Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa!

I have decided to start a challenging series of posts! BUT I Need your Help!

This is the challenge I'm setting myself every week: I ask for cover song requests on the MUSIC community, and then pick a favourite song to learn and post a live video of me attempting it. The person who asked for the winning song then gets 50% of the post rewards in HP!

I received some excellent requests this week! If I didn't get around to your request this week, please keep asking for it and there is a good chance it will win in the weeks to come! Please keep trying with either the same request, or a different one, in the comments of this post?

There were also some songs that I would love to tackle with my singing and writing friend @clairemobey. When I see her again we will do some duets, or songs where she should sing lead, and share the posts and reward the people who requested those songs as well! This request challenge seems to be (hopefully) taking off!

Let's get to this week's winner!

This week's winner is @thefoxygeeksa who asked for this brand new song called "How do I say Goodbye" by an artist called Dean Lewis, who I had never even heard of. It is a brilliantly emotional song written to his father who has been diagnosed with cancer. As somebody who has lost a dear friend to cancer, and who's parents are approaching their mid seventies in age, it really hits home for me!

@thefoxygeeksa is brand new to HIVE, so I hope a couple of HP from being a 50% beneficiary to this post will help her start her HIVE journey!

I had so many requests I couldn't help but tackle another, even if it means pretty much learning it on the spot. @jlinaresp (Jesus Linares) asked (for a second time - so he really wants to hear it!) for "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers, which is an absolute classic, so at least I (and almost every human-being in the Western World) already knew the chorus!

@jlinaresp - You are getting 20% of this post reward in HP as well! @jlinaresp is from Venezuela and is an excellent photographer, so please give him a follow! He has been really supportive of my music posts, but also my other kinds of posts like surfing as well!

NOW READER, perhaps next week is your turn? Please give me some suggestions of cover songs you would like me to try next week, and maybe you'll be the winner next time!

See you Next Week!

Lyrics for "How do I say Goodbye" by Dean Lewis

Early morning there's a message on my phone
It's my mother saying, "Darling, please come home"
I fear the worst, but how could you leave us all behind?
There's so much to say but there's so little time
So how do I say goodbye
To someone who's been with me for my whole damn life?
You gave me my name and the color of your eyes
I see your face when I look at mine
So how do I, how do I, how do I say goodbye?
When I couldn't, you always saw the best in me
Right or wrong, you were always on my side
But I'm scared of what life without you's like
And I saw the way she looked into your eyes
And I promise if you go, I will make sure she's alright
So how do I say goodbye
To someone who's been with me for my whole damn life?
You gave me my name and the color of your eyes
I see your face when I look at mine
So how do I, how do I, how do I say goodbye?
And there's no way you could ever let me down
Gonna steal some time and start again
You'll always be my closest friend
And someday we are gonna make it out
Just hold the light, just hold the light
So how do I say goodbye
To someone who's been with me for my whole damn life?
You gave me my name and the color of your eyes
I see your face when I look at mine
So how do I, how do I, how do I say goodbye?
So how do I, how do I, how do I say goodbye?

Lyrics for "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers

On a warm summer's evening
On a train bound for nowhere
I met up with a gambler
We were both too tired to sleep
So we took turns a-starin'
Out the window at the darkness
The boredom overtook us
And he began to speak

He said, "Son, I've made a life
Out of readin' people's faces
And knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes.
So if you don't mind my sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice."

So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette
And asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet
And his face lost all expression
Said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy,
You gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold 'em,
Know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away,
And know when to run.
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealing's done.

Every gambler knows
That the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away
And knowin' what to keep.
'Cause every hand's a winner,
And every hand's a loser,
And the best that you can hope for
Is to die in your sleep."

And when he finished speakin'
He turned back toward the window
Crushed out his cigarette
And faded off to sleep
And somewhere in the darkness
The gambler he broke even
And in his final words
I found an ace that I could keep*

You got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealing's done

You've got to know when to hold 'em
(When to hold 'em)
Know when to fold 'em
(When to fold 'em)
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealing's done

You got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealing's done

Fantastic cover. You sing and ply it so well. What a sad song though. I don't think I could sing that without breaking down. I lost a dear friend to cancer this year. It's so hard to accept that I'll never speak to him again.

Oh no Barbara - I am so sorry to hear that! Yes, cancer is awful and it's so hard to accept how slow our progress in treating it has been over the years when we seem to make massive strides in other medical fields...

