Ever since they were children, Wez and his brother Maty have always relied on music as a means of survival; in a market square, they would sing imitations of the popular, trendy tunes playing on the radio to attract the attention of passersby and earn their support by receiving coins and small bills.

They may have stood out more for their playing of musical instruments than for their vocal range, but they still exuded enough charisma to hold the audience’s attention—and no wonder, since as brothers they displayed remarkable synchronicity and complemented each other perfectly.

Like any farmhand, he had responsibilities, including looking after the chickens and the few vegetables in his humble garden. Since the economic situation at the time did not allow for much morality in the town, many adults stole out of necessity, while others simply traded a chicken for a bottle of alcohol to feed their vices, as several droughts had ravaged the county and life was hard for everyone.

One day, at his uncle’s command, Wez was tasked with protecting the property. Thinking they could overpower a mere child, some middle-aged women approached him with false promises to buy some vegetables. They trapped him, beat him nearly to death, but the boy managed to retrieve the old weapon and wound one woman and kill another.

Within a few years, the drought had destroyed the entire agricultural area in that county; his uncle sold the desolate farm, and his brother died while trying to steal food from another farm.

So, with nothing left to fight for, he decided to walk along the highway, gradually moving away from that desolate place.
Along the way, some truck drivers helped him; other times, he walked until he was exhausted and ate squirrels or whatever shrews he could find.
Sleeping out in the open helped him write song lyrics, and whenever he could reach a place with people, he sang for money to get by day to day.

A few years and months passed, and he managed to reach the far end of the country where the economy was relatively stable. In various bars, he managed to attract an audience drawn to the stories he told through his music. Of course, he wasn’t on the same level as a professional country band, but the raw honesty of his stories and the melancholy with which he sings them convey the authenticity of music that isn’t just made up for the sake of singing, but rather a truth spoken aloud.

Wez has achieved just enough recognition to stand out, but he’s always had quite a few problems with the audience; often, the middle-aged women who attend his shows remind him of the women who beat him as a child to the point of nearly killing him… and his nerves get the better of him, causing him to leave the stage because his voice gives out.

So whenever the bar or cantina owner sees that there is an adult female audience, he recommends that Wez turn off the microphone and postpone the show, switching out the artist on stage for another guest while the women leave the venue.

Sometimes Wez can wrap up the show if that audience leaves, but other times there isn’t enough time and he only gets a third of his pay... though it depends on how close he is with the owner of the bar he’s visiting and whether he explains his trauma so they’ll be sympathetic toward him.
