Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 60 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

Two weeks ago, I played “Free Fallin’” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I explained that John Mayer did a fantastic, laid back, finger-picking styled cover of this song on acoustic guitar. Last week, I did another amazing song that John Mayer covered, namely “Message in a Bottle” by Sting and the Police.

This week I thought I would complete the three-week cycle by finally doing a John Mayer original. I would like to do a bit of an obscure one, but it happens to be one of my absolute favourites by John Mayer: “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967”.

There is something about this song that just appeals to man’s search for meaning, adventure, freedom and solitude from society that I think a lot of us men (and maybe some ladies too?) secretly crave… while we continue to do what is expected of us to fit into society. I find this song absolutely wonderful – especially the line “and for once in his life it was quiet”, when the hero of the story finally manages to try out his home-made submarine for real!

While searching for an original video for the song, I found this beautiful, animated video made by fans to accompany the song.

And then I found this one where an artist creates an animated video to a cover version by her brother, which is also stunning… It is clear that I am not the only person who loves this John Mayer song.

The original version (in the first video) starts with a beautiful trumpet introduction that I hope our friend @yisusth enjoys!

Hace dos semanas, jugué “Free Fallin’” de Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Le expliqué que John Mayer hizo una versión fantástica, relajada y con estilo de tocar los dedos de esta canción en guitarra acústica. La semana pasada, hice otra canción increíble que John Mayer versionó, a saber, “Message in a Bottle” de Sting and the Police.

Esta semana pensé en completar el ciclo de tres semanas haciendo finalmente un original de John Mayer. Me gustaría hacer uno un poco oscuro, pero resulta que es uno de mis favoritos absolutos de John Mayer: "Walt Grace's Submarine Test, enero de 1967".

Y luego encontré este en el que una artista crea un vídeo animado con una versión de su hermano, que también es impresionante... Está claro que no soy la única persona a la que le encanta esta canción de John Mayer.