Please let me know if you think of a cover you would like me to try? I think you seem to know a whole side of music that I might not be aware of yet!

Hi Jasper, as always your sound is very beautiful, this initiative is also very generous to the other hivers that pass by your blog leaving their musical requests. Great performance!

The only thing I could recommend you is to avoid making two posts a day and even with so little time between them and in the same community, that may interfere in the support you may receive because if one post got good support the other one may not get it cause.

Thanks for bringing your good music to the community :)

Hi Eugelys - thank you so much for your support!

Yes, I think I see what you mean about two posts at once - at least so far the second one isn't get much traffic! I am glad this post went first and got a nice big powerful vote (thanks Appreciator and everyone else who has supported this post!) that I can share out with the beneficiaries. I think I was going to schedule the Hive Music Festival Round 1 post for tomorrow, but must have rushed it when I saw that our part of town in South Africa was scheduled for its turn for an electricity black-out!

We have scheduled rolling electricity outages in South Africa at the moment as many powerplants are down with problems (very old coal powerplants) and electricity supply is not as much as demand! Rich people are buying generators, invertors or even rooftop solar panels, while the rest of us just make a hot thermos for the baby's formula and wait it out for two hours! Even I should consider a small invertor if this keeps going...

I am sorry that you are going through a very similar situation like here (Venezuela).
I imagine that you had to publish so fast for some special reason and v, thanks for motivating you with the Festival and for your nice initiative, I appreciate that you take my advice into account and I hope that you can solve the situation with the electric service that we need so much, especially when we have some work to do on the internet.

Oooh, we do worry sometimes about following Venezuela's economic collapse even more (one of our neighbouring countries Zimbabwe is quite similar and a lot of those people escape here for a better life), and we watch our Politicians quite carefully. I have friends choose to leave South Africa and raise their families elsewhere in places like Canada and Australia, but I really love Cape Town... I don't know...

Me specifically - my primary job is working for a company that develops renewable electricity (wind and solar) - so I hope to directly help the electricity situation... but it will take some years even if the right Political decisions are made from now on. Lately, the Politicians are making some good decisions about opening up the market and allowing private companies to buy electricity directly to ease the strain on the National Electricity utility.

That first song is a tear jerker....you almost had me crying a time or 2 there.

Nice cover of the gambler ,its been a while since I heard or played that one.

My song request would be to see what you do with an old Irish tune like The Irish Rover :)

Ah well I've heard of the Dubliners but the younger lads playing along are called the Pogues who are famous for mixing Celtic and Punk? That's something to get my head around! Hahaha!

How's the teeth on Shane MacGowan? Bloody horrendous! I've just looked him up on Wikipedia and it says he has no natural teeth left and has false teeth now - I assume that's from drug use?

Hehe that was Shane in his prime sometime in the 1980s...even at his best he had the teeth of a goblin .Id say it was as much heavy smoking and drinking as it was anything else. He became addicted to heroin when they threw him out of the band but I believe that was in the early 1990s.

There is a pretty fascinating documentary about his life that came out in 2020 called Crock of Gold - A few rounds with Shane MacGowan. Johnny Depp was the producer or executive producer I believe .

Shanes technically one of if not the most successful musicians of all time in terms of royalties. He earns around £350,000 a year from Fairytale of New York.

I'm surprized he's still alive.

You can find Crock of Gold here, its best watched with a few good whiskies :).

Good heavens!!!.... I jumped out of my chair, I put your video on high volume from my PC... I clapped and shouted when you put your hat on!.... And I enjoyed every second, every note, every millimetre of the lyrics of "The Gambler" interpreted by you my dear friend Jasper !!!!... THANK YOU FOR THIS, I'M SPEECHLESS!!!!... Thank you also for talking about me as a photographer, I am flattered and appreciate your words very much!.... Sending a big hug my dear friend.... I told you: "You are a natural country artist".... BRAVOOOO!!!!... Thanks for this!!!!...

PD: My wife and daughter came running to my little studio, worried when they heard the songs at full volume.... They didn't know if everything was OK (I always have headphones on, so they were very surprised)... To their astonishment I answered them:

You got to know when to hold 'em!!!

Ha ha haa.... :))

It's a great new song! Thank you for putting me onto it!
Now we need a new request!

As you know, @zakludick is hoping to form a little band of South Africans doing well on HIVE and the initial hurdle is getting over 50HP... It looks like you're on track to get over 15HP from this post which will help!
