(ESP-ENG) Darkside Blues - Movie Review!

It's been a while since I've been around here. A lot has happened, but little by little we're getting back into our routine of talking about anime like we always have. Today I'm bringing you something old school, a 1994 film based on a manga created by Hideyuki Kikuchi, the same artist behind Vampire Hunter D, which explains the similarities in many ways. Personally, I find these films from that era spectacular because of their style, animation, raw intensity, and distinctive character designs. I think that kind of elegance is impossible to find in things made today.

Tiempo sin estar por estos lados, muchas cosas han pasado pero poco a poco vamos volviendo a la rutina de hablar de anime como siempre lo hemos hecho. El día de hoy vengo con algo de la vieja escuela, una película de 1994 que viene de un manga creado por Hideyuki Kikuchi, el mismo de Vampire Hunter D, de ahí a que se parezca tanto en muchas cosas. Estos films de esa época en lo personal me parecen espectaculares por todo el estilo, la animación, lo crudo que son y ese diseño de personajes tan característico. Creo que esa elegancia que se veía antes es imposible verla en las cosas hechas en la actualidad.

We are in a dystopian future where almost the entire planet is under the control of a single family, a kind of corporation called "Persona Century." I say almost because there are several independent zones, one of them being Kabuki-cho, an area known as the dark side of Tokyo. In this place live the "Messiah," a rebel group of thieves and thugs, who ultimately become the last vestige of resistance against this group that controls the entire planet. In the constant battles against Persona Century, fights that are unequal because they use cutting-edge technology to decimate the population (their base of operations is in space), a mysterious man appears one day calling himself Darkside, who finally decides to side with the people and the Messiah.

Estamos en un futuro distópico en donde casi la totalidad del planeta está bajo el dominio de una familia, una especie de corporación llamada "Persona Century". Digo casi porque hay varias zonas que aún son independientes siendo una de ellas Kabuki-cho, una zona conocida como el lado oscuro de Tokio. En dicho lugar viven los "Messiah" un grupo rebelde de ladrones y matones, que al final terminan siendo la poca resistencia que queda contra esta gente que controla el planeta entero. En esas luchas que siempre hay contra Persona Century, peleas que son desiguales porque usan tecnología de punta para diezmar a la gente (su base de operaciones están en el espacio), un día aparece un misterioso hombre que se hace llamar Darkside y que finalmente decide ponerse del lado de la gente y de los Messiah.

The unique aspect of Darkseid is that he's a man who was banished to another dimension by the leader of this corporation, which explains why he appears with a certain aura and strange powers. Some of these powers are based on a complete mental renewal, a kind of opening of the mind to release all the negativity or traumas that might be causing harm. He's a very mystical and elevated character, in the sense that he's not on the same level as a mere mortal, so everything surrounding him is shrouded in mystery. The film is incredible because it's gothic horror but also has elements of cyberpunk dystopia that blend together perfectly. All these films from over 30 years ago have a style that makes you think they're not for children; they were much more adult and profound. Yes, this story is very confusing at times; there are moments when you really don't quite understand what it's all about.

La particularidad de Darkside es que es un hombre que estuvo desterrado en otra dimensión por el líder de esta corporación, de ahí a que cuando aparece lo hace con cierta aura y poderes extraños. Algunos de dichos poderes se basan en una renovación mental absoluta, es una especie de apertura de la mente para así liberar todo lo malo o traumas que puedan estar haciendo daño. Es un personaje muy místico y elevado, en el sentido de que no está en la misma posición que un simple mortal, por lo que todo lo que lo rodea es misterio. La película es increíble porque es terror gótico pero también tiene cosas de una distopía ciberpunk que la verdad se mezclan a la perfección. Todas estas películas de hace más de 30 años tienen un estilo que una piensa que no es algo para niños, eran muchos más adultas y profundas porque si, esta historia de momentos confunde mucho, hay veces cuando de verdad no entiendes muy bien de que va todo.

Another characteristic of these plots is their brutality; we always see violence, blood, and utter dehumanization. There's a struggle for power and absolute control, and the fact that these people use laser beams to destroy mountains and, with them, entire villages, tells us that this pattern is always present in these films. As I said, there are moments where it's hard to follow the plot, but it never gets boring. I think the entire visual aspect, with its typical shortcomings of the era, is stunning. That gothic touch, with purple candles and darkness, makes it very interesting to watch. Furthermore, Darkseid's personality is exactly that: a quiet guy who appears and disappears at will.

Otra de las características de estas tramas es lo cruda que son, siempre vemos violencia, sangre y una deshumanidad total. Hay una lucha por el poder y el control absoluto de todo, que esta gente use rayos laser para destruir montañas y con ellas a pueblos enteros nos habla de que ese patrón siempre es visto en estas películas. Como ya dije hay momentos en donde cuesta hilar las cosas pero no llega a aburrir, creo que todo el apartado visual, con sus deficiencias típicas de la época, es brutal. Ese toque gótico, de velas moradas y oscuridad hace que sea muy interesante de ver. Además, la personalidad de este Darkside es exactamente eso, un tipo callado que aparece y desaparece cuando quiere.

The characters are really interesting. Mia and her friends, part of the Messiah group, are the typical bullies who roam freely around the city but know that against Persona Century, they can do little more than attack occasionally. However, they look out for each other like crazy; total solidarity. The villains are these people who are unfazed by anything, speaking calmly but harboring evil within. They are very oppressive and unafraid to get their hands dirty. The ending is open to interpretation; that is, everyone will see it differently. I'm telling you, it's nothing like what you might imagine. I'd say it's something very philosophical and thought-provoking. In short, a very cool and different movie, with a great atmosphere and a classic feel. If you like anime from that era, this is definitely the movie for you. Here's the trailer.

Los personajes son bien interesantes. Mia y compañía, parte de los Messiah, son los típicos Bully que van a sus anchas por la ciudad pero que saben que contra Persona Century poco pueden hacer más allá de atacar de vez en cuando. Pero eso si, entre ellos se cuidan a más no poder, solidaridad total. Los villanos son estas personas que no se inmutan por nada, hablan calmado pero llevan la maldad por dentro, son muy opresivos y no temen ensuciarse las manos. El final es interpretativo, es decir, cada quien lo verá de una manera distinta, ya les digo que no es nada de lo que se puedan imaginar, diría que es algo muy filosófico y para pensar. En fin, una película muy cool y diferente, buena ambientación y muy clásica. Si les gusta el anime de aquella época, esta es su películas sin dudas. Por acá está el trailer.
