I started with just the Steemit new account stake, and everything I have now was earned on the platform itself. It is possible, with years of efforts and content, to build from nothing. I did have the advantage of the fork to consolidate into HIVE, but that was a big gamble. There was no guarantee this system would succeed the way it did. Crypto forks rarely work out like ours did.

It was a bit of a gamble, one that we all took. However, we knew it would work out since the major players in the community were all moving.
Thanks for your comment. It is good to know there are people who built their account simply by putting their head down and getting busy. That is my experience also.
