(ESP-ENG) Favoritos en los cuartos de final! [Opinión]
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
I know that we are not in Champions League week and that these quarterfinals are still a little more than two weeks away, but I still wanted to talk a little about what these four matches we will have could be like. It is strange because usually at this point a clear favorite could be outlined, there have been several matches and a direct elimination to see and analyze, but I feel that there is no club that will take the stolen, as we would say colloquially, I think there is not. Yes, Benfica, Napoli, City after that drubbing or Madrid's dance against Liverpool may have been good candidates for the favorite's tag, but I have always said that the real Champions League begins at this stage and it is here where we will see if there is really material to lift the crown.
- Real Madrid - Chelsea
We are facing two teams that are not doing so well in their domestic competitions. I would dare to say that last Sunday Madrid lost any chance to aspire to La Liga against Barcelona in a classic rather loaded with certain controversies, being 12 points behind the leader. Is this a failure? - For me, yes, without a doubt. The Whites always have to be up there fighting and the fact that they are with such a wide difference with respect to the Culés, a team that is not even in the Europa League, should be a reason for alarm bells to ring. But in the Champions League the story is different, they are a club which this competition makes them great, they grow regardless of the league situation and that for me is vital, Madrid has an angel, as I have always commented, that somehow they achieve the impossible in the Champions League.
Chelsea is another club that is not doing well either, a team that made a millionaire investment in signings and that has not been seen much on the field. In the Premier League they are 31 points behind the leader, a real madness and in my opinion Graham Potter has not been able to find the team, in every game he comes out with a different 11, a clear sign that something is not quite right. Here in the Champions League they took away a Dortmund team that on paper were favorites after the first leg of the round of 16 but what no one counted on was that the second leg was one of the best games Chelsea has played this season. Both are in need, very much in need, I think Madrid more so as they are a club that is always used to winning and they could very well go without titles this season. My winner are the Merengues, in the Champions League they are very big and I think they will use their caste and history to move forward.
- Bayern - Manchester City
Perhaps the most evenly matched of these quarters and the most complicated to predict. I feel that this match will be defined by details, by the good night that Haaland, De Bruyne and company can have or by how well all of Bayern's monsters are playing, and I say monsters because if you see the team's roster, it is one that is scary, it gives you the utmost respect. The Germans are strangely not being protagonists in the Bundesliga and only because they are in second place, one point behind Dortmund; this is strange because, like Madrid, it is a club that is always seen at the top. Another detail with the Bavarians is that despite the great squad they have, they are not showing the best soccer or at least that which one knows they are capable of displaying, in fact they lost 1-2 to Leverkusen last Sunday. In the Champions League they dispatched PSG, but the French were never a match for them; playing at half-machine they won the key 3-0 on aggregate.
Guardiola's City for me is a mystery because there are games where they score 6 or 7 goals but then we see others where they struggle to win, an example of this against Crystal Palace where they won just 1-0 two weeks ago. That's why I said that everything will depend on how connected the android Haaland and his teammates are. In the Premier League they are in second place, 7 points behind Arsenal, who many of us thought would slow down, but that has not been the case, hence why Pep's team is having such a hard time catching them. In the Champions League they massacred Leipzig 8-1 on aggregate, where the mystery I told you about was present again, the first leg was very even but the second leg was a goal fest. Inconsistency is what I see in this team. I think that in the end City will win the pass only because they have Haaland, the differentiating factor of having him on the pitch is immense and he is a player who is capable of changing the course of a tie in seconds.
- AC Milán - Napoli
This is undoubtedly the easiest match, at least for me, to find a winner. The interesting thing is that these two play on Sunday but it is Napoli who has the advantage in direct confrontations since back in September last year they won 2-1. Napoli is having a dream season where in Serie A they are the undisputed leaders 19 points behind Lazio; if you asked us this at the beginning of the season I assure you that nobody would have signed it. A team with great players that make a lot of difference; Di Lorenzo, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the different player and of course Piotr Zieliński, the Pole who is a star in that midfield of the Neapolitans because they are also players who score goals, they are useful both in defense and in attack.
The same cannot be said of Milan, a club far below the level shown last season when they won the Scudetto. The tragedy of all this is that if they do not win the Champions League, which I see as very complicated, they could be out of it for next season as they are in fourth place but only 1 point behind Roma who are in fifth place. They qualified by eliminating Tottenham in a very modest way and with a partial one-goal lead. I don't see them competing at this level beyond the quarters, I don't see them hungry or eager to advance. I think Napoli is the overwhelming favorite to win this match, a real tragedy would have to happen for Spalletti's team to miss out. This is Napoli's year and the next club we are going to talk about...
- Benfica - Inter
And yes friends, this has to be Benfica's year. Since we started this Champions League and we saw in the first round the performance of the Portuguese team at least I knew that this club could go far and well here we are, in the quarterfinals. A team that is also the leader in the Portuguese league, 10 points behind second-placed Porto and undefeated so far this year. A barbarity if you ask me. In the Champions League they also massacred Club Brugge 7-1 on aggregate, displaying exquisite soccer thanks to players such as Goncalo Ramos, Joao Mario and Rafa Silva, a midfielder who is giving a lot to talk about. It seems that the curse of Béla Guttmann may be behind us, it is true that there are several moons to go, but if this club continues to play the way they are playing it is possible that we may be able to see history in this Champions League.
Inter is their rival, another team that is not at the same level. Many of us were surprised that three Italian teams have made it into the top eight in Europe but the truth is that only Napoli is in the best position and level. Third in the table, 21 points behind the leaders, is a very wide lead considering that there are still a few games to go until the end of the season. It's no coincidence but Inter also knocked out Porto in almost identical conditions to Milan, with just a one goal difference in some pretty sour matches if you ask me. I don't see Simone Inzaghi's team fighting against Benfica, the level is much higher but it is also true that the ball is round and anything can happen. I see Benfica qualifying without any problems and getting to the semis ready to continue making history.
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
