it did jackshit to improve my overall mood... but at least I tried.

Well, on that note I am going to call this entry good enough (whatever the hell that means) and get on with my evening. It is worth noting that my compromise on the writing (for now) is to go back to just posting to my blog... instead of in the Homesteading Community... because alas I do not need the mental crud that comes along with doing so... and need to just revert back to my old way of doing things.

I hope that everyone is doing well or something. Ta ta for now.

Glad to read that the anerobic method of humanmanure composting worked out well for you! Good to know! Might be pooping in buckets pretty soon here. The goal is to do a double compartment composting toilet in the end.
