Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 33 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, four weeks ago I started wearing the “Cover Hat of Shame”. (When I started playing music in public, one of the first places I went to was called the Barleycorn Music Club, which heavily encouraged that we try out our original songs on the audience. I even joined the organising committee to put on the little gigs for a while. So, my “cover hat of shame” joke originates from those days! Hahaha!)

But… I don’t want to just play any old cover for the Hive Music Festival! You guys are my friends and deserve something special… a special effort from me! So, I thought I would challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that for every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival over the next few weeks, that I must use a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the 11th instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Wacky Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!

So far, we have had:

1. The Kazoo
2. The Pennywhistle
3. The Autoharp
4. The xylophone / glockenspiel
5. The Valiha (bamboo zither)
6. The ukelele
7. The piano sample sounds from the “Bongo Cat” Website
8. Random stuff I found in my kitchen
9. My toddler daughter’s baby-piano toy and rainstick
10. An antique wooden recorder

Now it is time for the 11th “Instrument of the Week” – 25 Litre water drums from Cape Town’s water crisis!

A few years ago, after years of severe drought, Cape Town’s dam levels got really low and there were threats of a “Day Zero” where we would run out of water entirely before the next rains and snows in the mountains… many boreholes were drilled, and many Jojo tanks were installed to try and collect rainwater. My in-laws did both, and so they still have these large water drums to bring the water inside to flush toilets, etc. No new dams have been built, and so another drought and water crisis could easily happen again in another few years…

So why not play around with the water drums and how they sound slightly different from each other, and see if we can get a simple blues song out of it? The song I have chosen is “After Midnight” by J.J Cale (1966), and also famously covered by Eric Clapton in 1970. Eric Clapton covered a lot of J.J. Cale songs like “Cocaine”, and they eventually made an album together only a few years ago as much older men!

My version with only the water drums and an egg shaker in my sock sounds pretty “caveman” and is far from perfect – but that was always the risk of the “Wacky Musical Instrument of the Week” challenge! Hahaha!

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad de Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 33 / Ronda 3 del Hive Music Festival!

Después de hacer solo canciones originales durante las primeras 22 semanas, hace cuatro semanas comencé a usar el “Cover Hat of Shame”. *(Cuando comencé a tocar música en público, uno de los primeros lugares a los que fui fue el Barleycorn Music Club, que animaba mucho a probar nuestras canciones originales con la audiencia. Ahora es el momento del undécimo "Instrumento de la semana": ¡bidones de agua de 25 litros de la crisis de agua de Ciudad del Cabo!

Hace unos años, después de años de sequía severa, los niveles de las represas de Ciudad del Cabo bajaron mucho y hubo amenazas de un "Día Cero" en el que nos quedaríamos sin agua por completo antes de las próximas lluvias y nevadas en las montañas... se perforaron muchos pozos , y se instalaron muchos depósitos de Jojo para intentar recoger el agua de lluvia. Mis suegros hicieron ambas cosas, por lo que todavía tienen estos grandes tambores de agua para llevar el agua adentro para descargar los inodoros, etc. No se han construido nuevas represas, por lo que otra sequía y crisis de agua podría volver a ocurrir fácilmente en unos pocos años...

Entonces, ¿por qué no jugar con los tambores de agua y cómo suenan ligeramente diferentes entre sí, y ver si podemos sacar una canción de blues simple? La canción que he elegido es “After Midnight” de J.J Cale (1966), y también una famosa versión de Eric Clapton en 1970. Eric Clapton hizo muchas versiones de J.J. Canciones de Cale como "Cocaine", ¡y finalmente hicieron un álbum juntos hace solo unos años como hombres mucho mayores!

Mi versión con solo los tambores de agua y un batidor de huevos en mi calcetín suena bastante "cavernícola" y está lejos de ser perfecta, ¡pero ese siempre fue el riesgo del desafío "Instrumento musical loco de la semana"! jajaja
