The first round of the round of 16 has culminated yesterday, that is, we already have the first names in the quarterfinals of this edition of the Champions League. Bayern, PSG, Manchester City and Real Madrid are the four clubs that signed their passes after having played their respective matches, matches that some were a little clear in what would be their destiny but others the truth was a total question mark given the reality and the present of the teams. If you ask me, I am happy with those who advanced because this will guarantee us that there will be duels of a high caliber.
PSG advanced to the quarterfinals after a few years in part thanks to one man, yes, we are talking about the guy who will leave at the end of the season to, possibly Real Madrid, and who many fans are already waiting for that day, as they let him know with a banner. Not that I am a PSG hater, but the quality of the fans of that club is pretty pitiful, that's why they will always be a small team compared to others in Europe. But that's not the point, the thing is that against Real Sociedad this Mbappé dazzled again, he reconfirmed that he may be the best player in the world today as he managed to score three of his team's four goals.
Real did not play a bad game, in fact at times they made life difficult for the French, but they were unable to be effective, something that PSG had plenty of thanks to the boots of Kylian. It is impressive how a single player can be able to carry a team on his shoulders so easily because in the end that is what ended up happening. The two goals were almost of the same bill, a filtered pass for Mbappé inside the box to do the magic, he doesn't need more than 2 meters of space to do whatever he pleases. But will this be enough in the quarterfinals? - We'll see, I would think not because it is not that Luis Enrique's team went over the top, they won with just enough and that's it.
On the other hand, Bayern managed what seemed impossible to me, to come back against Lazio, who were far superior in the first leg. The point here is that the Italians destroyed what they did with their hands with their feet, never better said. At the Allianz they did not exist, they did not shoot at goal even once in the whole match, it was a pitiful game from Sarri's team. On the other hand, we saw Harry Kane rediscover the goal, De Ligt in great form and above all Pavlovic. Tuchel's team breathed a sigh of relief because they managed to save the season a little, as they are not doing well in the Bundesliga, 10 points behind the leader.
I don't know if this Bayern will be able to continue advancing, if they play a game like Tuesday's it is possible but nothing is known with this team, they are being very inconsistent, for every good game they have three bad ones so everything ends up being almost a random. What was also a coincidence is what Real Madrid did yesterday that almost left them out of this Champions League. In theory, the meringues had an "easy" match against Leipzig, but in reality it was not at all easy. Yesterday's match was a great match, one of the best of the day because the Germans went and proposed a game that made the whites very uncomfortable to the point that for minutes they simply saw the ball passing, there was a strange passivity.
If Leipzig had had a truly "killer" forward that game would have easily ended 1-4 but that was not the case, Openda forgave a lot, too much I would say. Madrid never played well, they never dominated, they were always surprised by the Germans' impetus but in the end they won due to the lack of effectiveness of their rival and because Lunin was also stellar; the defense sometimes suffers unnecessarily. Vinicius is a guy who for me will never be a great or a legend because of the attitudes he had, he tends to leave the game, his mind plays dirty with him and he disconnects to the point that he had to be expelled due to that push he gives and that the referee forgave. But he scored the "tranquility" goal. I don't know to what extent this team will be calm in the quarterfinals.
Strangely, I don't see them as favorites because of their game, but rather because of their history and name. And finally Guardiola's Manchester was a steamroller against the Danes, both in the first leg and in the second leg the citizens never gave up and they won both games with the same result for a 6-2 aggregate. What is happening with this City is that they do not generate as much as would be expected but the effectiveness rate is gigantic, yesterday they finished just three times, the three goals in question and with almost 70% possession. This tells you that it is a team that has the ball and only attacks you when a door is opened slightly. Haaland was finally able to score, he hadn't done so since the group stage so it's always good to see him score goals.
Of the 4 clubs, very honestly I do not see any as a clear favorite, for the first time what I see is an interesting parity in this Champions League. But not because of the high level they are showing but because they are all having details in their game that make them falter a little so we will see, we will have to wait and see what the quarterfinals have in store for us.
