This is my entry for Tyger's Electric Dreams Writing Contest 2.0

I shouldn't have taken that damn box.

I found myself sitting in a bar rag. Unfortunately for me, the hygiene standards of the establishment were shining by their absence. All sorts of undesirables beens walked in and perfumed the barely breathable atmosphere with their homeless scent.

I tried to drown my bad decisions in a jar of what seemed to me to be a stale alcoholic beverage made with who knows what, but it was all there was. I didn't even dare to drink the earth-colored liquid they served for water.

This was a primitive world, on the verge of succumbing to a karmic threat that dated back thousands of years and thanks to my greed I was part of it. It was not all bad, there was no environmental pollution, that was for sure. You could breathe pure air and wherever you looked, there were always large green expanses.

A community without technology, totally agricultural, but surrounded by magic. Real magic, even when there were no hospitals or comprehensive diagnostic centers, there were some people capable of repairing serious wounds, burns, broken arms and make them as good as new with just a few words in tongues.

Totally unbelievable.

I passed another bitter gulp of that drink down my throat and again cursed having taken that box. I remembered it like it was yesterday; as usual, I was doing my thing, illegally selling everyday items on the street. I didn't mind doing it, everyone was doing it, why not me? In particular, I had a collection of edible underwear that sold like hotcakes.

But that miserable day, that guy appeared, dropping right under my nose, totally dead, and in his hands was a mysterious box covered in symbols, very flashy indeed. I was sure I could get about $20,000 for it.

My mind flew and my mouth watered. The man was already dead, he wasn't going to do anything with it anymore. It would be a waste to leave it in the hands of any crook.

I glanced around to see if there were any witnesses to what had happened, but it was obvious that this big city didn't give a damn what happened to strangers. Without making much of a move, I reached over, grabbed the box and immediately picked up my booth and vanished from the site.

Unfortunately, the box started screeching and for some reason its symbols lit up. Everything happened very fast, without realizing it, as I was running away, I suddenly found myself in a totally different place, the concrete jungle where I used to live had turned into a real jungle, with dirt, exotic plants and streams. I wanted to go back the way I came, but I felt a loud bang on my head and everything went dark. To my bad luck, I also lost the box.

Here I am, according to the high priestess magician of the society where I was, by the work of destiny, I end up being one of the chosen ones to fight the evil that has recently awakened, after having slept for centuries, whose only intention is to destroy everything around us.

The great dark wizard. A power-hungry madman and obviously a sociopath who wishes to eliminate everyone, including the world where he lives and I wonder: where will he go to live after he destroys everything?

Undoubtedly he was not alone, there was a horde of creatures on his side, monstrous humanoid beings, tall as oaks and hard as stone, with large fangs, skilled in the use of axes and swords, and to top it off, experts in wiping out everything that crossed their path.

On the other hand, the great priestess mage was a beautiful woman, tall and slender, her long red hair already showed some gray hair. She had a very penetrating gaze, but I was sure she had a screw loose. Never in my life had I ever held a sword in my hands and I totally lack combative skills, the best I know how to do is run away. How the hell was I going to be one of the chosen ones?

While I was still dealing with my strange bitter drink, the other four chosen ones enter the bar; the barbarian is the first, a tall, burly man with a broad chin, makes me assume he is the alpha of the group, the leader; he carries a heavy sword hanging from his back, he wears two pieces of leather in the form of a shirt and pants. Behind him comes the apprentice sorceress, a humble young woman, a bit introverted for my tastes, wearing a dress that covers her feet and at her side, jealously clutched, her saddlebag filled with who knows what potions, amulets and gadgets.

Behind them, they are followed by the archer, half elf, half villager, an outcast for both clans. His white hair is braided behind his back, highlighting his pointed ears. Always aware of everything around him, ready to take his bow and shoot one of his accurate arrows. Next to the latter comes the dwarf, not to be underestimated for his stature, he is capable of lifting a pair of men twice his size and splitting them in two with his great hammer.

Galavant is the first to join me, sitting down opposite me. His great stature and weight make the wooden chair creak. To his left, he is accompanied by Mariam, who delicately signals the bartender to order four drinks.

Almost imperceptibly sits to my left, William, who watches me with great determination, as if looking to find out what the great magician saw in me. Roughly to my right, with a jump, sits Torin, the dwarf warrior, suddenly dropping his great hammer to make himself noticed.

"So you are the fifth chosen one to come from other lands," blurts out the barbarian.

Everyone stands expectantly, waiting for my answer. However, I rearrange myself in my seat and nod my head.

"So it would seem," I reply and take another sip of my disgusting drink.

I see disapproval in their looks. But in reality, I care little for their opinions. I only hope I can find a way back to my world, before I perish in this one.

"We have trained most of our lives for this moment," haughtily, the barbarian exclaims after tossing his jar onto the table.

