Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 427)

Hello Everyone!

Apocalyptic Homesteading Day 427!

A big storm rolls in, A long hike, So many mushrooms & Lots of fallen pines!

Today started off pretty wacky because I failed to fall asleep until almost four o'clock in the morning and then found myself wide awake again by nine. There was a big storm happening and since I was not going to be doing anything outdoors I should have just gone back to sleep but I remained awake instead. The storm itself was pretty intense as far as rain and wind goes but thankfully there was not any thunder to frighten the dogs. The biggest 'calamity' that it caused was blowing the vinyl door of the solar shack inwards and a bunch of rain getting in the entrance of it. Thankfully all those coats of paint protect the floor quite well and the door stopped the rain from getting to the tools.

Anyway, ever since I began doing the writing in the early evening a few weeks ago my sleep cycle has been pretty skewed. I am beginning to think that maybe doing so is part of why my sleep cycle is so out of whack. It takes up most of my evening to get it done and more often than not I am struggling with fatigue the entire time and by the time that I get to the editing I am totally fed up with it. I think that this is why I settled on writing about my previous day's adventures in the mornings before and why I will more than likely return to doing the same again.

Once the big storm blew over the sun actually came out and since I was feeling way too cooped up I decided to go for a hike. During the hike I looked at that watering hole on the hill that I started last week but there was no water in it. I guess that I will need to clear out the shallow gulch above it and try to get more runoff flowing down it if that is ever going to work out the way that I hope that it will in order to hold some water. I also hiked to the meadow and whoa there is a lot of water in it and from the looks of it we must have gotten at least a few inches of rain during the storm.

While I was hiking around I saw a bunch of mushrooms popping up all over the place and even found a bunch of jelly roll ones. I had seen them before around here but none as large as the ones that I saw today so I guess the cooler temperatures may have something to do with that. There were also some large off-white colored mushrooms and some kind of puffballs that I had not seen before. Overall, I was surprised to see so many mushrooms in the winter but with the way the weather has been flip-flopping between super warm and super cold I guess it kind of makes sense.

On a different note, I did not see any more fallen pine trees in the roads so that is good. I am sure that with how hard the wind was blowing that more of the standing dead ones have fallen in the woods. Since it was still blowing moderately hard while I was hiking I did not venture too far off the beaten path to look but I will more than likely do that over the coming days. The pine forest closest to the shelter site is littered with them and one way or another I am going to need to clean them up before the snake season arrives. Although the clean up part will be quite the chore itself... what to do with it all afterwards is the really daunting part given how most of it is too rotten to burn and since its pine it makes for some really useless compost.

Alright I guess that I am just going to keep this one short and sweet. I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice day/night.
