Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

Looking back at 2023, quite a few famous songwriters and musicians passed away. I thought I would do a series of weekly posts about some of them, as well as attempt to cover one of the songs that made them so famous.

Here is a list of some of the musicians and songwriters that passed away in 2023, that I will be researching and trying to cover:

  1. Sixto Rodriguez – already covered here! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/hcubehfg)
  2. Robbie Robertson – already covered here! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/cvxkndmg)
  3. Tina Turner – already covered here! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/sclypzzx)
  4. Sinead o’ Connor – already covered here! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/jxljehms)
  5. Shane MacGowan - already covered here! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/cumgifhy)
  6. Jeff Beck – already covered here! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/music-tribute-to-artists-we)
  7. David Crosby – already covered here! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/ymxfhwbs)
  8. Burt Bacharach - already covered here! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/hkwgsief)
  9. Harry Belafonte
  10. Gordon Lightfoot
  11. Tony Bennett

At least, these are the ones I am most familiar with! There were plenty of others too I’m afraid!

Let’s get cracking with Number 9 on my list: Harry Belafonte!

You can read up on Harry Belafonte here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Belafonte

He was an actor, a human rights advocate AND a musician that popularised calypso music in the 1950s and 1960s. He sangs songs like "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)", "Jump in the Line (Shake, Senora)" and the song I’d like to tackle: "Jamaica Farewell".

Here is the original version:

Besides music and acting, Belafonte was a close confidante of Martin Luther King Jnr. during the civil rights movement and acted as the American Civil Liberties Union celebrity ambassador for juvenile justice issues.

As for music and acting, he won three Grammy Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Acheivement award. He is one of very few people to have won a Grammy, an Emmy, a Tony Award and an Oscar!

May he rest in peace!

Lyrics of “Jamaica Farewell” by Harry Belafonte

Down the way
Where the nights are gay
And the sun shines daily on the mountaintop
I took a trip on a sailing ship
And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop

But I'm sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down
My head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town

Sounds of laughter everywhere
And the dancing girls swing to and fro
I must declare my heart is there
Though I've been from Maine to Mexico

But I'm sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down
My head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town

Down at the market you can hear
Ladies cry out while on their heads they bear
Ackee, rice, salt, fish are nice
And the rum is fine any time o' year

But I'm sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down
My head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town

Down the way
Where the nights are gay
And the sun shines daily on the mountaintop
I took a trip on a sailing ship
And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop

But I'm sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down
My head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town

Sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down
My head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town.

Mirando hacia 2023, fallecieron bastantes compositores y músicos famosos.

  1. Sixto Rodríguez – ¡ya cubierto aquí! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/hcubehfg)
  2. Robbie Robertson – ¡ya cubierto aquí! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/cvxkndmg)
  3. Tina Turner – ¡ya cubierta aquí! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/sclypzzx)
  4. Sinead o' Connor: ¡ya se trata aquí! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/jxljehms)
  5. Shane MacGowan - ¡ya cubierto aquí! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/cumgifhy)
  6. Jeff Beck – ¡ya cubierto aquí! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/music-tribute-to-artists-we)
  7. David Crosby – ¡ya cubierto aquí! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/ymxfhwbs)
  8. Burt Bacharach - ¡ya cubierto aquí! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/hkwgsief)
  9. Harry Belafonte
  10. Gordon Lightfoot
  11. Tony Bennett

Canta canciones como "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)", "Jump in the Line (Shake, Senora)" y la canción que me gustaría abordar: "Jamaica Farewell".

Excellent cover! I was lucky enough to see Harry in concert on his 70th birthday in Frankfort, Germany! Seeing him perform had been on my life list since childhood, and when I realized I may not have many years to make my dream come true I decided it was worth the plane ticket! He was beyond marvelous!

Wow that is dedication! I am glad you loved the concert! Is there anybody else on the list of artists we lost in 2023 that you will particularly miss?

He was doing 2 concerts here in the states, both of which I would have needed to fly to, and tickets were 3 times as expensive as the Frankfort tickets. Plus I had Frequent Flyer miles on British Airways which couldn't be used on a domestic flight.
Sinead Oconnor is a favorite and I can't wait to hear which Gordon Lightfoot song you choose. I saw him perform and he didn't disappoint.
The artists who died in 2023 that I will miss most are John Prine and Jimmy Buffet.

Well I checked out John Prine first and really loved this video!

Unfortunately I see that he died back in 2020.

Jimmy Buffet did pass away in 2023 however, do you have a favourite song of his? Maybe I can still do it here, or... I am starting to take cover requests for the Hive Music Festival posts I do?
