MUSIC: Three Tune Tuesday 146 (ENG/ESP) - 3 Songs on the Theme of “Musical Idol” (Hive Open Mic Week 205)

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing to you from a small ski resort village in the French Alps (rather than my normal home in Cape Town, South Africa)!

Welcome to "Three Tune Tuesday", an initiative started by @ablaze. It is week 146 overall! My current pattern for how I will be contributing to TTT is to take the Hive Open Mic challenge Theme of the Week and give suggestions on how I would tackle it!

For those of you who are not familiar, the Hive Open Mic is a weekly challenge on the Hive Open Mic community for anybody who loves to sing. You don’t even need to play an instrument, a backing track or a cappella is also fine as far as I can tell!

Different artists are given the chance to choose a “Theme of the Week” that the posts should be based on. Often it can be difficult for people to think about easy songs that might fit that theme… so let me see if I can be of any assistance to the people who still might not know what to try by the time Tuesday comes around!

It was the turn of @wealthwess to pick a theme, and this week the theme is “Musical Idol”.

Now here is where I get a little bit preachy… I don’t think we should idolize anybody. Famous musicians are just people who practiced their talent and got famous through a mixture of hard work and some luck. This doesn’t necessarily make them good, kind people, which to me is far more important.

Let’s take Van Morrison for example. I love his music! I have been lucky enough to see him play live… and he came across as a grumpy little old man. He even turned around to crap on his band when they weren’t doing exactly what he wanted… “Just play the chords!”

What about R. Kelly – the singer of the inspirational “I Believe I Can Fly” now sits in jail for sex trafficking!

So… unless I actually personally know somebody to be a good person, I can hardly idolize them.

There’s also no point in me suggesting my favourite famous musicians – they’re not going to be your favourite famous musicians anyway!

So, instead, I’m going to introduce you to three peers of mine that you’ve probably never heard of, but whose song-writing I really admired when I was starting out in the Cape Town open mic kind of scene as a student, and who I at least can vouch for as lovely people!

SONG NUMBER 1

“Georgia” – Derek Leisegang

Derek and I used to serve as the youngest committee members on the Barleycorn Music Club when we were Masters students in engineering, so we have a lot in common. The main difference is that Derek has gone onto win the Club’s annual songwriting competition several times. I, on the other hand, tried a couple of times when I was younger and placed in the Top 10, but got really despondent when my “babies” (new songs) didn’t place in the Top 3, and soon gave up trying figuring that I couldn’t change the way I write songs anyway…

Strangely to me, this song, my absolute favourite by Derek, apparently did not get anywhere in that year’s contest… which has made me start to think that the judges actually don’t know what the Hell they are doing! I believe “Georgia” is actually a missile, with a pin-up painted on it, if you listen to the lyrics carefully.

SONG NUMBER 2

“Ordinary Town” – Emma du Preez

Emma was a friend of mine who was also playing similar places as a student and then also seemed to disappear into the “real world” of work, despite considerable song-writing talent. I am happy to say that, like me, Emma has emerged and is starting to play the odd show again, usually teaming up with Shotgun Tori from the Gauteng Province of South Africa…

I guess we need to accept that very few musicians become household names in South Africa, especially when singing in English, where we can just as easily listen to international artists on the radio. The exceptions I can think of include Goldfish, the Kiffness, Jeremy Loops, Black Coffee and Tyla, among a couple of others, but believe me there is plenty other talent with “Day Jobs” here in sunny South Africa!

SONG NUMBER 3

“Winter Song” – Zaria van Jaarsveld

Zaria was probably the first musical friend I made when I started to write songs. She lived in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens (her father worked as a botanist there), and it would be magical to go and visit and play music there.

I don’t know how to describe Zaria – she was the closest thing to a fairy I have met in this life. She would come up with songs out of the blue and had this weird behaviour that seemed to be picking the lyrics right out of the sky… I’ve never really met anyone else like that before…

And the high-pitched, but angelic voice… give it a listen…

So that’s a bit of a different entry from me – I can’t expect any of you to cover any of those songs because they will all be brand new to you… I wonder if even I can pull one of them off… or maybe a bit of all three?

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad musical. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo desde una pequeña estación de esquí en los Alpes franceses (en lugar de mi hogar habitual en Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica)!

Bienvenidos a "Three Tune Tuesday", una iniciativa iniciada por @ablaze. ¡Es la semana 146 en total! Mi patrón actual sobre cómo contribuiré a TTT es tomar el tema de la semana del desafío Hive Open Mic y dar sugerencias sobre cómo lo abordaría.

