Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! I hope everybody is having a good start to the New Year?
This is Week 144 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge, and the theme for the week is “Melodic Dose”. Goodness me, what does that mean and what do you want? Hahaha!
I thought about how songs are made up of lyrics, melody and rhythm, and decided I wanted to do a song where the melody and the way it is sung makes the song beautiful and emotional to whoever is listening, even if there isn’t a driving rhythm behind it, or if the listener doesn’t understand the lyrics… so that’s quite a challenge!
I landed up choosing a beautiful simple poetic love song by Simon and Garfunkel called “For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her”. Have a look at how Art Garfunkel sings it, and Paul Simon plays it, and tell me it doesn’t fit the criteria of my challenge? For me, I think this is one of the most beautiful, Heavenly moments in music ever:

¡Hola a todos en Hive y especialmente a la comunidad Hive Open Mic! ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! Espero que todos estén teniendo un buen comienzo para el Año Nuevo.
Esta es la semana 144 del Hive Open Mic Challenge, y el tema de la semana es "Dosis melódica". Dios mío, ¿qué significa eso y qué quieres? ¡Jajaja!
Pensé en cómo las canciones se componen de letra, melodía y ritmo, y decidí que quería hacer una canción en la que la melodía y la forma en que se canta hacen que la canción sea hermosa y emotiva para quien la escucha, incluso si no hay un impulsando el ritmo detrás de él, o si el oyente no entiende la letra... ¡así que eso es todo un desafío!
Aterricé eligiendo una hermosa y sencilla canción de amor poética de Simon and Garfunkel llamada "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her". Echa un vistazo a cómo lo canta Art Garfunkel y cómo lo toca Paul Simon, y dime si no se ajusta a los criterios de mi desafío. It is an absolutely stunning song - I like how the two of them look at each other at the end of the song in the video I shared, and seem to know they made magic... (I don't think they always got along so well!)

Hello! Yes, it is not the most famous song of Simon & Garfunkel, but they made several amazing, but very soft, songs like these as well as the more famous stuff.
Oh, hahaha! I never wear shoes indoors and prefer not to outdoors if I can get away with it!

Thank you so much! I've always thought my voice is quite versatile and allows me to get away with trying various styles when I do covers... this was actually a bit of a challenge when it came to deciding how I wanted to sing on my own songs. In the end, I think I have landed up being quite versatile on them as well, and sing in ways that seem to suit each original song separately! I have definitely written some country and blues songs of my own, and I love singing them!