"We are all willing to give our lives for the mission," he adds.

I glance at the dwarf and he nods with his chest puffed out; I smile at him and raise my drink to celebrate the affirmation and cover my mouth and take the opportunity to look to my left; Will doesn't comment but I see he bites his lower lip, meanwhile I discreetly throw a furtive glance towards Mariam, her gaze lost, down to her right and her hands unconsciously ruffle her dress.

"I'm sure you're a great warrior where you come from," Torin spits giving me a shove that almost knocks me out of my chair, he finishes his drink and asks the bartender for a new one.

I finish my drink and glance at them all.

"Actually, I was a clothing salesman."

Galavant laughs at the top of his lungs, Mariam hides her face behind her hands and Will leaves the table without a word. Torin hasn't understood what happened as he keeps trying to get the bartender's attention for a new drink.

I leave without a word

I find myself walking crestfallen, lost among the streets of the village, kicking some pebbles, when suddenly behind a corner, the high priestess mage appears. I force a smile and greet her "Good afternoon!", she doesn't say anything.

Between her hands something glares at me. It's the damn box. My eyes widen and my fake smile transforms into a real one. I can't help but hide my excitement to be back in my world.

She leaves it in my hands after saying "You are free to do as you please" and walks away.

A new opportunity presents itself before me, it is clear that I have no idea how to use the box, but I am sure that after a couple of attempts I could return to my world and leave as soon as possible from the apocalypse that is about to happen.

I forget for a moment all about the theme of the advent of the dark wizard and his terrible decision to end everything and concentrate on inquiring about the workings of the box as soon as possible, when suddenly a small girl approaches me.

She has a thin rope tied around her waist and this in turn extends to the neck of a small goat, a pygmy goat to be precise; my attention is fixed on the little animal, ruminating on a piece of cloth, indifferent to what is happening around her, perhaps it is a piece of the skirt that dresses the girl, even so she continues to enjoy it.

The little brat takes out of a bag, which she carries at her side, a rag doll and offers it to me.

"My mom told me that you are the fifth chosen one and that you come from far, far away."

I keep looking at her hand outstretched towards me, with the rag doll in it.

"For sure, you miss your family a lot and they miss you too", the little girl says sniffling and adds "that's why I want you to have Wanda, to keep you company."

I keep my mouth open without saying anything and unconsciously my hand reaches out, she places her doll inside mine and closes my fingers over it.

The little goat nibbles her skirt again and she giggles and warns her to stop as her mother will scold them both; she remembers to feed the little animal and leaves but not before giving me a hug.

Her flirtatious and amused laughter is engraved in my mind.

My eyes follow them until they disappear behind a corner in the distance. The doll is still clinging to my hand.

In my world, I'm just another one of the bunch, just another parasite of society. I remember that I don't have a steady job and that I'm about to be kicked out of my apartment.

I ran desperately through the battlefield, the mangled bodies of the monsters were scattered everywhere, the smoke barely let me breathe, I just prayed to find the chosen ones alive.

Fortunately, the enemies did not reach the village, the chosen ones strongly fought the horde of monsters.

After half an hour of jumping over mountains of monster corpses, I found Mariam, exhausted but still fighting, performing healing spells on William and Torin. From the state of their wounds, it was probably going to take her longer than I thought.

She glances at me, surprised. I ask her where Galavant is and she tells me that he has decided to face the dark mage alone and points me with her gaze to where the fight is happening.

I toss her a bottle of mineral water and comment.

"That's what we call in my world, water," I wink at her and continue on my journey.

I follow a path full of large rocks, sneak between them and manage to catch a glimpse of both warriors fighting with swords. For some reason, the dark mage has decided to test his expertise with the sword.

But it is evident that he does not fight fairly, he throws rocks with his magic power on Galavant, who evades the ones he can or deflects them with his sword. Galavant is exhausted but still standing.

I approach cautiously, I think Galavant has him beat, but suddenly the dark mage gets annoyed and levitates Galavant's body, folds his arms behind his back and disarms him.

"Did you really think you were going to win?" the dark mage calmly expresses.

The veins in Galavant's neck tighten and his eyes turn red.

"You have been very naive Mirtha," mentions the dark wizard to the priestess lying defeated not far from him.

"To think, that these pitiful wretches could defeat me."

A series of detonations surprise both the dark magician and the defeated.

The mage makes some magical movements but I end up unloading all my bullets on his body and head.

His body falls inert; and I take the opportunity to reload my weapon and unload 17 more bullets on his body.

Finally, the black clouds of smoke that invade the valley dissipate.

The priestess seals the corpse of the dark mage, waiting for another 3 thousand years to pass for his return.

Peace reigns again in the shire and I make sure to return Wanda to her owner.

See you next time...

No debí haber tomado esa maldita caja.
