Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 154 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for the week is “Musical Comedy”!

Well, this is a fantastic opportunity for me to take off my cover hat and show you some original material! For those of you who don’t know, I do get to perform in public sometimes, and when I do I wear the “Cover Hat of Shame” to signify to the audience where I didn’t write the song (and get ready to sing along if you know it…), and then I take the hat off for original songs (please listen carefully to my own special baby…). I have brought this hat-habit over to HIVE as well!

So, I/we do write serious songs (I promise!), but when I/we (we being my duo MobeyDick with @clairemobey) perform in public, I think it is important to give the audience an emotional break after some serious songs and give them something more light-hearted as well!

I couldn’t choose between two of my favourite originals that I do this with… so I thought I would quickly give you both as they are both quite short songs!

Let’s start with “The Greens”:

So, the story behind this song is that I wrote it (and a few others) to entertain my baby daughter Madison.

I must admit I have borrowed a lot from other famous artists! The music structure is an exact copy of the blues standard "Hoochie Coochie Man" by Muddy Waters. Here's a link to that:

And then the theme of the song? Well, I'm afraid I must pay homage to the great cartoonist Gary Larson and his "Far Side Comics", and in particular this one as shared on pinterest by Gail Winscott:

https://za.pinterest.com/pin/294774738080473960/

If you click on the link, you will see Gary Larson's wonderful comic of a band made up of frogs. Instead of singing the blues, they are singing "The Greens!" Because we have a lovely stuffed toy frog called "Padda" (the Afrikaans word for frog) - I thought I would expand on that idea and think up some reasons for why a frog might have "The Greens" to entertain my girl when she is a toddler and old enough to understand the joke! (That time is coming soon!)

For my second light-hearted funny song, let’s do “The Pick-Up Line Song”!

A “Pick-Up Line” is one of those cheesy things a man will say to a lady at a bar, gym or restaurant to try and start a conversation, and maybe buy her a drink. Something like “Did it hurt when you fell from Heaven… because you must be an angel!” Urgh, in this song, I try to imagine what it would be like to be some poor lady having to listen to these desperate sounding attempts by men to earn my attention…

My wife @juliadick thinks this song is going to get me cancelled (especially the last line), but most people who listen to it seem to understand the point I’m trying to make – that “Pick-Up Lines” make you sound absolutely desperate! As for getting cancelled, as a Chemical Engineering graduate, I can tell you that a napkin of chloroform is not nearly as instantly effective as the movies make it seem! (No, I have never tried personally either!)

Well, please let me know if you liked either of my light-hearted original songs and which one you prefer? I normally land up playing both in public to cheer up the audience after a serious song or two!

By the way, I am doing a weekly post on Thursdays where I ask for cover song requests in the comments, and then if I attempt your song in the following week's post, you become a beneficiary to 50% of the post's rewards in HP! Please check those out and think of song requests for me?

Lyrics for "The Greens" by @jasperdick (original - with apologies to Muddy Waters and Gary Larson)

When I was a tadpole, back in 1985
My momma told me I'd be the greatest frog alive
But now I'm starving 'coz I haven't caught a fly
The rain's not falling and the pond is going dry!

I got the Greens, I got the Greens so bad...
I can't even remember all the nice mosquitos I've had...

My baby left my lily pad, she found some other bloke
I don't know what charm he had, besides a deeper croak...
When I go down to the water, I have to check and see
That there ain't some crazy otter, making eyes at me...

I got the Greens, I got the Greens so bad...
I can't even remember all the nice mosquitos I've had...

When I was a tadpole, some children caught my brother (in a jar)
And even more traumatic, some Frenchman ate my mother!
Then I was a polywog, and that's a painful puberty
Now I'm a full grown frog and there's a heron stalking me...

But not on facebook mama, I got the Greens so bad...
I can't even remember all the nice mosquitos (all the ni-ice mosquitos) I've had...

Lyrics for “The Pick-Up Line Song” by @jasperdick (original)

You are so pretty, I don’t know what to say
Perhaps a hasty pick-up line, before you walk away…
(Think, come on, think… Ah!)

If we were praying mantises I would let you eat my head
At least I’d know my one true love was going to be well fed!
If I was a billionaire, for you I would still beg…
And if I was your puppy… I’d probably hump your leg!
(I’d hump your leg… I’d hump it real good! You’d like it!)

You are so pretty, I don’t know what to do
Perhaps a tasty pick-up line, will get me close to you…
(Think, come on, think… Ah!)

If I was your kitten, I’d catch you a fat mouse
And I’d drag its bleeding carcass straight into your house
If I was Casanova, I’d take you straight to bed…
And if I was a caveman, I’d probably club your head!
(I’d club your head… I’d club it real good! You’d like it!)

You are so pretty, you’re out my league it’s true
So tell me does this napkin smell of chloroform to you?

https://za.pinterest.com/pin/294774738080473960/

Para mi segunda canción alegre y divertida, ¡hagamos “The Pick-Up Line Song”!

(No, ¡nunca lo he intentado personalmente tampoco!)

Mi bebé dejó mi nenúfar, encontró a otro tipo

Letra de "The Pick-Up Line Song" de @jasperdick (original)

Y arrastraría su cadáver sangrante directamente a tu casa
