Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 31 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival!

After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, four weeks ago I started wearing the “Cover Hat of Shame”. (When I started playing music in public, one of the first places I went to was called the Barleycorn Music Club, which heavily encouraged that we try out our original songs on the audience. I even joined the organising committee to put on the little gigs for a while. So, my “cover hat of shame” joke originates from those days! Hahaha!)

But… I don’t want to just play any old cover for the Hive Music Festival! You guys are my friends and deserve something special… a special effort from me! So, I thought I would challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that for every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival over the next few weeks, that I must use a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the eighth instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Wacky Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!

So far, we have had:
1.The Kazoo
2.The Pennywhistle
3.The Autoharp
4.The xylophone / glockenspiel
5.The Valiha (bamboo zither)
6.The ukelele
7.The piano sample sounds from the “Bongo Cat” Website
8.Random stuff I found in my kitchen

Now it is time for the ninth “Instrument of the Week” – My toddler daughter’s toys!

The first toy to show is the “rainstick” - it is like a long, complicated rattle where nails inside slow down the falling of the beads through the tube to make a sound like rain falling!

The other toy is a baby piano with 5 keys that cause a hammer to hit a metal bar to make a similar sound to a glockenspiel! This was very limiting for me, as the 5 notes (G, A#, C, D and D#) aren’t even the pentatonic scale!

I decided to (OFF WITH THE COVER HAT OF SHAME!) write my own song based on the limited kind of melody I could get out of the thing! Sometimes having limitations can force us to be creative – in fact that’s what I seem to be learning out of playing new instruments I don’t know very well every week!

The first stab at this new song is called “Desperation Lullaby”! A Lullaby is the kind of song you try to sing to your child to make them go to sleep! My poor toddler daughter has been sick this week, and my poor wife @juliabaker is incredibly tired, so it seems natural that this kind of song would come out of me this week… perhaps all you other parents can remember feeling like this?

Thank you so much for tuning in! What weird and wacky instrument will I tackle next week? I hope you join me and find out!

Lyrics for "Desperation Lullaby" by @jasperdick (Original)

Go to sleep my darling, no need to weep my darling, daddy is here, there’s nothing to fear
Go to sleep my darling, not a peep my darling, mommy is here, we’ll always be near
Stop with the stalling darling, your bed is calling darling, go back to sleep
No need for sorrow darling, we’ll play tomorrow darling, but first we sleep

Again delighted and excited by your creativity and originality. We congratulate you for the great work presented. The Rain Stick creates an incredibly relaxing sensation. It's amazing how a toy piano can add a touch of tenderness to a performance. Standing applause.

Hey dude! Yeah the schools were off from Friday til Monday so we were off camping for all of it then took an extra day off to go to the beach and relax a bit more, cleaning and unpacking a lot today and yesterday, hadn’t had a chance to post,

Also I had a problem on hive I accidentally spammed a few extra comments and I almost lost 3 post payouts because of it, luckily I was able to redeem it all back today! :) 🙏 thank god. Haha.

Thanks for asking, how’s things your way? :)
