Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1228)

Hello Everyone!

That was quite the storm system, Getting an address, Window shopping sheds & Water harvesting potential!

Alright, I am running slightly behind schedule (by a mere fourteen minutes) this evening... but alas here I am! If I had not kept procrastinating my late day chores... until well after the sun had mostly disappeared over the horizon... I would have undoubtedly been on time with my writing routine.

I gotta admit that last night was a rather large blur to me... but eventually (in the wee hours of the morning) I managed to drift off to sleep. Although, a big part of that was the intense storm that rolled through... some of it was also due to plenty of nervous energy over the whole moving thing.

Somehow though, I managed to wake up at a decent hour today... and whoa it was still raining... and so darkly overcast... that it might of well had still been storming like it was before... especially given that the wind had taken on quite the chill. By no means was it 'inviting weather' to do any work outdoors... and I settled into my Hive engagement routine in short order.

I am unsure what time that it all happened this morning... but I heard back from that addressing service... and got the address assigned in a single, rapid and friendly phone conversation. Just getting that done felt like a tremendous achievement... but the process was so painless (and cost nothing) to boot... which made it quite enjoyable... plus it is also gives me a valid address for postal service.

Being able to have things delivered to the site is a big game changer... and although I will probably need to talk to the post office (so they can mark where to install a mailbox) that is not a big deal. Also, the way that the electric service (for new service) works... having the address (with the validation document) ensures that I can start the ball rolling with it.

I also looked into some small fully insulated and somewhat 'affordable' sheds... that get built on site, have metal roofing... and can come pre-wired for electricity... including overhead lights. All in all the models (different size buildings) that the builder makes all seem pretty nice... and they had a lot of good reviews which is always nice to see.

Of all my options with storage, I think that something small and simple might work best... and doing so might make it where I can squeeze two buildings into the place that I was looking at putting a single building. Aside from being able to keep my work and domestic gear separate (and maybe using one shed to camp in during intense weather events) I am more interested in the water harvesting potential coming off the two roofs.

Given that the buildings would be located at the top of the slope (and adding gutters to the roofs would be easy) I could then use the highest point on the property to store water at for a gravity-fed system. One way or another, I think that it is an excellent opportunity to immediately have water available onsite... and I have most of the supplies that I would need for such a system.

Anyways, sometime this afternoon I finally hiked over to where that tree has been laying across the road (for a few months now I think) and got it moved out of the way. It only took using a meter long prybar and an equally long piece of thick walled metal iron pipe... to shuffle the logs around and get them to break free of the main trunk on their own.

That whole endeavor was a bit intense... but with the aid of a few of the shorter and smaller logs from the trees... I was able to slide the larger logs around rather easily as well as gain leverage on them in the first place. It is kind of funny because it only took me maybe ten minutes to complete the entire task... and during it I was like: Yup this is exactly how you pictured doing it for weeks now!

Aside from all that jazz, the day was a slow one... but I did get some of the laundry (that got rained on) flipped over so the opposite side can get washed. I also did some other smaller piddly tasks (like finally fixing the band on my corded USB headlamp) but mainly I just hung out indoors hoping that the weather would clear up.

Okay, I think that is all the words that I have in me for this entry. I hope that everyone is doing well and decides to donate to me for my upcoming birthday and of course to help with moving expenses and some of the gear that I need for the next adventure.

I like your storage, shelter, water collection-in one idea.
Sounds like you had a pretty good day, overall.

Step one, get an address, completed, this makes me feel a little better.

This morning Donny said there was a stretch of rain from Cape Canaveral all the way up the east coast to Canada, no breaks in it. about an hour ago we got a little sprinkle.

The insulated sheds, wired for electricity, sounds like a good thing for you to stay in until you can get better housing.

Once you get there maybe you will have a nice neighbor with a tractor and they will help you get some of the land cleared, I am just putting that out there for the universe to pick up on.
