Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa! Welcome to Week 14 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival! I have only done original songs so far for the Hive Music Festival:

•In weeks 1 to 3 I did some of my softer, more finger-picking, style of original songs.
•In weeks 4-6 I raised the tempo a bit and started strumming on some more original songs.
•In weeks 7-9, I picked some original songs that would allow me to rock out as hard as my acoustic guitar allows, and I also showed how I like to play alternative tunings like “DADGAD”.
•In weeks 10-12 I introduced a loop pedal device to allow me to fill out some of my original songs…

From now on, let me just play whatever original song I feel like on the day, hey?

Today I am in a funny mood, and thought it would be nice to try and show that I don’t only write serious songs. Sometimes the audience deserves a bit of a laugh in-between all the sad and serious songs! It’s getting to the crunch time of January, which is often the longest month of the year, especially when it comes to money running out, so let’s try cheer up with something fun!

Today’s original song is called “The Pick-Up Line Song”. A “Pick-Up Line” is one of those cheesy things a man will say to a lady at a bar, gym or restaurant to try and start a conversation, and maybe buy her a drink. Something like “Did it hurt when you fell from Heaven… because you must be an angel!” Urgh, in this song, I try to imagine what it would be like to be some poor lady having to listen to these desperate sounding attempts by men to earn my attention…

My wife @juliadick thinks this song is going to get me cancelled (especially the last line), but most people who listen to it seem to understand the point I’m trying to make – that “Pick-Up Lines” make you sound absolutely desperate! As for getting cancelled, as a Chemical Engineering graduate, I can tell you that a napkin of chloroform is not nearly as instantly effective as the movies make it seem! (No, I have never tried personally either!)

Instead of cheesy “Pick-Up Lines”, my mother tried to teach me to walk up to a lady, put my chin in my hands, and say “Tell me about yourself” instead… Haha, that just sounds like a different kind of “Pick-Up Line” to me! Maybe her advice was a bit too obvious… but I suppose a more subtle version of that could work, as long as you actually listened to her answers, and asked decent follow-up questions about her interests!

With great fortune in my own life, I happened to meet @juliadick when we were both young, and I never had to practice my “Pick-Up Lines”, or my mom’s “Tell me about yourself” routine ever again. Good! - I am actually very shy in real life and would probably have no “game”!

I hope you like the song! Thank you very much for watching! I look forward to seeing your entries and hope to see you again next week!

Before I go: Please look out for my weekly cover request post on Thursday! If you make a song request in the comments, and then I attempt the song, you get rewarded with 50% of that post's rewards in HP!

Lyrics for “The Pick-Up Line Song” by @jasperdick (original)

You are so pretty, I don’t know what to say
Perhaps a hasty pick-up line, before you walk away…

(Think, come on, think… Ah!)

If we were praying mantises I would let you eat my head
At least I’d know my one true love was going to be well fed!
If I was a billionaire, for you I would still beg…
And if I was your puppy… I’d probably hump your leg!

(I’d hump your leg… I’d hump it real good! You’d like it!)

You are so pretty, I don’t know what to do
Perhaps a tasty pick-up line, will get me close to you…

(Think, come on, think… Ah!)

If I was your kitten, I’d catch you a fat mouse
And I’d drag its bleeding carcass straight into your house
If I was Casanova, I’d take you straight to bed…
And if I was a caveman, I’d probably club your head!

(I’d club your head… I’d club it real good! You’d like it!)

You are so pretty, you’re out my league it’s true
So tell me does this napkin smell of chloroform to you?

(No, ¡nunca lo he intentado personalmente tampoco!)

Letra de "The Pick-Up Line Song" de @jasperdick (original)

Y arrastraría su cadáver sangrante directamente a tu casa

hahaha, I don't ever want a caveman, but yes there are still many out there trying to show their love that way (this is sad).

I really liked the lyrics, and it's perfectly understood that it's in a sarcastic tone, I don't think you'll get cancelled for this, hahaha.

Definitely many people should change the methods of courting others.

Hahaha - of all the things to get cancelled for, I hope it's not this song!

What a thrill it is to listen to you every week. And that each one of them, you surprise with another of his great creations. Once again, he did it again. Especially because you are right when you say that we also need to laugh. No, you are not disqualified from anything. Music is a means of expression and here you have done it very well. We are sure that you have left the audience very enthusiastic about your interpretation.

Thank you so very much! Yes, I think it's nice to write songs in a variety of genres and emotions - it means on the odd occasion I get to play live, then I get to take the audience on a bit of an up-and-down rollercoaster ride!

That is absolutely hysterical!

My daughter is actually a Chemical Engineering graduate, too. And a musician! She plays piano, but does not sing. Nor write songs.

Ah that's great - you should be proud of your daughter as it is a difficult degree and requires hard work to get through!

That's interesting that she is musical! If I think back I had a classmate that rapped, another classmate that played in a metal band, and then I had a tutor who was the frontman of quite a successful reggae/ska band actually! Maybe the music and the maths go together quite nicely!

You know, I think you're right about music and math. My oldest son is a math whiz and can play about any instrument he picks up; french horn, piano, ukulele and whatever else he manages to touch. I am really trying to convince him to engage more in music but, so far, that seems to be an uphill battle.

Try ask him why a major chord is a major and a minor chord is a minor... there's quite a beautiful, mathematical pattern to it!

Someone had to teach me that basic theory and then it now means I can play guitar in different tunings or try teach myself different instruments a bit as well.

So tell me does this napkin smell of chloroform to you?

This is the best part of the song hahahaha. I have had fun with the lyrics of the song, you are a great composer. The composer can grant himself liberties, that's the wonderful thing about music, it doesn't have a straitjacket. I congratulate you on this excellent interpretation. You have us used to an incredible level. Congratulations brother!

Hahaha - yes it would be the line that my wife thinks will get me "cancelled" that I also think is the best part of the song... I don't think the song would be the same without that line at all!
