Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 662)

Hello Everyone!

Stormy weather, More swampy research, Floods are dodgy, Back to the houseboat idea & A land's resources are important!

I awoke a few minutes after sunrise this morning and have been in slow motion ever since... regardless of how much espresso that I seem to drink. Being in a mild brain fog is rather befitting of the weather so overall it 'fits' and I am sure that I will shake it off eventually.

This morning I once again found myself looking at all too many maps, reading entirely too much about various places (and their surrounding environs) and have generally been scouring for facts about that swampy place that I mentioned in yesterday's entry. That said, I have yet to do an actual 'deep dive' into the place with my 'land research checklist' but I am slowly inching towards it!

There is assuredly a lot that is appealing about living on a river and the slow life that would assuredly entail. That said, there are a lot of factors to it all and much to consider. Overall I should treat it with the same respect that I have my decision-making about moving into wildfire country... because the environments themselves are much dodgier than what I prefer!

Alright, I never wrote anything else today and it is already sunset so I better see what else I can spell out before the fatigue catches up to me. Even though it rained a lot today I did manage to get some stuff done and yeah I am feeling pretty wiped out from it all at this point.

For the most part I spent the rainy portions of the day doing more land research which basically just amounted to looking at various properties located in that swampy area along that river. I even looked into the last major flood that was there and found out its height (depth) was roughly five point three meters which yeah is quite the flood!

From what I can tell that kind of flooding does not occur all that often but whoa it only takes one flood like that to ruin everything. The more I look into that area the more that I am inclined to build some sort of houseboat like I mentioned in my previous entry but we will see how all that works out.

Of course I could just plan on building really high off the ground but that is rather cost prohibitive and I am sure it would require quite a lot in just the permitting and inspection fees. If it were in a more 'off-grid friendly' state I feel confident that doing such a project would be rather cheap and straight forward... but alas that just is not the case.

On a different note, every time that I start looking at a property to move to I keep eyeing it for what resources it has available and I am quickly realizing a lot of places do not have much to offer. Sure there are often slash pines and an assortment of other trash timber but there is no good timber stands, rocks or pretty much anything else that is useful on many of the 'swampy area' properties I have been looking at.

It is not exactly that lacking such resources is a deal breaker but having materials to work with sure helps a lot when starting off at a new place. I guess that the best that I can hope for in those swampy places is finding a big stand of bamboo or if I am really lucky some eastern cedars.

Anyway, I am definitely not set on moving back to the swamp or anything but like I said before it is one of the options that I am pursuing. Looking into all my options thoroughly seems to be the name of the game at the moment... so I keep doing it. In short, having a variety of options is good as long as I am willing to sort through them all!

Well, it is getting late and I better call this entry good enough and get on with the editing and posting. I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice day/night.
