Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Music Community! My name is @jasperdick and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa!

This is Week 3 of the “Retro Music” challenge! The aim of the game is to play a cover of anything from the 1920s to the 1990s, anything that would be considered a bit “Retro” in this day and age, which opens up a world of possibilities!

I had some music loving parents and grew up with a big music collection from the 1960’s to 1980’s. I then had a music loving big sister who got me into 1990’s music as I became a teenager myself… but for some reason, the “Retro Music” challenge makes me want to dig into songs that are just a little bit older than all this… at least for now!

How about some early blues? In particular a classic standard blues riff that I cannot imagine living without?

I want to play you “Hoochie Coochie Man”!

According to the Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoochie_Coochie_Man), “Hoochie Coochie Man” was written by Willie Dixon, and then first recorded by Muddy Waters in 1954. It features such a recognisable riff that it is hard to imagine blues existing without it! Bo Diddley landed up using the same riff in “I’m a Man” (which Muddy Waters would often play himself anyway!)

In those days, a “Hoochie Coochie” dancer was similar to a Can-can dancer – pushing the limits of how provocative you could be! A Hoochie Coochie Man would have been a man with some significant sex appeal! The song mentions a “black cat bone”, “John the Conqueror Root” and a “Mojo”… these were all lucky charms that a superstitious man would have carried to give him extra sex appeal and better luck with the ladies! This song is a great example of what we might now call “SWAG” – hahaha!

Here is the man himself, Muddy Waters, singing the song in concert:

Lyrics for “Hoochie Coochie Man” by Muddy Waters

The gypsy woman told my mother
Before I was born
"You got a boy child's comin'
Gon' be a son of a gun
He gonna make pretty womens
Jump and shout
Then the world wanna know
What this all about."

But you know I'm him
Everybody knows I'm him
Well, you know I'm the hoochie coochie man
Everybody knows I'm him

I got a black cat bone
I got a mojo too
I got the John the Conqueror root
I'm gonna mess with you

I'm gonna make you, girls
Lead me by my hand
Then the world will know
I'm a hoochie coochie man

But you know I'm him
Everybody knows I'm him
Well, I'm the hoochie coochie man
Everybody knows I'm him

Alright, darling.
Alright, darling.
Let's ...

On the seventh hour
On the seventh day
On the seventh month
The seven doctors say

"He was born for good luck."
And that you'll see
I got seven hundred dollars
Don't you mess with me

But you know I'm him
Everybody knows I'm him
Well, you know I'm the hoochie coochie man
The whole round world know we're here

¡Quiero jugar contigo "Hoochie Coochie Man"!

salta y grita

me voy a meter contigo

Las voy a hacer, chicas
Llévame de la mano
Entonces el mundo sabrá
Soy un hombre hoochie coochie

Pero sabes que soy él
Todo el mundo sabe que soy él.
Bueno, yo soy el hombre hoochie coochie
Todo el mundo sabe que soy él.

Esta bien querida.
Esta bien querida.
Vamos...

En la séptima hora
en el séptimo día
En el séptimo mes
Los siete doctores dicen

"Nació para la buena suerte".
Y que verás
tengo setecientos dolares
no te metas conmigo

Ah man I love this song so much, I've borrowed the music to make a fun song about a Frog singing "The Greens" instead of "The Blues"... I just can't imagine life without that classic "Duh na-na-na nuh!"
