Ufotable is one of the best animation studios out there, mainly because of their meticulous attention to detail. Almost everything they do is truly impressive, and I assure you, what I'm bringing you today will be no exception. Kara no Kyoukai is a series of light novels that this studio decided to adapt into films. There are seven in total, all based on the same characters and featuring horror, suspense, and fantasy. Today, we'll specifically be talking about The Garden of Sins (Panoramic View), the first of these films. I have to say that the animation is indeed quite good, which is what I expected, given that Ufotable and Aniplex are behind it.

Ufotable es de los mejores estudios de animación que existe básicamente por lo prolijos que son a la hora de animar. Casi todo lo que hacen son cosas realmente impresionantes de ver y esto que les traigo hoy les aseguro no será la excepción. Kara no Kyoukai es una especie de novelas que este estudio decidió convertirlas en películas, son 7 en total y todas se basan en los mismos personajes con el terror, suspenso y fantasía como banderas. Hoy en especifico hablaremos del Jardín de los Pecados (Vista panorámica), la primera de ellas. Tengo que decir que en efecto la animación es bastante buena, cosa que esperaba siendo Ufotable y la gente de Aniplex los que están detrás de esto.

Shiki Ryougi is our protagonist. She's an extremely cold young woman with a unique ability: mystical eyes. She's a demon hunter, and her eyes allow her to see things that others can't. In this case, she can see different threads connecting death to whatever entity is behind all the strange or paranormal events happening. What's really going on is that suicides have suddenly begun in the city where they live. Teenage girls, driven by an unknown force, are going to an abandoned building in a secluded area of the city and throwing themselves to their deaths. Who is behind all this? That's what Shiki will discover.

Shiki Ryougi es nuestra protagonista. Ella es una joven sumamente fría que cuenta con una particularidad, unos ojos místicos. Ella es una cazadora de demonios y sus ojos le permiten ver cosas que cualquier no puede, en este caso ella puede ver diferentes líneas que conectan la muerte con cualquier que sea el ente que esté detrás de todos los eventos extraños o paranormales que estén sucediendo. Lo que realmente está pasando es que en la ciudad donde viven de repente comenzaron a haber suicidios, chicas adolescentes impulsadas por una fuerza desconocida iban a un edificio abandonado de una zona solitaria y apartada de la ciudad y se lanzaban al vacío. Quien está detrás de todo esto? - pues es lo Shiki descubrirá.

But she's not alone; she works for a detective agency headed by Touko Aozaki, who is also a sorceress. She's also with Mikiya Kokutou, an incredibly kind man whose ability is to deduce things, find information, and uncover the answers he needs. Basically, this first 50-minute episode is about Shiki trying to figure out the cause of the suicides. As I said, this story incorporates several genres; it doesn't stick to just one. There's psychological suspense because it touches on themes like suicide, loneliness, and how all of this can lead to a state of madness. There's also some gore because these young women fall from a building; the scenes depicting them are gruesome, grotesque, and, of course, bloody.

Pero ella no está sola, trabaja para una agencia de detectives en donde Touko Aozaki es la jefa quien también es una hechicera. Además está con Mikiya Kokutou, un tipo que es tremendamente buena persona y que cuya capacidad es la de deducir cosas, encontrar información y las respuestas necesarias. Basicamente este primer episodio de 50 minutos es eso, Shiki tratando de dar con la causa de los suicidios. Como dije esta historia tiene varios géneros dentro de ella, no se basa en uno solo. Hay un suspenso psicológico porque toca temas como el suicidio, la soledad y como todo esto puede conllevar a un estado de locura. Hay cierto gore porque estas jóvenes caen de un edificio, las escenas en donde las muestran son dantescas, grotescas y claro está llenas de sangre.

There's the fantasy element because Shiki fights using magic and supernatural powers. And finally, there's the romance because there's definitely something going on between Shiki and Mikiya. It's practically an all-in-one experience. As for the animation, it's one of its strongest points. In this first installment, there's only one major magical/supernatural battle scene, but it's more than enough to showcase the top-notch work. The attention to detail, the fluidity, the sharpness of every element in the scenes—the water, Shiki's movements, etc.—is incredible. Honestly, I don't know how obscure this is; it was my first time seeing it, but I thought it was top-notch and really cool to watch. I read somewhere that it's indeed a hidden gem from Ufotable.

Está la fantasía porque la forma de combatir que tiene Shiki es con la magia y con poderes sobrenaturales. Y finalmente el romance porque entre Shiki y Mikiya hay algo por ahí. Es prácticamente un todo en uno. En cuanto a la animación pues es uno de sus fuertes, en esta primera entrega hay una sola gran escena de un combate mágico/supernatural pero es más que suficiente para que nos demos cuenta el trabajo tan top que hay. La atención de los detalles, la fluidez, la nitidez de todos los elementos que hay en las escenas, el agua, los movimientos de Shiki, etc. Honestamente no se que tan desconocido sea esto, es primera vez que lo veía pero me pareció muy top y algo muy cool de ver. Por ahí leí que en efecto es una joya oculta de Ufotable.

I was truly surprised and, above all, intrigued by this first chapter of this novel series. I was surprised by the quality of both the story and the visuals, and intrigued because I'm eager to see what comes next. I'm not a huge fantasy fan, but when it's not just magic but also touches on psychological/human and supernatural themes, it definitely grabs my attention. I say this because the antagonist of this whole story does what she does for reasons that are more human than supernatural, but you'll see for yourselves. I recommend it because I also think it's a hidden gem that deserves to be seen by more people. I've included a short preview below.

Realmente quedé muy sorprendido y sobretodo lleno de intriga con este primer capitulo de esta serie de novelas. Sorprendido por la calidad tanto en la historia como en lo visual e intrigado porque hay muchas ganas de ver lo que viene. No soy muy fan de la fantasía pero cuando esta no es solo magia sino que toca temas psicológicos/humanos y sobrenaturales definitivamente llama más mi atención. Esto lo digo porque la antagonista de toda esta historia hace lo que hace por razones más humanas que sobrenaturales pero ya ustedes verán. Se los recomiendo porque también creo que es una joya escondida que debería de ser vista por más personas. Les dejo una pequeña previsualización por acá abajo.
