Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from France. (I usually live in Cape Town, South Africa and will be back there in two weeks)! Welcome to Week 73 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival!

Let’s continue my new theme for my Hive Music Festival entries:

Sometimes as musicians we tend to take ourselves a little bit too seriously. I definitely remember doing this when I first started playing Open Mic nights and pubs when I was a younger man. Sometimes it’s important to remember that it’s okay to just have fun with our music!

One of the ways that I like to do this is to take a cheesy pop song and try and cover it on solo acoustic guitar. Will the song still be catchy and recognisable in its bare-bones form due to its chord structure, melody and hooks? Sometimes! Other times, the attempt seems to fall flat, and I then realise that what made the song stand out were probably special sounds/effects or something else to do with the production that I cannot emulate… it’s an interesting game to play!

So far, I have tackled songs by Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears

Today I would like to tackle the song that made “Tones and I”, and her very unique voice, famous – the very catchy and recognisable “Dance Monkey”.

So, after playing the cover…

I think what makes these songs so easy for me to cover is the fact that I have heard them so many times on the radio that they are quite ingrained in me, even if I thought I wasn’t paying that much attention, it is still music and so part of me is actually holding onto it. Then I just have to find the guitar chords, and I’m ready to go. It would be a lot harder with songs I haven’t heard many times already.

Because of this, I keep surprising myself with how I already know the melody and emotion, and even the quirks of the song… and getting close to it in the first few tries is a lot of fun, and quite rewarding!

There are some theories that pop songs are being written in a way that is very easy on the ear, not too challenging, so that we can like it almost immediately… as I mentioned with the Britney Spears song, a lot of pop songs by different artists are actually written by the same people and then sold to different artists… this helps to explain why they seem to fit into a formula?

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad Music Zone. Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Francia. (¡Normalmente vivo en Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica y regresaré allí en dos semanas)! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 73/Ronda 1 del Hive Music Festival!

Continuamos con mi nuevo tema para mis entradas al Hive Music Festival:

A veces, como músicos, tendemos a tomarnos demasiado en serio. Definitivamente recuerdo haber hecho esto cuando comencé a tocar en pubs y noches de Open Mic cuando era más joven. ¡A veces es importante recordar que está bien simplemente divertirse con nuestra música!

Una de las formas en que me gusta hacer esto es tomar una canción pop cursi e intentar versionarla con un solo de guitarra acústica. ¿Seguirá siendo la canción pegadiza y reconocible en su forma básica debido a su estructura de acordes, melodía y ganchos? ¡A veces! Otras veces, el intento parece fracasar, y entonces me doy cuenta de que lo que hizo que la canción se destacara probablemente fueron sonidos/efectos especiales o algo más relacionado con la producción que no puedo emular... ¡es un juego interesante!

Hasta ahora he abordado canciones de Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera y Britney Spears.

Hoy me gustaría abordar la canción que hizo famosa a “Tones and I” y su singular voz: la muy pegadiza y reconocible “Dance Monkey”.

Creo que lo que hace que estas canciones sean tan fáciles de interpretar para mí es el hecho de que las he escuchado tantas veces en la radio que están bastante arraigadas en mí, incluso si pensaba que no estaba prestando mucha atención, todavía es así. música y por eso una parte de mí se aferra a ella. Luego sólo tengo que encontrar los acordes de guitarra y estoy listo para comenzar. Sería mucho más difícil con canciones que no he escuchado muchas veces.

Debido a esto, sigo sorprendiéndome de cómo ya conozco la melodía y la emoción, e incluso las peculiaridades de la canción... ¡y acercarme a ella en los primeros intentos es muy divertido y bastante gratificante!
