Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

Welcome to Week 162 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for the week is “Be Okay"! Actually, here in Cape Town the seasons are changing, and my nose is blocked (again!) from a cold – so theoretically I’m not okay! Hahaha!

But let’s use my more nasally voice to my advantage and sing the blues! Now usually, the blues is about feeling sad… but I happen to know an exception with the lyrics:

I had the blues, so bad one time
It put my face in a permanent frown
Now, I'm feelin' so much better
I could cakewalk in the town

Now a “cakewalk” is a happy-looking dance-like strutting walk! You can read more on the phrase here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cakewalk

But with lyrics like that, I think the song is a celebration of the theme “Be Okay”. “Cakewalk Into Town” was released by the fabulous blues artist Taj Mahal in 1972. It actually sounds like it could be even older with the way it was arranged in the recording… have a listen to the original here!

Lyrics for “Cakewalk into Town” by Taj Mahal

I had the blues, so bad one time
It put my face in a permanent frown
Now, I'm feelin' so much better
I could cakewalk in the town

I woke up this mornin' feelin' so good
You know, I lay back down again
Throw your big leg over me, mama
I might not feel this good again

My baby, oh, my baby
I love the way she walk
When the girl gets sleepy
I love the way she baby talk

My work don't got scarce, honey
Oh [?] it no got hard
I spend my whole day stealin' chickens
Mama, from the rich folks yard

I got the blues so bad one time
It put my face in a permanent frown
You know, I'm feelin' so much better
I could cakewalk into town

I want to go on a picnic
In the country mama oh, and stay all day
I don't care but don't do nothing
Just while my time away

I got the blues, so bad one time
It put my face in a permanent frown
You know, I'm feelin' so much better
I could cakewalk into town

Ahora, me siento mucho mejor

Ahora, me siento mucho mejor

Mi trabajo no escasea, cariño
Oh [?]

Sabes, me siento mucho mejor

Sabes, me siento mucho mejor
Podría caminar a la ciudad

Wow, that's a fun song. I love the rhythm and the guitar strums you do. This is the song that makes me rock.

It is generally accepted that rock and metal comes from the blues! Thank you so much for listening!!!

Always amazing brother! You are so right about the blues, it is always a good companion for sad moments, but I already know some with this atmosphere of good vibes that you share with us here. Bravo man, it's a great sound with your voice, the guitar and even the whistles...

Super cool to contrast your presentation with the original theme. The sound of the tuba caught my attention in the original. Your presentation stands out for being fresher and more recent. Congratulations Jasper. Excellent performance.

Hello @yisusth! Knowing your love of the trumpet, I have been meaning to share with you a wonderful classic multi-racial South African band that was at its peak when Apartheid (racial segregation) was ending in South Africa in the late 1980s and early 1990s and still get together for concerts (I was able to see one a few months ago!). They make great use of trumpet, saxophone and pennywhistle... They are called "Mango Groove" - please check out the song below and let me know if you enjoy? @itzchemaya I think you might like them too!
