Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 675)

Hello Everyone!

Another chilly morning, More leaves dropping, Eyeing the winter gear, Sewing goals & Its almost boot repair time!

I somehow managed to wake up rather early today even though I was once again up sort of late last night. Upon going outside I discovered that there is quite the chill to the air and although it feels like the perfect sleeping weather... I decided to stay up, get some espresso brewed and try to get some writing done instead.

So far the weather has still been remaining rather fair (meaning no storms have been blowing in) but both yesterday and today there is a high wind advisory. It never amounted to much yesterday (besides there being a few errant gusts) but today it is blowing rather hard and the stronger gusts seem to be occurring rather frequently.

With all the wind the leaves have started to really drop from some of the hardwoods and now there are a lot more leaves in the dog yard (and around the shelter site in general) that need to be raked up. By the end of the day today I am sure there will be even more of them because the wind is supposed to blow like this for the remainder of the day.

In other news I awoke to my leg feeling a good bit better so I think that I am going to continue delaying taking any anti-inflammatories for now. Hopefully it continues to mend itself like it has been and I can avoid the medication altogether but since that has never actually worked in the past... I have my reservations in regards to it working this time.

Basically when that muscle is inflamed it never seems to heal and given that even the most non-productive day for me still entails a good bit of physical movement and exertion just doing my daily routines... I cannot quite 'do nothing' which is what it takes for the inflammation to go down on its own. Nor can I sleep as much as it would take to get my body's own anti-inflammatories to do the trick.

Heck even just sitting still seems to agitate it and apparently it is only while laying down that I can tell a real difference in the discomfort being alleviated. Even then it depends on how I position my leg and I keep finding myself sprawling out in one position or another that takes up way more of the bed than I usually do while sleeping.

Alright, the sun is currently setting and I am settling into my nightly routine of writing and this time I am doing so without having a nightly espresso... so we will see how that works out. It is not that I am trying to break the habit (at the moment) but I had some this afternoon and am still feeling rather jazzed up from it.

I once again stayed off my leg the best that I could for most of the day and although I can still notice the discomfort when walking on a slope... it does seem to be healing so that is good. Thankfully this entire time that it has been inflamed it has not reached the 'intense pain' point so perhaps I caught it in time before I could injure it further.

On a different note the wind never got quite as strong as it was predicted to but it did gust on and off for much of the day and brought down even more leaves like I thought that it would. Mainly it looks like it is mostly scrub oak leaves that are already falling and (from what I can tell) they are dropping from primarily the larger trees at the moment.

With all the seasonal changes occurring I am rather excited because the days and nights are growing much cooler, there is a crispness to the air that I enjoy and far less bugs than there has been all summer! Overall it is a pleasant time of year even though I am sure that I will eventually begin complaining about how such 'transitional times' are annoying due to how the temperature varies so widely each day.

Seriously though, I have been eyeing my cold weather gear and taking stock at how well I am setup in case I wind up needing it soon. I have yet to reach the point of getting my chapstick out of storage but I may well do that if these chilly nights keep occurring like they have been.

While I am thinking about it I best stock up on the stuff soon just in case! Chapstick (or even lip balm) is just one of those items that makes the cold weather bearable. With how 'hit or miss' the supply-chain has been anything like that goes immediately into my mental list of things to acquire long before the winter actually arrives!

The other thing that I keep thinking about is needing to sew/mend a bunch of clothes and especially get a bunch of buttons re-attached on some of it. Thankfully I do not have anything that needs major attention (in regards to sewing) but I do have to repair my Muck boots soon because the soles are starting to come lose around the edges.

To be clear here I worked those boots really hard and definitely got my investment back out of them and the only reason the soles are in the shape they are in is from when I was installing the dog yard here and I abused them a bit. What happened was I kept using my feet to stomp the soil around the bottom of the fencing where it sits in a trench to help compact it and it was a 'snug fit' to say the least!

Basically, the boot kept getting caught between the fencing and the edge of the trench as I was back-filling soil and stomping it down towards the bottom of the trench the best that I could. It is worth noting that after the boots got snagged enough times (and I noticed the potential for severe damage) I switched to using the tamp end of my rock bar instead... like I should have done from the start!

Supposedly this adhesive called 'barge cement' seems to be the go-to thing most folks seem to recommend for repairing those kinds of boots so I ordered some and am looking forward to seeing how well it does. The wild thing is that the boots are not even leaking or anything and have yet to lose their overall integrity but I sure would not want to try working in them the way they are now!

Well, I have some other things to do this evening before I grow too much sleepier so I am going to call this entry good enough and get on with the editing and posting portion of things. I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice day/night.

None of the pictures that I took today came out well so here is one of the blue sky from a few days ago!

There's something satisfying about keeping things in order. Whether it's organizing your home, your desk, or your schedule, there's a certain joy that comes with knowing that everything is in its place.

Some people live for the thrill of the fix. They love taking something that's broken and fixing it so that it works again. There's a sense of accomplishment that comes with taking something that was once broken and making it whole again.

For others, the joy comes from the prevention of things going wrong in the first place. They take pride in keeping things running smoothly and efficiently. There's a satisfaction that comes with knowing that you've averted a disaster before it had a chance to happen.

No matter what it is that you take joy in, there's no doubt that keeping things in order can be a rewarding experience.

You are really doing your best @jacobpeacock . Stay safe.
