(Traducción al español al final del post)

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa!

Welcome to Week 4 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival! A massive thank you to @edwardstobia for keeping the Hive Music Festival going! I loved checking out a lot of the posts from the first three weeks!

I am going to continue to use this opportunity to share my own original songs! (I love playing covers, but I have HIVE Open Mic, Three Tunes Tuesday, and my own initiative where I take cover requests on Thursdays to do that, so please follow me to see if you’d like to see me tackle songs by other artists?)

In the first three weeks, I showed my softer, finger-picking side mostly. In the next three weeks I hope to raise the tempo slightly and strum away a bit! I hope the messages behind the songs are still clear and emotionally compelling though!

This week I would like to show you my song “Factory Town”! I actually studied chemical / process engineering at university. My first job in 2008 was to pay back a year bursary to a company that placed me in a factory town in the only ugly part of South Africa – somewhere where the coal mining meets the gold mining underground – and the powerplants and factories dominate above the ground! I could no longer surf, and there was little beauty compared to gorgeous Cape Town!

Towards the end of my compulsory year, I realised that if I don’t leave this town, I am going to become more like the people who lived there, and put money and safety above beauty, freedom and adventure! So, I left that town, even though it meant abandoning a good salary, to move back to my beautiful Cape Town, where I could surf and play music and hike in the mountains! I wrote “Factory Town” in 2009 shortly afterwards!

And so, even though “Factory Town” is really about a real factory town… I also think of it as a metaphor for life… Life is too short to settle and play it safe. Rather chase beauty, adventure and your dreams… and be brave! I hope you enjoy it!

By the way, I am doing a weekly post on Thursdays where I ask for cover song requests in the comments, and then if I attempt your song in the following week's post, you become a beneficary to 50% of the post's rewards in HP. If that sounds interesting, please think of a song you would like me to try and look out for my post on Thursday?

Lyrics for “Factory Town” by @jasperdick (original)**

*All my life, I’ve been waiting
For the day, that I turn eighteen
‘Coz all my life, I’ve been held down
Growing up, in this factory town

*Oh no no, Mother and Father, let me go
There is a whole world, I need to know
Oh Mother and Father, don’t drag me down
Life is just too short, for Factory Town!

*All my friends, I’ve seen them come and go…
Freedom is… a word they’ll never know…
All the girls are factory secretaries
And all the boys are factory employees…

*Oh no please, Mother and Father, let me go
There is a whole world, I need to know
Oh Mother and Father, don’t drag me down
Life is just too short, for Factory Town!

*This town won’t drag me down, no I don’t need no factory town…
This town won’t drag me down, no I don’t need no factory town…
This town won’t drag me down, no I don’t need no factory town…
Shit town won’t drag me down, no I don’t need no factory town…

*Toda mi vida, he estado esperando

*Oh no no, Madre y Padre, dejadme ir
Hay todo un mundo que necesito conocer
Oh, madre y padre, no me arrastren hacia abajo

Oh Madre y Padre, no me arrastren hacia abajo

I like the story behind the lyrics and you have a great mindset and will to leave your previous town for a better opportunities. Though I cannot relate much to the lyrics but certainly, I felt your emotions while singing your own song.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it as it is what I want to try focus on - conveying the emotion of the song, and really feeling it.

My friend, that is why we say, and we know, that music is a universal language. It is not necessary to understand, but to feel. And in this case, you can feel that boy's desire to overcome, the rhythm, super catchy, your voice, as always, spectacular. We are really pleased that you continue to be part of this great wave of artists who are present on this great stage of the Hivve Music Festival...

I extend you the invitation to an event on the HMF server at 5pm Venezuela time. There we will be sharing music, a pleasant evening in the company of the artists who have been present at this great Festival. And also, with a lovely audience.

Thank you so much! It is a special guitar that I received as a 21st birthday present many (16!) years ago and I still don't quite think I'm worthy of it, but it helps me sound like I am!

I couldn't miss your presentation @jasperdick you are a great composer, and I like how you connect the reality of what you live, and what you see with the lyrics of your songs. I find that so cool. I also want to tell you that this song is too beautiful, and I have become a fan of it. I congratulate you dear friend and brother for such a beautiful presentation. Applause!

Brother you are a dreamer, a real human being. I love the way you think, you are conquering life and making good music.

You have to be brave to escape the system and hold on to your dreams, to life, to freedom, as you express it.

It was nice to listen to you, a song with a great message, although the era of slavery is somehow over, we are still slaves to many other things, tied and blind to customs and necessity.

You play your guitar very well, you have a great voice that you put to good use, and to add to that, you compose your own lyrics. I am in awe of your talent, I must definitely follow your work.

Thanks for sharing, excellent participation.

What a beauty to listen to your music and read part of you and your story dear @jasperdick
What moves you, fills you and inspires you.
You can't imagine how identified I felt with this paragraph.

...And so, although "Factory Town" is really about a real industrial town...I also consider it a metaphor for life.... Life is too short to settle and play it safe. Better pursue beauty, adventure and your dreams....

How nice to see that you chose well, that you gave priority to your happiness, to enjoying those little and big things in life that fill everything and encompass everything.
