Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 416)

Hello Everyone!

Apocalyptic Homesteading Day 416!

More Hiking Less Mental Chatter, Rusty Treasures, There Be Vermin & Shuffling The Good Ole Trusty NFT Collection

The day was once again a chilly one but thankfully the wind was not all that fierce and I was able to once again spend much of my time outdoors. I mainly just focused on doing some chores around the shelter site in an effort to reboot the kind of 'daily routine' that I fell out of some months back. Although I briefly considered having a fire to warm myself near I went on several short hikes instead and was sure to look at the rest of the roads to make sure they were clear of debris from that recent storm. Along the way I noticed several more downed pine trees but thankfully none of them had fallen onto any of the roads. Antother thing that I noticed is that a lot of the oak trees (especially the scrub oaks) had shed a heck of a lot of dead branches and many of the areas that I could once easily hike in are now inaccesible because of all the branches. I doubt that I will clean up most of them but just for fire safety reasons I might spend some time cleaning up what I can from around the shelter site.

Anyway, just walking around was pretty nice and at this point I figure that anything that gets me away from the computer is undoubtedly good for me even if I am not being super productive in the process. During my last hike I even visited one of the low-lying areas which is basically a big marsh for much of the year but does dry out rather quickly when there is not much rain. While I was hiking around it I noticed a large metal pipe that I have probably walked right next to a few dozen times now and never really noticed given that it is quite rusty and looks a lot like a fallen tree branch. Much of the pipe looks to be intact (even though it is rusty and has a large bend in it) and although I did not try to pull it up I did kick it a few times and it did not budge so I am assuming that there is a lot more of it buried under the ground. I definitly made a mental note of it and am going to try to get back over there with some tools and see if I can unearth the rest of it as well as scour the area for any other metal objects.

Since most of the vegeattion has died back for the winter it makes seeing stuff like that pipe a bit easier so my hike turned into a bit of a scavenger hunt and not all that far away from the pipe I found what looks like part of an old plough or some other farming implement. Not that it would be all that useful around here given the crappy soil and clay but I may wind up fashioning a handle for it and making a sort of hoe or a sort of 'long handled plough' out of it. For now I tossed it in the shop tent along with all the other odds and ends that have accumulated in there.

As a side note I have yet to finish cleaning that tent out and reorganizing stuff so that it is actually usable again but I am sure that I will get fed up with it eventually and tackle that task. The rats have been making a mess in there so sometime before the winter is over I am going to clear some stuff out of the way and let the dogs loose in there to do some vermin control. There are a few other places that need the same treatment so best to do it sooner than later given how fast they tend to breed. There has also been one (or more) of them frequenting the solar shack at night and although the dogs keep going in there to try and catch it I have yet to see them do it which is probably because it is climbing up on the shelving where they cannot get to it. Although I did have a small amount of burnables and recyclables in there I think the vermin like the the heat from the batteries but I could be wrong about that.

On a different note, I once again tackled the task of sorting through my collection of eXode NFT(s) and continued the process of normalizing the prices of them. Since I have several thousand of them you can imagine what a daunting task that is but I am slowly chipping away at it and only have the 'Colony' group left to sort through. It is not that doing so is all that difficult but it sure amounts to a heck of a lot of clicking and some occasional 'head scratching' over what a reasonable price is for the various cards.

It really is one of those things that I put off doing for far too long and when the price of HIVE went from around ten to twenty cents (per unit) to staying up above a dollar fifty (USD) I should have immediatly adjusted the prices accordingly but did not because mainly I did not want to appear greedy and secondly I was unsure if the price was going to remain high. In short a heck of a lot of NFT(s) got bought up 'dirt cheap' because of that which is fine and dandy because I have pretty much always just wanted to see the market keep moving along and not stall out. This is in no way schilling the game but to put it bluntly it was by far the best investment that I have ever made even if it is the only such investment that I have ever made aside from buying myself tools and accessories to do labor with.

Well, I think that is enough writing for one day and I am once again going to be editing and posting this whilst feeling utterly fatigued which is never all that fun. I sincerely hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice day/night.