Para aquellos de ustedes que no están familiarizados, Hive Open Mic es un desafío semanal en la comunidad de Hive Open Mic para cualquiera que ame cantar. ¡Ni siquiera necesitas tocar un instrumento, por lo que yo sé, una pista de acompañamiento o a capela también está bien!

Diferentes artistas tienen la oportunidad de elegir un “Tema de la semana” en el que se basarán las publicaciones. A menudo puede resultar difícil para las personas pensar en canciones sencillas que puedan encajar en ese tema... ¡así que déjenme ver si puedo ser de alguna ayuda para las personas que quizás todavía no sepan qué probar cuando llegue el martes!

Ahora aquí es donde empiezo a sermonear un poco... No creo que debamos idolatrar a nadie. Los músicos famosos son simplemente personas que practicaron su talento y se hicieron famosos gracias a una mezcla de trabajo duro y algo de suerte. Esto no necesariamente los convierte en personas buenas y amables, lo cual para mí es mucho más importante.

Tomemos como ejemplo a Van Morrison. ¡Amo su música! He tenido la suerte de verlo tocar en vivo… y parecía un viejecito gruñón. Incluso se dio la vuelta para cagar en su banda cuando no estaban haciendo exactamente lo que él quería... "¡Sólo toca los acordes!"

¿Qué pasa con R. Kelly, el cantante de la inspiradora “I Believe I Can Fly” que ahora se encuentra en la cárcel por tráfico sexual?

Así que... a menos que conozca personalmente a alguien que sea una buena persona, difícilmente puedo idolatrarle.

Tampoco tiene sentido que sugiera mis músicos famosos favoritos: ¡de todos modos, no serán tus músicos famosos favoritos!

Entonces, en lugar de eso, les presentaré a tres compañeros míos de los que probablemente nunca hayan oído hablar, pero cuyas composiciones realmente admiraba cuando comencé en la escena del micrófono abierto de Ciudad del Cabo como estudiante. , ¡y de quienes al menos puedo dar fe de que son personas encantadoras!

CANCIÓN NÚMERO 1

“Georgia” – Derek Leisegang

Curiosamente para mí, esta canción, mi favorita absoluta de Derek, aparentemente no llegó a ninguna parte en el concurso de ese año... ¡lo que me hizo empezar a pensar que los jueces en realidad no saben qué diablos están haciendo! Creo que “Georgia” es en realidad un misil, con una pin-up pintada en él, si escuchas la letra con atención.

CANCIÓN NÚMERO 2

“Ciudad ordinaria” – Emma du Preez

Emma era una amiga mía que también tocaba en lugares similares cuando era estudiante y luego también pareció desaparecer en el “mundo real” del trabajo, a pesar de su considerable talento para escribir canciones. Me alegra decir que, como yo, Emma ha emergido y está comenzando a tocar en algún que otro espectáculo nuevamente, generalmente haciendo equipo con Shotgun Tori de la provincia de Gauteng en Sudáfrica...

Supongo que debemos aceptar que muy pocos músicos se vuelven famosos en Sudáfrica, especialmente cuando cantan en inglés, donde podemos escuchar con la misma facilidad a artistas internacionales en la radio. Las excepciones que se me ocurren incluyen a Goldfish, Kiffness, Jeremy Loops, Black Coffee y Tyla, entre un par de otros, pero créanme, ¡hay muchos otros talentos con “Day Jobs” aquí en la soleada Sudáfrica!

“Canción de invierno” – Zaria van Jaarsveld

Zaria fue probablemente la primera amiga musical que hice cuando comencé a escribir canciones. Ella vivía en el Jardín Botánico de Kirstenbosch (su padre trabajaba como botánico allí), y sería mágico ir a visitarlo y tocar música allí.

No sé cómo describir a Zaria: era lo más parecido a un hada que he conocido en esta vida. A ella se le ocurrían canciones de la nada y tenía este comportamiento extraño que parecía estar escogiendo las letras directamente del cielo... Nunca había conocido a nadie así antes...

Y la voz aguda, pero angelical… escúchala…

Así que esa es una entrada un poco diferente de mi parte: no puedo esperar que ninguno de ustedes haga un cover de ninguna de esas canciones porque todas serán nuevas para ustedes... Me pregunto si incluso yo puedo realizar una de ellas... o tal vez una un poco de los tres?
