Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

Welcome to Week 158 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for the week is “Let’s Defeat the Distance".

This was an easy one for me this week – of all the songs I know, the most appropriate song is actually something I wrote myself when my then girlfriend (now wife) @juliadick did a 6-month contract overseas and I missed her desperately! I took that inspiration and wrote a song called “Love Letter in Time of War”. Half love-song and half-protest-song, I even play harmonica on a rack similar to Bob Dylan (one of the kings of Protest songs!) Hahaha!

Another thing I like about this song is how I move between plucking, strumming and percussive styles, while trying to stick to the tempo… A proper foot-tap to stick to really helps! I also use two capos instead of one to make a sort of alternate tuning where I get a wider spread of low and high notes in the root chord than I normally would in standard tuning. It is almost like a fake “drop-C”.

The song describes the feelings of a young man who has been sent off to fight in a war that he doesn’t understand, and how he misses his partner or wife, who is the only thing he feels is actually worth fighting for in his perspective. His main aim is to stay alive and make it back to the one he loves.

My friend Craig Gainsborough-Waring once made a lovely video to accompany this song when he was studying film. He is now a Director/Producer based in New Zealand. He’s even won an Emmy recently! Please check what he was able to do with limited budget here:

Lyrics for "Love Letter in Time of War" by @jasperdick (Original)

In the morning, it was in your eye
Your love, I was the luckiest guy
In the sunshine, it was in your song
It was your love, when nothing was wrong
But the war came, and I had to go
Go fight for reasons that I do not know
In the evening, it was in your kiss,
Your love, like Heavenly bliss
In the nighttime, it was in your touch
It was your love, I miss you so much
'Coz the war came, and I had to go
Go fight for reasons that I do not know... I do not know...
Well it's cold out here, I'm pretty scared too
'Coz I'm no hero, I'm just missing you...
You know I'd fight for you, kill for you, die for you, but not for them...
So I'll just stay alive, until I see you again...
And you know one day I'll see you again
Yes one day I'll see you again... oh...
In the morning, it will be in my eye
My love, the happiest guy
In the evening, it will be in our kiss
Our love, like Heavenly bliss
... with all my love... (signing letter)

(carta firmada)

You got me with "cover" in brackets and the hat.. I did think it was your own song, so glad I didn't get that wrong. Excellent cover of an equally brilliant tune!
I love that video there too; Hollywood next!

That music video is incredibly well crafted, I particularly like the letter-writing scenes. It was also cool to see a much younger Jasper. Another great original tune, well written and well performed, nice one I like it a lot.

Cmajor on 7th fret makes it Gmaj... The top string has capo on 3rd for a deeper root G note. So basically a wider spread in low and high notes than normal. :)

I'm surprised more people don't play around like this, looking for ways to sound fuller without actually having to be more skilled! Hahaha

Aye i can see you bassing the G string, good effort man, I also really like the drum-tapping on your geet! :) yeah I play around like this a lot, its good for open tunings,

I actually have a capo that can select individual frets or strings specifically for open tunings, its a bit weird but kinda cool.

Still takes a bit of know how and a musical mind though ;)

Doesn't sound much more than a normal capo!

Is that a Cajon underneath?

Yeah it’s kinda cool when you get used to it, it just sits in a wee box not being used really.

Yeah haha that’s a mini cajon, got it for £2 in a charity shop! Gonna let the wee man play it when he’s old enough to sit on it haha

Ah, that's the thing - here in SA I can maybe order a "Spider Capo" but more for the equivalent of $35 so I would have to make sure I actually use it! Between my two-capo style and DADGAD, am I sorted for my own style or do I want to develop others? Similar to a slide I have bought - I need to make the time to see how to make it suit me and my song-writing, or does it just sit there!

You have a wee lad! I have a wee daughter who loves noisy toys, especially harmonicas! She's 20 months now, but has been tootling away since about 12 months!

Fantastic song and performed with such passion. The percussive sounds you used on your guitar really added to the individuality of your song. Brilliant.

One of your most beautiful creations. Every time I listen to you with a Harmonica I tell myself: I need to buy one. Super delighted with this song, and I'm inspired to create something inspired by a phrase. "In the morning, I was in your eye." What a beautiful letter. I congratulate you, friend. You are amazing with your guitar.
