(ESP-ENG) En la música, el español suena mejor que el inglés? // In music, Spanish sounds better than English?
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
This is a question I asked myself this week when I heard a song that I knew was originally in English and by chance I heard it in Spanish. It must be clear that tastes are very particular among all of us and deciding between languages is very complicated for me just because the music for me is perfect no matter how it sounds. But it is also true that there are certain songs that seem to sound better in a certain language.
I have a thought and it is that for example the ballads may be heard a little better in Spanish than in English, the opposite case of rock that certainly English is its mother tongue. So today's topic goes that way, I bring you songs in Spanish but that are originally in English and the truth is that they sound a little weird; let's see then some of the long list that is out there.
- Bon Jovi - Como yo Nadie te ha Amado // (This Ain't A Love Song)
This is a rare song because it is nothing like the original, neither the title nor the lyrics themselves because in the end it is a totally different message. Listening to Bon Jovi, a band that is characterized by its Glam Metal singing in Spanish is certainly an experience. I think the radical change was due to Bon Jovi himself and his decision to change the message and turn it into a declaration of love instead of a farewell story, as it swept the charts here in Latin America. Whether in English or Spanish this is an iconic TEMAZO.
- Christina Aguilera - Ven Conmigo - (Solamente Tú) // - Come On Over (All I Want Is You)
I understand that Cristina Aguilera does not speak Spanish at all despite her Latin roots but with this song, or album for that matter, it seems that she has no problem whatsoever, especially with pronunciation which is a factor that affects certain artists a lot. This song was her first in Spanish and with which she became known in these lands, a song that to this day is still a hit. Here something strange happens and that is that this version is MUCH better known in Spanish than the original in English so clearly, and in my personal opinion, it sounds a million times better, hearing it in English is strange so in this case point for the Spanish.
- Scorpions - Vientos de Cambio // Wings of Chance.
This is a song that was incredibly successful and 95 percent of it was due to the powerful message it has. Which is? - Well, we are in front of a song that is a symbol of peace and hope because it talks about the end of the cold war and the fall of the Berlin Wall. When they saw the repercussion that the song was having, they decided to make it in Spanish so that the message would reach many more people in the world. But here comes in what I said before, for the style of rock I prefer the original version in English.
- Phill Collins - En mi corazón vivirás // You'll be in my heart.
We come to one of the great classics belonging to the soundtrack of the Tarzan movie. Phill Collins is a master who made this song an anthem for many but he did it in both languages and in both it sounds equally good. This song has a particularity and is that unlike Bon Jovi's song, this one is an almost exact copy of the title, lyrics and message of the original in English. It is one of my favorite songs in the Disney world and I can perfectly listen to it in both languages so I can't choose one in particular, both are a great song and it was such a success that it made it to the Billboard Latin music charts.
- Bryan Adams - Todo lo que hago, lo hago por ti // (Everything I Do) I Do It For You.
This is a GOOD example that not always these experiments work out well. The original English version is a classic in the history of contemporary music, you can't say otherwise, in the nineties we all heard this great song everywhere. But the truth is that the Spanish version does not reach what one expects, why? - I think it's because in English it sounds SO GOOD that there's no way we can listen to it any other way and Bryan Adams' Spanish wasn't the best either. The ballads at the end then sound better in Spanish? - I already said yes, but when it is sung to perfection.
Bonus Tracks!!!
- Robbie Willims - Angel.
A song that personally sounds very good in English but not so good in Spanish, it is a hit in both languages but if I have to tip the balance in this opportunity the Spanish version is a step below.
- *NSYNC - Yo te voy a amar // This I Promise You.
Here the opposite happens and the Spanish version, although it may seem hard to believe, sounds a little better to me and even though I have listened to it ad nauseam in both languages, I think it became so popular that it stayed in my subconscious the way I enjoy it the most.
- Toni Braxton - Regresa a Mi // Un-Break My Heart.
A song that has been covered by many artists and groups but perhaps many did not know it was by Toni Braxton. A very heartfelt and melancholic ballad that sounds very EPIC in Spanish and that is due to the feeling with which the singer interprets it; at the level of tastes here we are in a 50/50. A true hit of all times.
In conclusion, which language sounds better? - I think it is a matter of taste. There are factors that influence a lot, diction, pronunciation but above all the ability to transmit the same thing in both languages. It's not silly but there are artists who are obviously very comfortable with English and that's why the Spanish doesn't come out as it should but those who manage to cross that barrier and put exactly the same feeling, the Spanish version becomes much better than the original.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos escuchamos e la próxima!
Well my people, that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
A hug to all of you, we'll hear from you next time!

Saludos!
